Vantage 6.1 to Epicor 9

There are feature summaries available on Epicor’s web site that list all new features, probably more details than you’re looking for. But it might be a place to start. I think there’s a separate feature summary for each major release.

We did the upgrade from 6.1 directly to 9. In addition to the points below, there are major changes in resource groups (replaces work centers) and unit of measure. And if you’ve customized 6.1, be prepared to rewrite all your customizations. (The new customization tools are much better… but nothing from 6 will convert).

Warren I have not seen anything, there is obviously a lot just in terms of the user interface but if you are looking more from a functionality point of view here are some highlights:

Financials
Extended segments (up to 20) including dynamic posting rules (customize your own posting rules)
Multi-Book capability
GL Control Codes which allow more flexibility in assigning GL accounts to customers, part classes, product groups, etc
Many new enhancements to deposits and advance billing, reports, reverse cash receipts, et al

Demand Management and EDI

CRM and Quoting
Call tracking
Salesperson Workbench
Opportunity/Quote Tracking
Workflow and Task Management
Integration with Outlook

Tools
Major differences in developing BAQs and dashboards
Customizations (many changes here)
Service Connect
Importing/exporting to excel from list views and dashboards
Updateable dashboards
Many more trackers and dashboards

Order Management
Drop Ship Processing
Buy To Order
Ship To to On The Fly
National Accounts

Production
New Cost Methods Including FIFO, Lot Avg, etc
Time and expense entry replacing labor entry for additional reporting for things other than shop floor time and quantity such as expense reporting
Serialization for incoming and shipment of parts including lower level parts
Field Service Jobs
Field Service Calls
Field Service Contracts
Project Tracking and Project Costing
Part Specifications
Advanced Quality Management
MES Shop Floor reporting
Handheld applications

Could go on and on with the detail but these are just a few of the things that come to mind

Management would like to see matrix of changes between Vantage 6.1 and Epicor 9. Has anyone come across anything that may help with this project? I am looking for what has changed for better or worse. Currently running Vantage 6.1 with multicompany between US and China with a new factory coming on line in Central America later this year. Using Citrix to support China users back to data center in Maryland.

Thanks,

We want to move to Epicor 9 from V6.1. We are thinking about starting
fresh with a new system. We currently run progress but would like to
migrate to SQL Server. We have successfully converted V6.1 to V8.xxx.xxx
The conversion from work centers to resources is pretty ugly. Our
current system has data going all the way back to when Epicor was on
AS400. Our current database is about 10GB in size and up to 14GB with
the BI file.

I would just like to open up a discussion on what people feel are
advantages & disadvantages of upgrading verse starting fresh.

Toby,
I guess I would question why you would want to bring the whole 10GB database over. Are you going to de-commission the old server or turn it into a test server?
Â
We migrated from Macola a couple of years ago and at the time decided we would only bring in the data for current customers and their parts. Open PO's only, etc. We kept the old server running with the legacy data and now, two years later, there is only one or two inquires/day on the old server. The Vantage database is 1.5GB after two years.
Â
Just my opinion.

This is pretty much our plan too. Aside from cleaning house it gives us a chance to rework all our codings into the new resource scheme as well as re-work the chart of accounts. Old transaction data will stay on the old server for year to year comparisons - probably Access reports via ODBC links to both DBs. Thinking of carrying forward selected customer, vendor, part info for active master info using Service Connect to populate the new DB and map with new codings. Vantage just plain keeps way too much old bagage with no other way to purge it out. This will be a great opportunity to streamline.

As for Progress vs. SQL.....one bit of advice I usually hear is to go with what you are most familiar with. Otherwise there are advantages and disadvantages for both.
