Vantage 6.1 on Vista Business OS

Yes, you most certainly need to de-activate UAC.

Paul,
Have you checked the UAC? I think this needs to be deactivated before
you can do the install for vantage..

Here is a link to Microsoft's support site for UAC.

Paul, I have Vantage 6.1 set up on Vista Business (not Premium) and it
works fine. This may sound like a stupid question, but do you have the
Mfgsys61 directory shared?

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage 6.1 on Vista Business OS

Hello Group,

I'm trying to install Vantage 6.1 client on a Windows Vista Business
Premium OS and having problems.

When the Vantage installation wizard ask for the location of my Vantage
software it does not show the mapped drives. If I enter the path it
gives an error that the drive could not be found.

Has anyone ran into this? Any information will be helpful.

Vantage support just says they do not support version 6.1 on Vista.

BTW, all the money we pay for support and I'm talking to someone in
Mexico for Vantage support......Arrrrrggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!

Hello All,

From deep in the recesses of the labs, we have discovered what may very well
turn out to be a nifty performance increase for Vantage 6.x and 8.x users.
I say "may" because, while it has shown improvements in our test systems, we
have yet to obtain confirmation from anyone in a production environment.
So, we'll offer this up to anyone who would like to provide evidence one way
or the other.

Essentially, it involves replacing the standard Sun JVM provided by Progress
with the JVM developed by BEA Systems. Its called JRockit and, according to
BEA's claims, it improves the memory utilization, application performance
and system stability over the Sun JVM by 15% to 20%. In our testing, we
have noticed improved application response and report performance but, as I
mentioned, it's not a production environment. If anyone is interested in
trying the BEA JVM on their production system, the following link contains
all of the information for reconfiguring Progress/Vantage to use the BEA
JRE.

http://www.aspacia.com/documents/VantageJVMUpgrade.pdf

Good luck and let us know what you find out at your facility.

Best regards,

Michael

Here is my test:

Vantage 8.00.806b

Salesperson Workbench (Auto Refresh):
Before: 2:52 After: 2:47 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:04)

I want to note that although this fix is great, and thank you very much
for it, Vantage 8.0 is a sloth compared to 6.10. Amazing how they can
make everyone so excited and push an UPGRADE that is 10 to 42 times
slower than the old version.

Granted there are some improvements over 6.1, but to decrease my
productivity time for them is something I really have to weigh.

Anyone else on the same page as me? Or am I way off base?

Thanks again for the fix!

We are in the process of upgrading to V8 from DataFlo, and have heard a
lot about the slowness issues during conference sessions, and through the
Vantage Yahoo Group. We have purchased a new Dell server, and are
upgrading all PC's to at least 1GB of memory. We have a total of 70

I am having a conceptual gap in my knowledge of the design objectives in V8.0. Especially with regard to any of the "browser" type screens (for trackers or maintenance of existing data). At the last Perspectives it seemed that in mos tof the demos and labs rather than jumping into a "browser" type screen and grabbing everything they immediately "filtered" down the selection to bring in a much smaller set. In 6.1 these browser type screen tend to make everything within a small defauklt subset (like open or closed) available but isn't there a difference in "where things happen" between 6.1 and 8.0? This is the conceptual part I'm weak on. It seems to me the design intention was to use these screens differently in 8.0 and that part of the performance hit may be in trying to use 8.0 the same way as 6.1. So is it really a performance difference or a technique difference?

Also, on the before/after comparisons would a second "after" for the same data criteria be any faster so that you pay any performance penalty only the "first time in"?

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Ben, you are not alone! We will not upgrade until the performance hit is
reasonable. 10 times slower, even 2 times is not reasonable in my book. I
really hope Epicor is listening, because I am a real fan of the product, I
have made some real strides in making the 6.1 product dance when I ask it, I
have been loyal to Epicor through over 6 years and 3 companies...

BUT I WILL NOT UPGRADE TO A PRODUCT THAT WILL DECREASE PRODUCTIVITY EVEN IF
THE BELLS AND WHISTLES ARE REALLY COOL!

