Vantage 5.2 on NT4 server?

I would try IE6.0 with sp1, this resolved similar issues I had with 5.0
and Progress Explorer.

Wow! Don't you love problems like these?

Makes you always worry its not something simple and stupid.

Out of curiosity - as a troubleshooting method only, I would try
something.... install everything on an entirely different machine. NT4
server with sp6a exact same config.

If it does the same thing there it would rule out your hardware (of
course I doubt its your hardware, but I believe its worth testing - esp.
to test your network card in case its giving you "funky" feedback).

If that works ... then you should start looking into your hardware on
that computer - esp. your nic card.

Otherwise, what all do you install? - IE 6.0 ... try 5.5 if you can.
MDAC 5.7 (I think that's the latest version). those should be normal
items on the server that I would recommend being installed. Check your
network performance if you can, make sure you're not getting any bad
feedback from the network.

These are things I can think of off the top of my head to try next,
maybe you all ready have. I'll try to think of more in the meantime, or
maybe someone else on here will know the problem and the resolution.

Thanks, everyone. This eliminates *ONE* more variable.

I've got both Vantage 5.2 and the client on this server. From the
server, I log into Vantage, and try accessing some tables (job tracker,
part tracker, shop tracker, etc.). After a while, the database just
stops, and Vantage errors out. Progress Explorer shows the database as
stopped.

I've duplicated this with both our live database (converted from 5.1 to
5.2, of course) and with Epicor's test databases.

This is a clean install of the OS. Generic server with brand name
components. No virus scanning. No backup program running. No other
programs or services running. I've reformated the drives and
re-installed everything *4* times now, with the same results.

Progress, Epicor and I have all been through the logs. Still can't find
the problem.

We've had no trouble (sound of wood being knocked) with the server DB

We do and have had no problems yet whatsoever, works great! (knock on wood)

Have you checked event logs to see if anything in there could be causing any
problems?

Have you checked progress event logs?

Is anything else besides just Vantage running on this server?

Any other services stopping once booted?

Reinstall the software?

Any Backups or virus programs trying to access the database while in use?

Hmmmm.... that's about all I can think of at the top of my head just for
things to check.

If all else fails, I know this may not be the wanted answer especially with
servers, but I am just saying this so you could always consider the options,
reinstall the entire server (LAST STOP ONLY!)

We have a Dell PowerEdge with NT 4.0 SP6a and have had absolutely no
problems with it whatsoever.

Not that Epicor Support has not probably already been thru these (and had
you send a vntgtech file too) but just in case....
1. When you setup the client on the server you did skip the Progress Client
install right? (Don't install P-Client on server).
2. You should reference the Epic52 folder in the Vantage client by means of
a drive mapping (even while on server) - so I've been told anyway
3. Have you reviewed Vantage.ini and Progress.ini - for some reason they get
lots od references to mapped drive letter in front of Epic52 which is odd
because the drive mapping should include that (you might see
V:\epic52\vantage when it should be V:\vantage).
4. In Progress Explorer is the DB path using physical drive letter on server
(should be)
Like I say, they have probably run you thru these hoops already but these
are some things that goofed me up on our test server.
Good luck,
-Todd C.

I had problems installing P9.1A on our live server and ended up having to
install the latest MDAC. The version I downloaded from Microsoft was 2.5.
But it did solve the issue so I believe at least that level is required.

Again, thanks to everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.

I've got IE5.5 on the machine (right now, without the current IE service
patch, but I *think* I tried it with the current SP during one of the many
installs).

I've got whatever version of MDAC that came with Vantage/Progress/NT4.
Haven't tried changing that yet.

For what it's worth, this is the same server on which we ran Vantage 4 for
over a year an a half. The NIC is an Intel 100/PRO, and Intel's latest
drivers. At Epicor's request, I did swap out the NIC with another identical
one. No change.

Based on the error logs and messages, the tech at Progress seems to think
that it's somewhere in the network layer (even though the database is local
to the client). At Progress's suggestion, I even set up Progress and
Vantage to point to the local/physical drive letter, rather than to the
mapped drive. Still crashed.

