Vantage 5.1 is Slow [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

Not that this accounts for the speed decrease from 5.0 to 5.1, but opening
Vantage on a 10Mbps network is MUCH slower than a 100Mbps network. On
average, it takes about 8 seconds for Vantage to load at 100Mbps as opposed
to 20 to 25 seconds at 10Mbps.

We are currently running 5.1, which we upgraded to from 4.0. We have our
server tweaked and configured properly, but still noticed a slight decrease
in speed after the upgrade.

First experiment with half / full duplex settings.

Talk to Foster at Vantage Support. He helped us resolve our performance

2 weeks ago we moved to 5.1. At that time I moved Vantage to our new
server, which is much beefier then the one 5.0 was running on. However,
Vantage is much slower now then 5.0 was. Our server seems configured fine,
and I don't think it is the problem.

We are still running 10baseT on almost all of our network. Could this the
bottle neck?

Is anyone else running 5.1 on 10baseT or am I the only person on earth who
has not got approval for a network upgrade?

Any insight would be appreciated. (My users are about to storm my office

Scott,

Intel makes an open source tool to track down I/O performance issues on your
network:

http://www.intel.com/design/servers/devtools/iometer/index.htm

Run this during some typical operations to determine if you your network is
the performance bottleneck. If it is, now is an excellent time to consider
jumping all the way to a Gigabit backbone and 100 on the desktop.

Scott,
The biggest performance tip I have is to completely clean the previous version of Vantage off of each workstation. Start by running the unregocx on your old drive letter, then uninstalling Progress 9.1A, then unmap the old drive letter that you used for Vantage 5.0 . Then you need to go into the registry and delete any references to the following:

1. Old mapped drive letter (seach for x:\ where x is your previous mapped drive)
2. Old epic50 folder (search for epic50)
3. Old version of Progress (search for 9.1a).

When you find an instance, and there are many, just delete the value inside the registry key where possible. Otherwise, delete the folder (as in the case of 9.1a). I have done this on numerous workstations without harmful effect and with great performance improvements.

I believe what happens is that when Vantage is opened, it first looks on all available drives that are listed in the registry for the locations of the files.

----
If the above still doesn't help performance, there are some server enhancement tips that can help your server get more bang for the buck ie. the -B setting, the -Mn setting, setting the Buffer size for transport to the workstations, etc. Wayne Cox could step in here with some pointers, and Epicor can send you a doc on increasing performance of your server as well.