Until I hear more reports from the install base of 8.0 that the performance
is similar to 6.1, I am not even in a hurry to get the upgrade pack shipped.
If I am going to throw thousands of dollars (more likely tens of thousands
in our case) at the next version for hardware I expect and require a
performance increase, not the other way around.
Stepping off my soap box now,

To my understanding, the "before" condition represents entering the screen
for the first time with the original JRE and the "after" represents entering
the screen with the updated JRE. Yes, entering a screen for a second time
does improve the performance because a) it has been previously JIT compiled
in the .NET platform and b) the data will have been cached on the server.

Also, on the before/after comparisons would a second "after" for the same
data criteria be any faster so that you pay any performance penalty only the
"first time in"?

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Vantage I got these results.

Here is my test:

Vantage 8.00.806b
3ghz 2.5gb ram

Login:
Before: 0:22 After: 0:09 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:12)

Order Entry:

Job Entry:

Part Tracker:

Salesperson Workbench (Auto Refresh):
Before: 2:52 After: 2:47 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:04)

I want to note that although this fix is great, and thank you very much for
it, Vantage 8.0 is a sloth compared to 6.10. Amazing how they can make
everyone so excited and push an UPGRADE that is 10 to 42 times slower than
the old version.

Granted there are some improvements over 6.1, but to decrease my
productivity time for them is something I really have to weigh.

Anyone else on the same page as me? Or am I way off base?

Thanks again for the fix!

Todd,

There really is a performance difference. The root causes for the
performance difference stems from two design changes in 8. The first is the
decision to move to a server controlled model that executes the business
logic at the application server rather than the client. The net result is
to dramatically increase the number of parallel execution threads required
to be running on the server. The second cause of performance issues is
rendering the client in .NET. While, in theory, code written in .NET should
not take a severe performance hit, in practice, unless the code is very
meticulously constructed, it does. The combined result is that significant
hardware upgrades are required on both the workstation and the server to
obtain the same level of performance as prior versions.

Any word on if change to 10/100/1000 networking improves any speed for
communication back & forth to server, in relation to Vantage 8? Just
curious, if that would add any additional improvement that would be
noticeable to the users?

Also - We'll be checking to see if the proposed performance increase is
compatible with Linux server or if a Linux compatible one is available.

I remembered when Vantage 8.0 was code named Sonoma and the priorities
on this release were - thin client (faster), easy to use, I believe easy
to integrate and manage. The result?

1. More demand on hardware at server and client ends than 6.1.
2. A lot slower to get to needed information.
3. Need to re-train all personnel on use - not the same as previous
versions.
4. Management and Integration - Have not done much with it. I had
problems from the beginning last May when I install 8.0 in my brand new
2003 Server and had so many issues, I keep postponing working with
it....

Hopefully, Epicor is doing something to the product so users on 6.1 will
consider moving forward - my 2 cents.

Here's what I found for Vantage 8.806e
I tested two systems: 1.6GHZ-1.5GB RAM
Before: login - 30 sec after 15 sec
Before: order entry - 45 sec after 23 sec
Before: Job entry - 60 sec after 25 sec
Before: Part Tracker - 1 min 30 sec after 20 sec

3.2GHZ - 1 GB RAM
Before: Login - 10 sec after 8 sec
Before: Order Entry - 15 sec after 12 sec
Before: Job Entry - 25 sec after 12 sec
Before: Part Tracker - 45 sec after 10 sec

I checked that virus scanning was not causing any slowdowns. It really
makes a difference, Especially on the trackers. Thanks Michael!!

I wasn't sure if I installed it correctly or not, but when I reopened
Vantage I got these results.