I'd *love* to try this on another box. Unfortunately, the only other box I
have available is a P-II 233 MHz, 32 Meg RAM box. I actually *did* the
install on it -- took *7 HOURS* to do the second schema change! Don't know
how long the first schema change took, I ran it overnight. I didn't crash
it - but it was too slow to truly test.

That all said, let me add just one more thing. Right now, Progress 9.1D
(and the database) runs. If I don't access Vantage, the databases will run
fine (at least overnight. That's the longest I've let it run). If I *do*
launch Vantage, I can access things fine .. for a while. It may take a few
*hits* before the databases shut down. I've sometimes had to log into and
out of Vantage a number of times, each time accessing something, before
things hang. But, if I can crash the system with only one user, what would
happen when the entire company logs in?

Thank goodness for 'testing'. <g>

Again, thanks to everyone.

Malcom,
On your test machine, you could install just 5.2, then just copy your database backup copy over from the NT 4.0 server rather than do all the schema changes on the test machine. It would save you a load of time. Then you can run the database and see if you can get it to crash.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] Vantage 5.2 on NT4 server?

Thanks, everyone. This eliminates *ONE* more variable.

I've got both Vantage 5.2 and the client on this server. From the server, I
log into Vantage, and try accessing some tables (job tracker, part tracker,
shop tracker, etc.). After a while, the database just stops, and Vantage
errors out. Progress Explorer shows the database as stopped.

I've duplicated this with both our live database (converted from 5.1 to 5.2,
of course) and with Epicor's test databases.

This is a clean install of the OS. Generic server with brand name
components. No virus scanning. No backup program running. No other
programs or services running. I've reformated the drives and re-installed
everything *4* times now, with the same results.

Progress, Epicor and I have all been through the logs. Still can't find the
problem.

Malcom,

I am having a very similar problem with my 5.2 installation.

I am new to vantage and have been doing the updates on a test server. I
am going from v4 - v5 then v5.1 then v5.2. All this is running on a new
server running Win2k.

I was able to upgrade from 4 to 5 and 5.1 with no problems at all. Then
when I try to go to 5.2 my database stops every time during the Schema
Change phase 2.

Epicor and myself are also at a lose as to what is happening but maybe
it is a similar problem as you.

Malcom,
On your test machine, you could install just 5.2, then just copy your
database backup copy over from the NT 4.0 server rather than do all the
schema changes on the test machine. It would save you a load of time.
Then you can run the database and see if you can get it to crash.

Again, thanks to everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.

I've got IE5.5 on the machine (right now, without the current IE
service
patch, but I *think* I tried it with the current SP during one of the
many
installs).

I've got whatever version of MDAC that came with Vantage/Progress/NT4.
Haven't tried changing that yet.

For what it's worth, this is the same server on which we ran Vantage 4
for
over a year an a half. The NIC is an Intel 100/PRO, and Intel's
latest
drivers. At Epicor's request, I did swap out the NIC with another
identical
one. No change.

Based on the error logs and messages, the tech at Progress seems to
think
that it's somewhere in the network layer (even though the database is
local
to the client). At Progress's suggestion, I even set up Progress and
Vantage to point to the local/physical drive letter, rather than to
the
mapped drive. Still crashed.

I'd *love* to try this on another box. Unfortunately, the only other
box I
have available is a P-II 233 MHz, 32 Meg RAM box. I actually *did*
the
install on it -- took *7 HOURS* to do the second schema change! Don't
know
how long the first schema change took, I ran it overnight. I didn't
crash
it - but it was too slow to truly test.

That all said, let me add just one more thing. Right now, Progress
9.1D
(and the database) runs. If I don't access Vantage, the databases
will run
fine (at least overnight. That's the longest I've let it run). If I
*do*
launch Vantage, I can access things fine .. for a while. It may take
a few
*hits* before the databases shut down. I've sometimes had to log into
and
out of Vantage a number of times, each time accessing something,
before
things hang. But, if I can crash the system with only one user, what
would
happen when the entire company logs in?

Thank goodness for 'testing'. <g>

Again, thanks to everyone.
