Vantage Clients Thrashing

Judd,

If you are having lockups in one department you should check to see if they
are all running on the same network switch. I had a problem with a group of
computers locking up in Vantage a year ago and the only thing in common was
the network switch. I replaced it with a new one and the problems went
away.

Also, check to see if they are on a routed network or set of IP addresses
that has a static path to another router. Sometimes this causes latency in
your network.

Hope no one minds if I reply to this too.

My screen saver is blank screen, Server is around 2-3 % workstation at 2-
0
%, I do see network traffic from the workstation when the lock happens.
The
lockup's seem to be in part tracker, part advisor, labor edit, and
engineering workbench. Our locks only seem to happen in our production
dept.
Sales, Accounting, Purchasing, all seem to be working fine. I have members
of each group on different hubs trying to see if it is a hub problem. But
the problem , for us, seems to be in the production area of vantage.

Peter, what do you see?

Peter -

Additional info -

What EXACTLY are the client PC's doing when they lock up? Report builder,
OE, ... what? Is there a pattern or are the lockup's truly random?

What is your server showing for CPU utilization while this is happening?

You don't by any chance have an active screen saver running on your server
do you? By active, I mean any screen saver that buzzes things around the
screen on the server. If so - turn it off by just using the "Blank
Screen"
screen saver. Active screen savers on you servers WILL consume most if
not
all of the CPU cycles and will kill performance. ( Unless, of course,
you
are gunning for new servers in which case this is a GREAT idea ! )

So ... 100% cpu on pc? ... 100% cpu on server? ... I/O activity on the
disk
drives on the server? ... Do you have your NIC's set to Full Duplex/100
everywhere? ( sometimes they will auto-sense to 10/half-duplex instead )
...
Random or patterned hang ups? ...

Thank you for responding! Server Side, we are running a dual 3.01 GHz
machine with 3 GB of RAM, 100 Mbit Ethernet and a mirrored 72 GB
drive. Workstations vary, with the exception of our data collection
PC's (Pentium Pro 100's), our minimum config is a PII 450 MHz
machine with 384 MB of RAM, running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and
Fast Ethernet. We are running CA's eTrust Antivirus software on the
clients and the server, however, we are not scanning the
Vantage/Progress stuff (at least on the server). Thank you for your
assistance/input.

We are in our third week of live production on Vantage and our major
recurring problem has been client PC's getting stuck (i.e., the
Vantage application stops responding, the title bar flickers and the
PC's cpu is at 100% capacity). We have to use the Task Manager to end
the Progress task. We corrected large fonts on one PC, however, other
workstations had small font settings. Any thoughts on why this might
be happening? We are on Vantage 6.1 and the PC's are running either
Windows NT 4.0 or Windows XP. Thank you in advance for any and all
help that you can provide.

Howdy,

Can you provide more details:

Server Side -

Amount of RAM
Network type and speed
Number of CPU's
Disk Subsystem configuration

Workstation Side -
Typical workstation setup
RAM
CPU
OS
Any other software running - antivirus etc
Network speed & type

Just a quick thought : if using antivirus software at the workstation make sure it doesn't scan the drive you have mapped to the Vantage server.
2nd quick thought : Epicor does NOT recommend realtime antivirus running on the Vantage server at all.

When our Vantage system was young and I first took over as network admin, we
had the same thing happening a lot. Before that would go away, I had to do
the following:

Good NIC's in ws's
Good network wiring
Enough ram in the ws's

Peter- Our PII's didn't work very well for Vantage. But then again, they
didn't work very well period - pretty used up. Our older version (4.5) of
McAfee didn't like Vantage that well. V4.51 was better, but still not
great. V7.0 made a big difference. -Gary

Hi again,

For debugging purposes, I would disable eTrust at the server completely and see if there are any improvement.

When you installed Vantage did you do anything outside the standard installation instructions ?
(for example are you using WINS in the Vantage setup but there actually isn't a WINS server on your network)
(is your working directory located on the local harddrives of the workstations?)

Did you set the SPIN Lock Retries parameter to 2000 for the two cpus ?
Did you set the number of Blocks in DB buffer to a reasonable value using the size of your db and the amount of RAM in the server as guidelines?

Is your network switched and running full duplex ?
Do you get the same performance using a workstation connected to the same switch/hub as the server?
Is the mirror a hardware or software mirror ?