Here is my test:

Vantage 8.00.806b
3ghz 2.5gb ram

Login:
Before: 0:22 After: 0:09 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:12)

Order Entry:
Before: 0:22 After: 0:10 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:01)

Job Entry:
Before: 0:25 After: 0:11 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:02)

Job Tracker:
Before: 0:14 After: 0:10 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:01)

Part Tracker:
Before: 0:13 After: 0:09 (Vantage 6.10.532: 0:01)

Ben

Very true Todd, The technique difference is a huge part of it actually. I
had used Vantage in all of its stages for about 11 years before we switched
to 8.0 about a year ago. 8.0 requires a large re-wiring of the brain. My
head HURT for about a week and there was much swearing under my breath as I
would try to do something in 8.0 like I did in 6.1--it was very frustrating
to unlearn and relearn what was completely automatic for me.

We still have 6.1 at one of our facilities and I have to use it
occasionally. For me, going back to 6.1 seems like going back to the
STONE-AGE compared to 8.0 :-) Things I can find in one click to a different
tab in 8.0, in 6.1 I have to double-click, then double-click, double-click
to dive and dive and dive...uggg. In 8.0--once you pull up a record,
everything is in one interface with just a single click on a tab to find
the info---a lot more efficient. And there are a lot more right-click
options, which is really nice.

There are still speed issues in 8.0--I'm not disagreeing with that--They
have a ways to go to fix that. I'm just saying that in a lot of cases data
retrieval is a lot more efficient in 8.0, but you can't go about it like in
6.1.

As a new Vantage 8.0 user - went from dataflo - I can testify to the
perfomance concerns. The response times can be terrible. Hopefully
Epicor is listening and will take the needed steps to make this
platform perform. Productivity is critical in todays world and
Vantage 8.0 needs work. Speaking from my soapbox!!!

Vantage 8 performance is principally dependent upon two factors: optimizing
the DB within the JVM on the server and optimizing .NET rendering on the
client. On the server, all hardware being equal, the fastest JVM runs on
Solaris 10 owing to its kernel's efficient thread scheduling and tight
integration of the Hot Spot JRE. Unfortunately, Solaris is not on Epicor's
supported platform list although it is supported by Progress OE10B. In
theory, V8 should run like a madman affordably for shops with lots of users
on Sun's brand spanking new T2000 server owing to its 8 core 32 thread T1
processor but, alas, we can not presently know.

In the alternative, optimizing the server performance for V8 entails loading
it with sufficient RAM to cache your entire Vantage DB, stripping extraneous
CPU cycles by removing unneeded services and reducing the latency of your
network subsystem. The entire goal being to optimize the performance of
Java and nothing else. JVM's are highly thread enabled so a multi-thread
capable server is a given and, for windows server, a TOE NIC will help
reduce latency a bit but won't make the huge difference the vendor(s) claim
in application performance because Vantage doesn't load the IP bandwidth
with huge file transfers. Also, assuming that you have that
multi-processor, multi-threaded server, you can flatten the response time
for multi user access by playing with Progress' APW and BIW counts...but
that's for another thread altogether.

On the client, the trick is optimizing .NET rendering and particularly for
the initial screens. Once the screens are compiled and in memory, they are
lightening fast. Getting them there is another story. Plan for a fast
processor, lots of memory and a reasonable disk sub system if you want to
experience reasonable performance. There are, of course, other client side
options for improving Vantage performance that range from the benign to the
exotic.

Good luck,

Michael

Our experience has also been that performance can change very quickly
with changes to "Vantage code". We have seen significant changes -
both improvement and things getting worse - when patches arrive that
change code. I have been led to understand that in the .Net
environment the way the code is written can have a big effect on
system response time to the user.

Hello Group,

I'm trying to install Vantage 6.1 client on a Windows Vista Business Premium OS and having problems.

When the Vantage installation wizard ask for the location of my Vantage software it does not show the mapped drives. If I enter the path it gives an error that the drive could not be found.

Has anyone ran into this? Any information will be helpful.

Vantage support just says they do not support version 6.1 on Vista.

BTW, all the money we pay for support and I'm talking to someone in Mexico for Vantage support......Arrrrrggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!
