Vantage 5.1 Data Conversion --- FRUSTRATED!

Boy that's weird. I did have one time on my laptop where it just seemed to get 'stuck'. Disk space is one problem I've run into with Schema's because of the BI file getting so large.

In my case, I had no one on the server, no services except progress
running. CPU utilization never got above about 3%. I aborted the
upgrade after 8 days.

We are testing the conversion to Vantage 5.1 on a seperate server. Our
database is almost 5 Gig, and I am running the schema changes from the
server.

IT HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR 3 DAYS!!! The "Task List" dosen't indicate that
it has stopped responding, but the Vantage window is blank, and the
screen is not updated so I have absolutely no idea how much longer it
will take,... or even if it is stuck in a loop!

For the life of me I cannot understand the mentality of the Vantage
programmers! How hard would it be to update the screen every once in a
while with a conversion status, or estimated time remaining, or
something!!!
Don't they realize that their customers cannot just stop doing business
while they wait an UNKNOWN amount of time for the conversion to
complete!!!!!

For Example:
What if we began conversion on a Friday evening, and come Sunday night
it still wasn't finished, what do we do? Do we assume it is not even
close to being done and abort (which case we will NEVER convert)? Or,
do we take a chance and assume it is almost done, and let it finish?
(but how long do we wait?)

It took me 3 weekends to upgrade from 3.0 to 4.0 and migrate to a new

third time I knew how long it was going to take. It sounds like a stone age
approach but it worked for me.

Britt,

I understand your frustration. I've run through the 5.0 to 5.1 conversion at least 6 times, and have had to start over several times. I would advise that you leave the crash protection ON. That way if you are unsure and need to restart the schema changes it won't have to start over. Three days sounds VERY excessive in time, but with a five GB, who knows.

My tests have shown: The (dual 400Mhz w/512 MB ram) server was the fastest when nothing else was running - 3 hrs. Ran schemas from a client installed on the server itself.
But, the server 'choked' on the conversion during the day when others were using it, and after stopping and restarting it, the schema changes took over 9 hrs. This happened while running the schema changes from a client machine with the database on our server.
On my laptop, with nothing else running, the schema changes take 7 hrs consistently every time.

Hope this helps a bit.

Been there done that. A major pain, it took two days, a Sunday and a Monday.
I had a hard time telling people I didn't know when it would be done.

Important Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Conversion has now been going 4 days!! Still no signs of a screen
update!!!

I did talk to tech support and asked them why the programmers did not
include a screen update every once in a while, and they responded with a
" I don't know".

Are you running a performance monitor on your server or better yet from
another server watching CPU Utilization? This may be your only indicator
that it is still working an not hung up.

One thing I did notice during our test upgrade to 5.0 is that the server
(PII-300) actually did not have anywhere near as much processor usage as the
workstation (c700) running the schema change. So my recommendation to anyone
else doing this is to make sure you use your best workstation for the schema
change.

Task Manager shows the CPU utilization running at 1%, and in the
"processes" tab, I see activity on one of the _mprosrv processes.

Another update!!! It has been 4 1/2 days, and I have noticed a slight
change in the Vantage conversion window!!! It now has a slightly darker
blank screen probably due to screen phosphor burn out!

Britt,

What finally happened? I am doing a test upgrade from 4 to 5 on my
notebook. I started a week ago, I am now watching the phase 2 of idxbuild
command. It looks like its going to take about 24hrs for the idxbuild
command to run. I sure hope there isn't a phase 3. It only took an hour to
bomb on the last block of phase 1, Until yesterday I didn't think there was
a phase 2. I'm so glad this is a test. How long did your schema change
take? Do you remember how long it took going from 4 to 5. Anyone else who
went to 4 to 5 with about a 2 gig data file, how long did yours take? How
long did your idxbuild take? We are planning on doing ours this weekend. I
should say starting ours this weekend. Who is the patron saint of
conversions? I think I'm going to need more than tech support here.

Ed,

I'm doing a test conversion of 3 to 4 to 5 to 5.1 with a 1.3gb database.
I'm in the last stage of database conversions now on 4.0 and should
(hopefully) start 4 to 5 this afternoon. I'll let you know how long it
takes.

Rick
The conversion took about 35 min with a 420 MB DB from 4.0 to 5.0. Make
sure you turn off crash protection in Progress Explorer.

Ed,

Reading your last message, some bells just went off
regarding our conversion when we jumped from 3 to 5 in
one weekend. Progress has a 2 GB file size limit, whether
that is the database files, or the bi files. We had a
problem in our conversion to 5 where the index build started, but
bombed because the bi file got to be 2 GB. Of course during
our conversion, this problem popped up about 1 am. Be sure to
break up your database and bi files into multiple extents, so
you don't reach the limit. Tech support can help you do this.
Good luck.

Tim,

We broke our data file up last June. We now have a 2.1 GB data file. Yours
must of been close to that to run into that limit, so if you remember I
would really be interested in your times.

My test server is a Pent 3 1 Gig, with 1 Gig of RAM, and a single 18 gig
Ultra 160 SCSI drive running Windows 2000.
Database size is 4.8 GIG, with 10 extents of 512 meg, BI file is 512
meg.

First attempt to upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1, running the Schema Change from
the server, ran 8 days, so I aborted the upgrade.

Second attempt, I ran the Schema change from a workstation (Celeron 500,
128 meg mem), and it took 10 hrs to do the schema change, and about 30
min to do the "mandatory data conversion".

Britt,

Thanks for getting back to me. So it is best to run the schema change off a
decent workstation. Do you (or anyone else) know if that is also true for
5.0?

Thanks Ed

I've run the 5.0 schema change several times at the server, never a hitch.
Of course my db is nowhere near 4.8g. But still, it's not a problem in W2K.

Britt,

Thanks for getting back to me. So it is best to run the schema change off a
decent workstation. Do you (or anyone else) know if that is also true for
5.0?

Thanks Ed

I've done schema changes both ways several times - it seems like it is never the same. Sometimes the workstation is faster, sometimes the server is faster. The only thing that has been consistent has been doing it on a stand alone laptop - 7 hrs every time. My theory (no scientific verification), is that the server would do it fastest if there was NO other activity on it. But if users are accessing files, etc. on the server, then doing the schema's from a workstation may be the way to go. This is only gut feel, here now. I have no clue what goes on behind the scenes.

One note, I've never successfully done schema changes on a NT 4.0 workstation. It always hangs up. Go figure...

In my case, I had no one on the server, no services except progress
running. CPU utilization never got above about 3%. I aborted the
upgrade after 8 days.
