Vantage 6.10.541 - Document Management - Association

Aaron,

What you said makes perfect sense regarding 6.1 being somewhat stable
and that's why there are not as many posts from those of us still
staying where it's safe and cost efficient. I'm also pleased to see
so many of the names I've recognized since joining the group in
September, 1999 are still right here with us, on 6.1, making the same
decisions we made for similar reasons.

I would love to hear how any of the 6.1 users are handling ISO
requirements and the Document Association in Vantage. We have always
stored our documents in a folder on one of our servers and linked
them in Vantage. Now, trying to move forward and use the SharePoint
Document Management System we find we might not get the result we'd
hoped for in that Vantage and Sharepoint are not compatible.

If anyone has found a way to use these two together successfully, I'd
love to hear from you, or, if you have another DMS that works with
the Vantage Document Association, I'd love to hear that as
well...either on or off the list.

Sincerely,

We were thinking of using Windows SharePoint as our Document Management
System, however, we now find that drawings, etc., that are linked to
parts in Vantage's Document Association would not function properly as
http links.

Can anyone share if there is a way to use SharePoint and still have our
documents linked in Vantage, or, do you use another Document Management
system that works with Vantage's Document Association?

regarding ISO Document Mangement requirements and Vantage linked
documents.

We are still on 6.1 and plan to stay there for awhile. I just replaced a 7
year old server with an eye toward going to 8.x but we are adopting a wait
and see attitude. I have yet to see enough benefit to the upgrade to
justify the expense.

Mitchell...we are right there with you on that. The more we look into upgrading from 6.1 (and doing it "right") the more daunting it appears so we keep pushing it back. So we bought a new server for 6.1. The benefits that would justify the upgrade effort all hinge on leveraging new capabilities such as customization, BAQs, tracker screens, etc... and rushing in to these without examining the processes they are supposed to help would create a disaster. 6.1 works pretty darned well for us and at the moment there is not a good appreciation within our management group of the amount of time and effort it will take to implement said new features that will garner the benefits.

For document management we are in the same boat as Brian with AutoVue but are investigating how we might connect SharePoint to Vantage 6.1 perhaps passing file name info via a .p routine to a web browser accessing SharePoint managed info.

Judy,
Don't worry, there are a bunch still on 6.1. The reason for all the
questions about 8.X is that it has many new features, some documented well,
others not. 6.1 is rather stable and that lends to fewer questions. Those
that have made the jump to 8.x or are in process, have many questions.
Also, all new installs (and therefore many new type questions) are 8.x. I
am trying to get to 8.03.40x from 6.1 but we are having our challenges.
Don't feel lonely on 6.1 just yet. :)

How true! I began testing 8.0 soon after its release in May of 05. Went
through every patch, every release right up to today at 8.03.403D, and still
cannot make the move. The major roadblocks are the Method Masters structure
where the Work Centers and Operations are replaced with Resource
Groups/Resources and Operations. That requires a considerable amount of
effort to get them to work properly as they do not convert well from 6.1.

And of course, there's the performance loss. Epicor justifies the loss by
all the added new features, but like many others in a fast paced environment
going from click, click, click, done; to click - wait, click - wait, click -
wait, wait done; just is not acceptable. So we remain on 6.1.

The complexity (and long term costs of maintaining the model) of v8's StdOP/Capabilities/resource group/resource/calendar/department/default_employee/(3)default_warehouse-bins/shift/GL/code is light years away from providing a scheduling, management, or costing process benefit.

...Clearly not developed by anyone with any real word manufacturing expertice and experience.

(In my opinion, they will junk the schema at some point in order to finally provide a cost effective benefit to their customers.)

Stick with v6 until you verify for yourself that v8 delivers any functional value beyond v6.

How true.... I am also on 6.1 and won't make the leap. The benefits of
8 don't outweigh the performance loss.
