I installed the update, rebooted, launched Vista (yeah I know this is a
Vantage group, but the apps are really one in the same, with more
available features in Vantage), ran our 3 basic Ffinancial Reports,
minimzed Vista, launched IE, and went to lunch.

Upon returning from lunch, I found that MfgSys.EXE was unresponsive on
the client. :(

I hope Epicor isn't just clutching at straws....

Greetings List,

The purpose of my message is to try to find others like us. Since upgrading to 8.03.403 our clients often experience freezes or lockups. I am not sure what everyone would label them as so let me briefly describe an example. User A opens Vantage and begins to do some work there. They then minimize Vantage and do some work in another application. User A then attempts to bring Vantage back to the foreground but it never really delivers. The user sees a partially drawn screen, mainly a large gray box, which never fully loads. They then need to kill the process and start Vantage up again to resume their work there.

This happens more to my financial users as they are the ones bouncing around the most. Vantage can be minimized or in the background for as little as a minute and they still experience this problem.

I have been in contact with Epicor support for about 6 months now working to resolve this issue. All along I was told it was only happening to us. As of last week I found out this was not the case and was put in touch with another company having the same problem. We have tried the usual recommendations of a clean XP install, reinstalling .NET, and removing A/V. We have supplied Black Box recordings which apparently are not helping much.

We are currently running 8.03.404 on Progress. My client PC's are more than sufficient when it comes to hardware.

What I would like to know is if others are experiencing this in hopes of us communicating to find out what may be in common or work to resolving this as it has become a big PITA.

If anyone else out there is having this issue please, speak up. It would be great to hear from you as I am looking to bring some attention to this issue.

Thank You.

We have had "reported" problems with screens completely closing. I
have not seen it yet though. Also on my PC I have had near the
problem you have mentioned below, except nothing comes up. I have to
bounce back and forth a little on my task bar to get it to display.
Never bothered calling it in since I am sure I will get some bogus
answer. Sad I have to feel like that.

One user that sees it a lot is a heavy network user, meaning lots of email windows open to exchange, browser, etc....and also we have discovered the problem is made worse when she has a custom microsoft access program open.

When she prints vantage reports, this happens to her open vantage windows. She is not on a 1gb connection, which was suggested to me to possibly help, but you are definitely not alone.

I know lots of the tech's you will get on the phone are running in isolated environments, so they will be almost no help....which is also not to say that they would be even if they saw the problem.

We get this as well. Our main financial user and biggest user get it
the most.

I see this all the time (and still on 404). Leave a vantage app idle for a while and, after reactivating it, the whole desktop locks up for minutes until it finally wakes up (and behaves normally).

I suspect the server (or communicate layer) drops the associated support processes after they are idle too long. The during the wake-up/lock-up, I never see any process hogging the CPU.

We've been using .305 and .404 on SQL 2005 and we get exactly the
same problem. Like others have mentioned this only appears to occur
to what you'd class as 'heavy' users, you're definately not alone in
having this happen !.

It's my understanding the Vantage relinquishes the license after a
period of inactivity. I suspect that these freeze ups have to do with
the application waiting for the license to be reissued.

This should be easy to test. Set the inactivity timer for one of your
heavy users to a high value, like 600 minutes, and see if the problem
goes away for that user.

I see what you are saying but I don't *think* that is our cause. I have a 50 user license and only about 20 people in the system. That time out value should only take effect if there are not enough licenses available. Just the same I changed it to 600 for one of the users as it can't hurt to try. Thanks.

Have you checked server performance when this is happening. Specifically
run perfmon and see what your disk I/O is doing.

We've been using .305 and .404 on SQL 2005 and we get exactly the
same problem. Like others have mentioned this only appears to occur
to what you'd class as 'heavy' users, you're definately not alone in
having this happen !.

I have been watching this thread and looking for answers. I seldom have
users lock up but there are two things I have discovered since being live
for over a year:

One GB of memory is not enough for Vantage. You need at least 2 GB and if
it is a heavy user 3 GB is better.

