Vantage 8.0 Server Upgrade

Also make sure there is no min/max because that will drive demand.

We made an upgrade to our server about a month ago to support a
Vantage 8.0 deployment. Had a significant impact on performance.
Several people wanted more details - here is a summary.

Original Vantage Server

IBM eServer xSeries 335
2 - 3.06 GHz Intel Xeon Processors with Hyperthreading Enabled
4 GB RAM Memory
2 - 70 GB SCSI Hard Drives in RAID 1 Configuration
Microsoft Windows Server 2000

Everything was incredibly slow on this server and it had to be
rebooted at least a couple of times a day. We are now using this as
test server. We had hoped that reinstalling this server we allow it
to function as a backup server also but it has become obvious that we
can not function while running Vantage on this hardware.

New Vantage Server

Dell Power Edge 6800
4 – 2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon Processors Hyperthreading Enabled
8 GB RAM Memory
8 – 146 GB SCSI Hard Drives in 2, 0 +1 RAID Arrays
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition

This server has increased the performance of several aspects of
Vantage. MRP functions process much faster and the garner usage is
better. The server has enough hardware resources to handle periods
of heavy usage that forced us to reboot the original server.
According to Epicor, if you are using Progress, turning off
hyperthreading will show are marked increase in performance.

1) Our database itself is fairly large - we have over 55,000 active
parts and 600 active jobs.
2) Performance was so poor on the orignal server and storage cheap
enough we did not want to take any chances that storage would limit
performance.

Really? That's good to know I'll have to try it.

Has anyone else seen this?

Brian
I am soon going to make a study of V8 benefits and the anticipated costs, including hardware. Would you mind posting roughly what it cost for your new server? I am anticipating growing to 50 users and 2-3GB of DB so it might be considerable overkill but having an upper limit would be very handy. I have been ball parking $20K for server, storage and some management software.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Progress benchmarks the OE10 database on a system configured with
hyperthreading turned on so it's not likely that they would recommend
turning it off. There appears to be some possible performance gains to be
made by utilizing OE10's data clustering, however.

Really? That's good to know I'll have to try it.

Has anyone else seen this?

Wow, that is a huge jump in server size! We are planning about the same
size as your original (except 6 GB RAM). Right now I am running Vantage
8.0 on a virtual server on that server (so I can easily blow it away
when I am done), and performance isn't terrific, but not terrible
either.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage 8.0 Server Upgrade

4 - 2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon Processors Hyperthreading Enabled
8 GB RAM Memory
8 - 146 GB SCSI Hard Drives in 2, 0 +1 RAID Arrays
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition

This server has increased the performance of several aspects of
Vantage. MRP functions process much faster and the garner usage is
better. The server has enough hardware resources to handle periods
of heavy usage that forced us to reboot the original server.

Based upon actual use and discussions with Epicor personnel the
original server configuration is probably not going to adequately
support most Vantage 8.0 users. Yes - we overkilled a bit onthe
upgrade; however, the starting configuration was not really usable.

Wow! 4 dual cores is pretty much the equivalent of 8 processors, right? Are
they actually seeing a significant load?

Hmm... Four dual core processors with hyperthreading.... That would mean 16
processor history windows in task manager.

IIRC, virtual server only uses one processor. So you probably wouldn't get
very good performance.

Brian
Yes, I am aware of that. That is why I am happy with what I am getting.
I should also mention, to be fair and relevant, that our site is
basically as follows; 23 concurrent users, 3500 active parts, 350
active jobs, and is just under 2 GB in size.

Are you using the MS Virtual Server? The VMWare product supports multiple
CPU configurations.

1 core / 12.5 users actually makes sense to our size. Like I mentioned
before we are 23 users, and a dual processor server (single core) looks
like it will satisfy our needs.

Now, if I can talk the managers out of trying to grow the company:-)

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I remember you saying that this
system is
supporting 100 active users? If so, the implication is that in order to
obtain acceptable performance you would need 1 core for every 12.5
users?
Also, have you done anything to optimize the OE10B database like
increased
the APW's or setup data clusters?

I am using MS Virtual Server, and have no qualms about VMWare. It was
just MS VS was available and free for us. Also the latest release of MS
VS SP1, is multiprocessor enabled. I have not tested it yet, but sounds
good...

Are you using the MS Virtual Server? The VMWare product supports
multiple
CPU configurations.

Yes, I am aware of that. That is why I am happy with what I am getting.
I should also mention, to be fair and relevant, that our site is
basically
as follows; 23 concurrent users, 3500 active parts, 350 active jobs,
and is
just under 2 GB in size.

IIRC, virtual server only uses one processor. So you probably wouldn't
get
very good performance.

CPU load as a percentage seems to run in the 20-28% most of the day -
oddly enough when this number gets in the mid 30's we can see a
noticable slow down in response. Get above 50% and we are in serious
trouble - usually have to reboot. It is a lot of horsepower, but
without it we were having to reboot 5-10 times per day. In fairness -
we also run a lot of reports during the day that require
calculations - some of these clearly load the system up. Basically
scheduling simulations.

How did the faster machine reduce reboots?

We also have to reboot frequently (not yet in production) but it's
usually because of a runaway _proapsv.exe process. Is this what you
see as well? I wouldn't think that a faster box would reduce runaway
processes. My impression is that we're dealing with buggy software
rather than hardware. We're on SQL Server.

Has anyone else dealt with runaway _proapsv.exe processes? Any tips
on how to find the associated client process? If we can find the
offending client, maybe we can kill the appropriate _proapsv.exe and
avoid a reboot.
