Vantage 8.03.400 Crystal Reports Question

I was about to say that since Character fields can be 1000 characters
long, that's probably why you aren't allowed to sort or group by
them. It's like the Memo field in Access has its limitations.
However I went into a report of mine and grouped by Character01 with
no problem. We are at 8.03.403B, so it should be working for you.

a character field such as "Character01," "Character02," etc. I'm able
to see these fields in the report. However, I am unable to do any
kind of sorting, grouping, or record selecting on these character
fields. We are currently in version 8.03.305 based in progress and
are not having any of these issues. Is this a known bug and is there
any way to work around this? Any suggestions would be much
appreciated.

Hi Dustin,

I believe the "CharacterXX" fields are configured as memo fields (at
least in earlier versions of Vantage - we're on 6.1). They used to
be something like 500 character width fields. I think I remember
reading that in future versions of Crystal, the memo field would get
much larger. That may be why you cannot group/index/sort by these
fields. I have run into this problem in the past. There may be a
way to truncate them but I'm not really a Crystal guru. I've
exported data into MS Access and have worked around the memo
limitations but you have to truncate the fields.

Hope this helps.