Users that tend to cache a lot of programs have more lock up problems than
anyone else. I have had some users cache as many as 14 programs including
trackers, dashboards and entry programs. Once I got them to reduce the
number of programs being cached it help considerably.

The most resource intensive programs tend to be AP Invoice entry and
Supplier tracker when the Supplier has a lot of invoices. A dual core
processor with 3 GB of memory cut the processing times almost in half in
Version 8.03.305x. We lost some of what was gained in 8.33.403x. I plan on
submitting this to Epicor ASAP.

We are the other company that Greg initially contacted. We are on 8.03.403D
and are having the lockups exactly as he described. We are currently only
using the Financial modules and we have a "heavy user" that's in GL or AP
most of the time and has the lockups every day. Our AR user only has the
lockups occasionally.

I haven't had time to properly investigate this, but I must give Epicor
credit. They saw a posting I made about the problem on the EUG mailing list
3 weeks ago and called me to open a ticket to get it resolved. They changed
a few server settings, turned on verbose logging and had us install an
additional logging utility (BlackBox). Unfortunately, we haven't found the
cause yet.

We have 2GB of RAM. We have our timeout set to 0, so it should be
completely deactivated. These were the first two things that Epicor
checked. We also disabled Symantec AntiVirus, but still have the lockups.

We made the big jump from Vista 4.41 al the way to 8.03.404D back in
January. I have been fighting a similar problem. Hopefully 2 more
cents will help potentially narrow down the cause.

Symptoms:
* MfgSys.exe freezes on client machine.
* Most often when user is using other Windows apps, and switches
back to Vista/Vantage, after being away for about 10 to 20 minutes.
* Once in this state, it never recovers.
* Endning the MfgSys.exe task (via the windows task manager) is the
only thing that works.
* All other programs on client continue running without any
problems.
* Disabled 'session timeout' for all users. I actually had to set
it to 999 minutes, as Epicor support told me that setting it to 0
didn't guarantee it would be disabled.
* Disabled NIC power savings settings.

Here's something unique...

* It happens only on clients that have run the 'GL Financial
Reports' during the current session.

I hope all of that helps.

My accounting person showed me something strange today.
When creating credits for a multi-line RMA, each line is creating a separate credit transaction number.
She has to select the line under the lines tab (or in the tree) and then go to the credit tab and press ADD.
That is the first strange issue which seems new.

But even if we do all of these additional steps, why is it no longer putting the multiple lines under the same credit transaction number?

Is there some new setting somewhere that has been added to control this, or some flag somewhere that might have gotten changed at the upgrade?
Thanks
Carey

It's amazing how many people are having this issue. It is also a
shame that I hear so many stories of companies being told "they are
the only ones" when they aren't. We've been having this issue
continuously... infact, I started a message on the EUG board and got
many hits of people having the issue, but Epicor didn't contact me.
I haven't logged a call, because I'm tired of having to "prove it" to
them all of the time. I make more headway working with actual users,
and between all of us, we can usually figure out the solution. I
hope this is the case for this issue.

After following this thread for the past few days, I'm anxiously
awaiting the resolution since I would rather not go-live with
v8.anything until at least a work-around is found. With that in mind -
I offer the following for someone to try:

The "Server" service in Windows uses a setting called "AutoDisconnect"
to drop an existing connection (to a network drive or share) after so-
many-minutes of idle time. I wonder if this setting is having an
effect on the Vantage connections, too?

Could someone who's experiencing the problem investigate making changes
to this setting? It requires some registry changes, so it may not be
for the faint-of-heart, but most of us on the list are probably not
that faint after dealing with these kinds of issues.

Here's a KB article (MS KB 297684) describing the setting change:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297684

Please share any results with the list. Good luck!

Ari,

This appears to be for a mapped drive connection. We aren't mapping drives in this case as we are using UNC paths for version 8.

I have accumulated a list of 10 companies that responded so far. If I don't hear back from Epicor in the next few days our next step would probably be to compare client machines and try to find something in common.