Sorry about all the questions,

Charles

Your equipment sounds pretty new, I'm surprised your not running Gbit
Ethernet from the server to the switch.

Hi again,

For debugging purposes, I would disable eTrust at the server completely and
see if there are any improvement.

When you installed Vantage did you do anything outside the standard
installation instructions ?
(for example are you using WINS in the Vantage setup but there actually
isn't a WINS server on your network) (is your working directory located on
the local harddrives of the workstations?)

Did you set the SPIN Lock Retries parameter to 2000 for the two cpus ?
Did you set the number of Blocks in DB buffer to a reasonable value using
the size of your db and the amount of RAM in the server as guidelines?

Is your network switched and running full duplex ?
Do you get the same performance using a workstation connected to the same
switch/hub as the server?
Is the mirror a hardware or software mirror ?

Sorry about all the questions,

Charles

Our server as well has 3 gig ram. I installed vantage pointing at the IP .
so the host table is using IP and IP.

We also get the hour glass and the system hangs. After the user end's task I
clear the logon at the server.

All Help welcome! Tech support can not seem to figure this problem out. We

A far left field guess....but easy to check and rule out...

Sometimes after using a training database old entries get left in the client's HOSTS and/or SERVICES files. I think HOSTS is the main problem - especially if the training was done on another server from the eventual live server and the training server is no longer running. This can confuse the heck out of Vantage. Perhaps double check the HOSTS and SERVICES files and make sure they both look OK.

Hope no one minds if I reply to this too.

My screen saver is blank screen, Server is around 2-3 % workstation at 2- 0
%, I do see network traffic from the workstation when the lock happens. The
lockup's seem to be in part tracker, part advisor, labor edit, and
engineering workbench. Our locks only seem to happen in our production dept.
Sales, Accounting, Purchasing, all seem to be working fine. I have members
of each group on different hubs trying to see if it is a hub problem. But
the problem , for us, seems to be in the production area of vantage.

Peter, what do you see?

Great Suggestion Todd C, Here I have checked and the host file seems ok, I
have also installed the vantage ocx files.

A far left field guess....but easy to check and rule out...

Sometimes after using a training database old entries get left in the
client's HOSTS and/or SERVICES files. I think HOSTS is the main problem -
especially if the training was done on another server from the eventual live
server and the training server is no longer running. This can confuse the
heck out of Vantage. Perhaps double check the HOSTS and SERVICES files and
make sure they both look OK.

We are having the same problem here! The config is about the same except we
are using Norton Corp v9.0 I do not scan any vantage directory on the
server, the workstations are winxp with 512 meg ram, The local temp is on
the workstations. I do not scan the temp directories or vantage's mapped
drive. We are hardware mirror. I have been all through the progress
explorer Here is the config:

# Block in db buffer 60000

#hash 0

Lock table 1000000

Spin lock 50000

Our server as well has 3 gig ram. I installed vantage pointing at the IP .
so the host table is using IP and IP.

We also get the hour glass and the system hangs. After the user end's task I
clear the logon at the server.

All Help welcome! Tech support can not seem to figure this problem out. We
have been live for 2 mo. During training this problem did not happen.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage Clients Thrashing

We are in our third week of live production on Vantage and our major
recurring problem has been client PC's getting stuck (i.e., the
Vantage application stops responding, the title bar flickers and the
PC's cpu is at 100% capacity). We have to use the Task Manager to end
the Progress task. We corrected large fonts on one PC, however, other
workstations had small font settings. Any thoughts on why this might
be happening? We are on Vantage 6.1 and the PC's are running either
Windows NT 4.0 or Windows XP. Thank you in advance for any and all
help that you can provide.

Sincerely,

Excellent point on the screen saver - all of the OpenGL screen savers will suck up 100% of the cpu.
The others like Marquee and Starfield have virtually zero impact on cpu utilization.

If so - turn it off by just using the "Blank Screen"
screen saver. Active screen savers on you servers WILL consume most if not
all of the CPU cycles and will kill performance. ( Unless, of course, you
are gunning for new servers in which case this is a GREAT idea ! )

So ... 100% cpu on pc? ... 100% cpu on server? ... I/O activity on the disk
drives on the server? ... Do you have your NIC's set to Full Duplex/100
everywhere? ( sometimes they will auto-sense to 10/half-duplex instead ) ...
