Vantage 8

Electroimpact has decided to let others hammer V8 for a while and concentrate their resources elsewhere. Our deep job structures and heavy customization requirements presented issues not affecting most of you. Although it hasn't been tested yet, Patch 808 fixes almost half of our critical and high priority incidents.

By the way, if anyone's interested in a full-time employee with Vantage 3.0-8.0 Implementation and OpenEdge experience, please reply off list.

When I click on Vantage Training, I receive the following message:
An error occured while installing updates. File or assembly name

I can see the directory where this files lives, but do not know where
the setting is to tell Vantage.

I got similar error messages during the applications upto patch 801d.

I clicked ok to the error and ran the conversion 100, 160, and 140
manually after that from the Admin Tools. Make sure before hand that you
don't need to run the schema chnages. Try double clicking the schema
changes it should say they don't need to be run again.

Calvin

Dear All,

We are about to be given a demo version of Vantage 8 for evaluation. Can anyone
suggest relevant questions that we should be asking / things we need to
bear in mind, or alternatively areas that they have had problems with the
functionality of version 8 / ways in which things do not work as anticipated.

Thanks,
Sarah
It really depends on your business.

These are my issues with the Vantage product line

1. Phantoms and Kanbans do not work together.
2. Standard Costing Functionality is very basic, you cannot do any
variance analysis because a child when it is issue is issued as all
material cost not broken up by component of cost.
3. CRM is a disaster, Quotas do not work
4. Mass changes to the database, make sure you understand how little
tools there are. For example mass operation replace only changes the
name of the operation not any other data associated with that operation.

** In general Vantage is a basic ERP system, that has a lot of smoke and
mirrors. **

Ask them:

Do workflow features work everywhere or just if you buy CRM?
Can you specify an account number on a requisition?
If you do buy CRM, can you attach a document in an email to a customer?
If not, can you at least attach a document to the call log?
What is the minimum workstation configuration?
What is the minimum server configuration?
Does it support selling kits? (A quasi-BOM used in ordering products)
Will education have online courses for all V8 functionality?
How far will you have to travel for education since they do not add classes?

That's for starters. If you really want to change things at Epicor, you have
to influence the sales cycle. Speak up folks...

Mark is absolutely right. We as a community must speak up. Recall when we
were buying, this is our opportunity via proxy to again impact the sales
cycle. The support side can only do so much.

And so, about the CRM:
Ask about relationship between the customer, contact, and ship to.
Specifically, the requirement of a contact and ship being attached to the
customer.

David

PS. If the functionality isn't there today... don't hold your breath. They
work on it but it's a complicated piece (of software), enhancements can take
awhile, years in fact.
If you plan to use scheduling, spend a lot of time reviewing it with them
and don't take their answer for anything without actually see it done. A
major issue for us is the way the system schedules its subcontracting, it
never alleviates time from it until it is complete. So, if you have
subcontracting and ever need to reschedule your jobs while anything is out
at subcontracting, it is basically useless!

Maybe if someone had some free time on their hands, they could compile

We could all sign it and send it to the up and ups at Epicor. Just a

Has anyone else posted their enhancement requests in the database at the
Yahoo Listserve main page?

If we get more posting there & companies calling in & attaching their name
to the call, the importance of the enhancement goes up.

I'd like to see some way of polling, voting, display of enhancements, that
the user groups would participate in as well.

If the group can all agree on posting their enhancements in the database, I
could set up a web-survey to poll the importance of the ones listed, and
send results, with respondent info, such as company site id, etc. to the
higher ups.

Again, it needs to start with us at least sharing the enhancement
information via the database at the Yahoo Vantage Group Page.

Thanks.

This would be great as well as convenient for us YahooGroup members but would it be effective?

Not to revive an issue that was beat to death once before but wasn't the Epicor User Group (EUG) supposed to be the "official" channel for submitting and voting on enhancement requests (for EUG members anyway). I thought I had heard something about Epicor's desire to deal with only one request list and EUG was it. A subtle bit of arm twisting to join EUG - otherwise you have no voice.

Could a member of EUG please let the rest of us non-members know if they have an enhancement request process and/or if any actual "voting" has been done relative to the next release level of Vantage?

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Todd,

You beat me to the response regarding the EUG. While we may be long time users and contributors unless we choose to be assimilated by the EUG "Borg" <old DCD pun intended> , the official Epicor sanctioned users group, I don't think our voice carries much weight any more. Being heard will cost you $360 per year.

It might irritate me if I wasn't so da*$# busy trying to make EDI work...

The suggestion regarding contact, ship to, etc. is a big one. If you
sell through distribution, and ship to third party contacts, the
system doesn't support it. You have to have an additional "ship to"
contact under each billing contact (distributor), and basically are
duplicating all the data. Where it gets very tricky is if you
sometimes bill the distributor, and sometimes the customer, and then
how it all can get tied together in the end back to the end user,
not the distributor. I hear their 8.5 release for next year
addresses distribution better.

Most important thing is: you will never get better support, software
enhancements, etc. than before you purchase/go live/and finally pay
all the bills. Once your account is current, you seem to become a
very low priority on the list. Just my experience...

Also, document, document, document all promises made by the sales
team!

Just to add some flavor to the EUG aspect of this discussion, since, I am
most likely at the root of some/most/all of the adversarial relationship
between this group and the EUG. Not quite a year ago two EUG members started
posting "Come Hither" messages on this group. Since the Vantage group has
very firm rules about "advertising type" postings, we don't let consultants
advertise, 3rd party services, software sources and whatever. The EUG
postings fell into this category, in the opinion of Todd Anderson and me.
We protested VERY strongly directly to EUG and I had a conversation with
their President. He assured me at that time that no such EUG postings would
occur again and that if EUG wanted to communicate to this group they would
do so through the moderators. During this activity I made a clear statement
in the group that if any other postings of this type happened again the
poster would be "gone".
Back in January/February of this year another "Come Hither" message was
posted. I subsequently removed the membership of the poster. Naturally,
there were some very harsh off list emails passed back and forth as a result
with copies going to various Epicor management staff. That was initiated on
the EUG side of the conversation not ours. (It kind of reminded me of "
Nya Nya Nya, I'M TELLING MOM!" but whatever). The point of this is; don't
expect much Pro Bono from the EUG towards this group.
The moderators took a strong stand on this because this was how the members
wanted this group to function, not because Todd and Shirley were PAPA and
MAMA DOC. (comic reference to an old 3rd world dictator). I will point out
of the 1374 active members in this group there are probably over 100 members
with @... as their email domain. Epicor employees are always
welcome, and until I see a mass un-subscription of @... I have to
believe that somebody there is paying attention.

Just thought I'd throw in a little history for your enjoyment.

Todd,

You beat me to the response regarding the EUG. While we may be long time
users and contributors unless we choose to be assimilated by the EUG "Borg"
<old DCD pun intended> , the official Epicor sanctioned users group, I
don't think our voice carries much weight any more. Being heard will cost
you $360 per year.

It might irritate me if I wasn't so da*$# busy trying to make EDI work...

This would be great as well as convenient for us YahooGroup members but
would it be effective?

Not to revive an issue that was beat to death once before but wasn't the
Epicor User Group (EUG) supposed to be the "official" channel for submitting
and voting on enhancement requests (for EUG members anyway). I thought I
had heard something about Epicor's desire to deal with only one request list
and EUG was it. A subtle bit of arm twisting to join EUG - otherwise you
have no voice.

Could a member of EUG please let the rest of us non-members know if they
have an enhancement request process and/or if any actual "voting" has been
done relative to the next release level of Vantage?

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Having now spent something like 8 years working with Vantage and EPICOR I'd
like to toss out this thought.

There is one and ONLY one "Official" channel for enhancement requests
regarding Vantage and that is EPICOR itself.

Not this list, nor any other list. It would be a pointless waste of time
for any third party organization to create and maintain an enhancement
request database for Vantage.

EPICOR . HAS . an enhancement/bug database for Vantage. Every time you call
in and request something it is supposed to be entered into that database.

The real issue here is the mechanism itself, not who controls it. EPICOR
will ALWAYS control what enhancements are added to Vantage since it is,
after all, THEIR product.

About 8 years ago the Midwest Users Group tried to influence the enhancement
mechanism within EPICOR. At the time we asked EPICOR what determined which
enhancements actually made it into new releases. At the time we were told
that the "Number of hits" on an enhancement determined what was considered.
In other words, how many user companies requested that specific enhancement?
Ok, easy enough, as a user's group we printed off about 100 enhancements
that we knew about and printed them one per page listing the EPICOR
enhancement number, the description, and a spot where user companies could
fill in their company name, site ID, and a block where they could add notes.
Then, just for fun, we faxed the entire stack to every company in the
Midwest user's group. ( back before email ) Each user company then went
through the stack and pulled the ones they agreed with, filled them out, and
then faxed them into EPICOR to be added to the database. A week or so later
I got a call from EPICOR wanting to know who's bright idea it was to fax
them several feet of faxes? Furthermore, what exactly did we expect them to
do with them since they didn't have anyone who even had the time to deal
with a few feet of faxes . Oh well, it seemed like a good idea.

The answer here is not for us, or anyone else, to create an enhancement
database for Vantage.

What do you folks really want out of this process and why isn't EPICOR's
enhancement process getting the job done?

Past complaints have been:

* Is it a bug or an enhancement? Funny but true. Just because the
product doesn't work the way you think it should doesn't make it a bug. On
the other hand 2 + 2 = 5 situations ARE bugs.
* How can we, as users, see the current list of enhancements and bugs
in a readable format so we can see what's been recorded and what the status
is?
* If we call in to request an enhancement that a specific screen
should be blue instead of white and the enhancement is written up that we
would like it to be in Japanese . how can we spot these and get the correct
enhancement written up?
* How many companies have voted for a request? Can we easily add to
the list?
* Could we take a day on the list to discuss one module like CRM with
the developers to work up a list of suggestions?
* Etc etc.

Seriously, if we're going to discuss this . what is wrong with the current
program at EPICOR and how would you folks like to see it changed?

On some level I suspect this comes down to a desire to help make the product
better so it better meets our needs running up against the feeling that
EPICOR is not listening and/or that you're voices are not being heard.

So what should EPICOR do differently to make sure that you feel like you do
have a voice in the process?

would it be effective?

Not to revive an issue that was beat to death once before but wasn't the
Epicor User Group (EUG) supposed to be the "official" channel for submitting
and voting on enhancement requests (for EUG members anyway). I thought I
had heard something about Epicor's desire to deal with only one request list

Could a member of EUG please let the rest of us non-members know if they

Has the Vantage user group suggested the use of a web based poll. This
process is used by the DataFlo user group with Epicor hosting the events.
The initial round of webcast polling summarizes the wish list, and then
users join in at prescribed times to listen to a live webcast and enter
their vote for enhancements. Each company is allowed to vote for say up
to 10 enhancements, so that the prioritization is not skewed. This
process produced good results and helped the users and Epicor prioritize
enhancement requests. Just an idea!

7 years of dealing with Epicor.

It is my feeling that in the past the companies that Epicor listens to for
requests are usually the bigger $$$ companies. Let's be realistic, money
talks! The problem with that is that larger companies do business entirely
different than us little guys. Modules become cumbersome and lose focus.
We chose to discontinue maintenance since none of our requests for
enhancements ever made the cut. Why spend the money annually on updates
that aren't to your benefit??? What we have now is a product our employees
are familiar with and we have learned to deal with it's downfalls. Every
update just seemed to cause more problems than benefits. I'm sure if more
people started to pull out of maintenance maybe something would change but
until Epicor realizes that they have other companies that need to be heard
they will NOT act on enhancements. They need to make the program more
robust and applicable to everyone. At least fix the bugs. So basically I
am seconding Todd's comments..it's pointless to track enhancement requests
here...

Thanks,
-Todd C.

7 years of dealing with Epicor.

It is my feeling that in the past the companies that Epicor listens to
for requests are usually the bigger $$$ companies. Let's be realistic,
money talks! The problem with that is that larger companies do business
entirely different than us little guys. Modules become cumbersome and
lose focus. We chose to discontinue maintenance since none of our
requests for enhancements ever made the cut. Why spend the money
annually on updates that aren't to your benefit??? What we have now is
a product our employees are familiar with and we have learned to deal
with it's downfalls. Every update just seemed to cause more problems
than benefits. I'm sure if more people started to pull out of
maintenance maybe something would change but until Epicor realizes that
they have other companies that need to be heard they will NOT act on
enhancements. They need to make the program more robust and applicable
to everyone. At least fix the bugs. So basically I am seconding Todd's
comments..it's pointless to track enhancement requests here...

Subject: [Vantage] EUG / enhancement requests

Having now spent something like 8 years working with Vantage and EPICOR
I'd like to toss out this thought.

There is one and ONLY one "Official" channel for enhancement requests
regarding Vantage and that is EPICOR itself.

Not this list, nor any other list. It would be a pointless waste of
time for any third party organization to create and maintain an
enhancement request database for Vantage.

EPICOR . HAS . an enhancement/bug database for Vantage. Every time you
call in and request something it is supposed to be entered into that
database.

The real issue here is the mechanism itself, not who controls it.
EPICOR
will ALWAYS control what enhancements are added to Vantage since it is,
after all, THEIR product.

About 8 years ago the Midwest Users Group tried to influence the
enhancement
mechanism within EPICOR. At the time we asked EPICOR what determined
which
enhancements actually made it into new releases. At the time we were
told that the "Number of hits" on an enhancement determined what was
considered. In other words, how many user companies requested that
specific enhancement? Ok, easy enough, as a user's group we printed off
about 100 enhancements that we knew about and printed them one per page
listing the EPICOR enhancement number, the description, and a spot where
user companies could fill in their company name, site ID, and a block
where they could add notes. Then, just for fun, we faxed the entire
stack to every company in the Midwest user's group. ( back before email
) Each user company then went through the stack and pulled the ones
they agreed with, filled them out, and then faxed them into EPICOR to be
added to the database. A week or so later I got a call from EPICOR
wanting to know who's bright idea it was to fax them several feet of
faxes? Furthermore, what exactly did we expect them to do with them
since they didn't have anyone who even had the time to deal with a few
feet of faxes .

Just because
the
product doesn't work the way you think it should doesn't make it a bug.
On the other hand 2 + 2 = 5 situations ARE bugs.
* How can we, as users, see the current list of enhancements and
bugs
in a readable format so we can see what's been recorded and what the
status is?
* If we call in to request an enhancement that a specific screen
should be blue instead of white and the enhancement is written up that
we would like it to be in Japanese . how can we spot these and get the
correct enhancement written up?
* How many companies have voted for a request? Can we easily add
to
the list?
* Could we take a day on the list to discuss one module like CRM
with
the developers to work up a list of suggestions?
* Etc etc.

Seriously, if we're going to discuss this . what is wrong with the
current program at EPICOR and how would you folks like to see it
changed?

On some level I suspect this comes down to a desire to help make the
product better so it better meets our needs running up against the
feeling that EPICOR is not listening and/or that you're voices are not
being heard.

So what should EPICOR do differently to make sure that you feel like you
do have a voice in the process?

Ok, not to put a Machiavellian spin on this thread or anything, but the
economics just don't support the existing user base for influencing the
direction of Epicor product development. Since they are a publicly traded
company, Epicor is driven by a single economic principle - maximizing
shareholder value, period. The market gauges value based on quarter to
quarter revenue and earnings growth. Because Epicor is a vertical market
software provider, they have two primary sources of revenue; new product
sales including implementation services revenue and product maintenance and
support revenue.

The recurring maintenance revenue stream supports ongoing expenses and
product development as well as providing a predictable revenue base that the
market interprets as a foundation for long term stability but adds nothing
to company revenue growth. Therein lays the problem for the existing
customer base. Since the ongoing revenues provided by the existing
customers do not contribute to the market's value equation, it does not
provide an economic incentive for the company to develop their product in
accordance with the needs of their existing customers. Rather, Epicor is
economically incented to invest its development resources toward product
enhancements that directly affect their growth potential and that lies
solely in new sales.

The only economically meaningful ways for the existing customer base to
influence product development are, one, to discontinue providing the ongoing
revenue in mass or, two, to become equity participants in the company. One
can only imagine the impact on product development the existing customer
base would have if they simultaneously withheld their annual maintenance
fees and used the available funds to purchase Epicor stock. The infighting
amongst the Epicor product community as evidenced by the differing
philosophies of the EUG and the Vantage onelist, for example, preclude the
unanimity of such a course of action but it still makes for a pleasant
fantasy none the less.

All of this, unfortunately, demonstrates that, in the end, it really doesn't
matter where a product enhancement list is hosted. It can be at Yahoo, on
Epicor's Clientele server or on George's iPod but if it doesn't directly
contribute to improving the potential for new product sales it will be
treated like the kid with a sibilance on an American Idol tryout.
