Vantage backup

I can't honestly say. I NEVER mess with the database or the bi file. This is
the beauty of Progress, you should not have to mess with it. I have found
that over the years the biggest performance improvement we ever saw was when
we went from raid 5 to raid 10. Our back up performance is great and I
assume that is due to drive speed since CPU utilization is nill. As far as
SQL if you are having performance problems with Progress you are really
going to have bigger issues going to MS-SQL. I'll defer final judgement
until I see the benchmarks with REAL databases not the little ones that are
usually used in testing.

Hey Keith,

Our Bi is 300 meg. Do you think truncating it would speed things up
considerably? The server is dual P200's with 256 megs of ram and slow
drives. I am waiting to see what kind of performance if any will be
gained from going to SQL server before I purchase a new box.
Hi All,

I was just wondering how long it takes for others to perform the nightly
backup using the Progress Utility. Our 1.4 gig database is taking
anywhere from 25 minutes to 3 hours to complete. Obviously when its
running it is slower than the Florida recount for wanding in and other
transactions. Is there anything I can do to speed it up besides getting
a new server? And why are some nights so much shorter than others?

TIA

Been curious about this myself. I'm running 3.0 & 8.3A. DB file is 104MB,
BI is 16MB. Extracting to an image file on a drive where the database
isn't takes 28 seconds. The verify pass takes another 5. The weird thing
is, during the extract, CPU utilization is low AND it is barely touching
the disk drive. Maybe it's waiting on the DB server processes to do
something? The verify pegs the CPU at 100% while it's dong its thing. Is
the verify really necessary for a disk image, or was that intended for
dumping out to a tape drive or something?

Couple things to check, Todd: is your BI file oversized? Our's grows up
to 16MB, then stays steady. Supposedly, some things can cause it to grow
oversized, and of course it never shrinks on its own. Any signs of CPU or
IO bottlenecks while it's running? You might try skipping the verify pass.

Oh yeah... mine's running on a P-II/450, 512MB, two quick SCSI drives.

Todd,

Our Db is 600+ MB, BI 35 MB and backup takes 3 minutes. I backup to the same
physical server then copy the backup over to a remote server. I think
backing up to the same server will help. We use the WinAT service to run
probackup and do the copy.

I scheduled our Progress backup to run 3 times daily (6am, 12:30pm, 12:00am) using the WinNT AT command.

70 mb db
4 mb bi

backed up in 26 seconds
verified in 4 seconds

Running on:
PII-333 / 256 / SBS 4.5
db on seperate SCSI disk than OS
Vantage 3 with 3 db's
Vantage 4 with 1 db

Our server is running a lot of things for it's size, but the Progress backup seems fairly quick. This must be due to the 18gb 7200 rpm disk Vantage is installed on?
