Vantage 9.05 Test Server

I had this discussion with management when we upgraded to Version 9 - their question, We never had a need for one in the past so why do we need one now? So while explaining the need (not benefits) I also sold them on the the idea that it could be used for disaster recovery, if/when the primary server crashed. While the test server is half the power of the live server, we could get by while the live server was rebuilt.

My boss wants to run our "test" server on the same server as our live. I have a "desktop" with windows server 2008 installed (trial) it is Intel Core I7 3.4 64bit 8GB RAM, that I have been playing trying to get Vantage installed on there. I prefer we just purchase the Server License, and keep that as a test server. He suggested just installing a "test" server on the live.

Any pro's or cons.....

Bad idea.

I assume by test server, you mean a server to test new service packs versus
something to test out a customization or bpm prior to application to your
production database.

There are so many risks that you could potentially corrupt your live
production environment when trying to update the test environment.

I have cleaned up way way way too many messes in my time from these
situations, just put it on another computer, doesn't need to be a server,
doesn't even need to be a server OS if you don't want to, speed is not the
key, functionality is what the testing is all about and the concern with a
test server for service packs and updates.

Overly cautious? When your environment fails, then make him sit with you as you clean up the mess...only then will he understand being overly cautious is not a bad idea!

Trust me it works...I made my former boss sit with me as I ranted about the extra work I had to do and how far behind it put me just because I wanted to be cautious ($500 for equipment instead of the 4 days it took me to fix everything - at 14 hour days). He never threw that in my face again and bought the equipment I wanted.

Overly cautious? When your environment fails, then make him sit with you
as you clean up the mess...only then will he understand being overly
cautious is not a bad idea!

Trust me it works...I made my former boss sit with me as I ranted about
the extra work I had to do and how far behind it put me just because I
wanted to be cautious ($500 for equipment instead of the 4 days it took
me to fix everything - at 14 hour days). He never threw that in my face
again and bought the equipment I wanted.

Bad idea.

I assume by test server, you mean a server to test new service packs
versus
something to test out a customization or bpm prior to application to
your
production database.

There are so many risks that you could potentially corrupt your live
production environment when trying to update the test environment.

I have cleaned up way way way too many messes in my time from these
situations, just put it on another computer, doesn't need to be a
server,
doesn't even need to be a server OS if you don't want to, speed is not
the
key, functionality is what the testing is all about and the concern with
a
test server for service packs and updates.

My boss wants to run our "test" server on the same server as our live. I
have a "desktop" with windows server 2008 installed (trial) it is Intel
Core I7 3.4 64bit 8GB RAM, that I have been playing trying to get
Vantage
installed on there. I prefer we just purchase the Server License, and
keep
that as a test server. He suggested just installing a "test" server on
the
live.

Any pro's or cons.....

No, not overly cautious at all, I don't think there is a single person here
who wouldn't back up using a completely different machine.

While I can understand balking at some costs, you can easily get a test
server built and running for under $1000, or even sub $500.

It's well worth the time and effort to have it, then you don't have any
worries about any cross talk or potential downtime due to a minor error in
the installation of a service pack or patch, you'll save money just on less
Tylenol you'll need to buy when you do have a problem because the headaches
are so bad.
