Vantage 6.1 on windows 98

Thanks to all who helped out on Friday. We are up and running on 6.1 this
morning. Just the usual growing pains to work though now.

I see that several members are able to run 6.10 on their 98 machines. Did
you have to do anything special to them? We were planning on upgrading from
5.2 to 6.10.526 this weekend. So far all the 98 machines crash when starting
Vantage. Of course, the XP machines work fine. I haven't called support, I
am dreading the "OS not supported" message.
Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance

I didn't do anything different to our win98s when we went from 5.2 to 6.1.
As I said before, performance is not the best but we have 10 of them
running.
Sorry, I don't have any clues for you.

Have you tried, on one that crashes, re-installing the client? Or, uninstalling Progress and reinstalling everything for the client. You should not have to do this but it might help and couldn't hurt. Also, is 6.10 on a different server than 5.2 is/was? There may be issues in the HOSTS and SERVICES files on the Win98 machines if they refer to a server no longer on the network.

Matt,

I just converted from 5.1 to 6.1 last weekend. All our shop PCs still have Win98 and have been able to connect with no problems.

The only suggestion I can make is to make sure you first uninstall the Progress 9.1C client (unless you're already at 9.1D? I forget which one 5.2 was on) then re-run the Vantage...errr...make that MfgSys install program.

Are you already at 9.1D? If so, which service pack level?

Also, how much Ram on the Win98 machines?

Mike

Since we are installing from a new server, I uninstalled progress and
deleted some old mappings from the registry. We then reinstall from the new
server. The hosts files are clear of any additional entries, the services
show the correct info for 6.1. I removed the old entries from the services
and still have the error "Prowin32 is causing a stack fault in module
kernel32.dll".

The clients range from a p3 500 with 128mb ram to a P4 1.GHz with 384 mb
ram. It does seem to be memory related. After 2 attempted starts, the
client freezes from lack of memory.

So far I do not have a 98 computer that works. I was hoping to get lucky
and find one that would cooperate.

hmm Is it possible to upgrade (50) 98 machines to XP in one weekend and get
the 6.1 upgrade complete, With a 2-person crew.

Thanks for the suggestions, Keep them coming!

The progress version on the new server is service pack 9 with the hotfix.

I reinstalled the hotfix for progress and I now have a few machines starting

In Nt,2000, and later computers the environment is set in gui under system
properties/advanced/environmental variables. I think in V6 it does this
automatically in fact. However in older computers like windows 98 you have
to edit I think the autoexec.bat file.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage 6.1 on windows 98

I see that several members are able to run 6.10 on their 98 machines. Did
you have to do anything special to them? We were planning on upgrading from
5.2 to 6.10.526 this weekend. So far all the 98 machines crash when starting
Vantage. Of course, the XP machines work fine. I haven't called support, I
am dreading the "OS not supported" message. Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance
