Vantage crash

Seems to me that you could test this theory by just un-plugging their
workstation from the network, and try to navigate in Outlook or Vantage.

Any time that I have seen a connection cut , I don't remember Vantage
just "disappearing", but it usually gives you a plethora of "ok" boxes
talking about not able to find "widget" etc, which ends with a progress
screen telling you to "hit spacebar to exit"..

We have witnessed the same phenomena you are talking about, and you are
right that we cannot duplicate it. I personally have never seen it
happen, but enough users have complained that I know something is going
on.
I suspect it has something to do with a record locking problem between
two users, since it is so "random", and not duplicable.

We have never seen this happen on Vantage 3 or 4.

I have not called tech support on this one because I have no
evidence.... very frustrating!!!

I have a situation that's driving me crazier.
Ever since day-light savings time, I have some
workstations that crash when they right-click
on date fields (to bring up calandar). This
seems to happen every other day. And only in
one location. I have re-installed Vantage,
checked network settings, NIC settings, etc.
I cannot discover what's causing this to
happen. In another building, I never have
this problem.
Can anyone recommend a course of action or a
strong drink?
Paul Siebers once posted this.

It appears the Microsoft MSVCRT40.DLL (a "C" run-time program) which
was
written to believe Daylight Saving Time is April 8th, not the first.
Using the solution below will workaround the problem:

1) Both Progress tech support and Microsoft (MS article
Q182042) confirm the error. Both are currently saying to "Uncheck Day
Light Savings on your Server and manually set the time ahead one
hour. For
Report Builder reports make the same correction on the client
workstation
setting it ahead an hour also.

2) After April 8th, turn on Daylight Saving Time again and
adjust the clock accordingly.

I don't think it will help but it's worth a try. I suspect it does
have to do with your OS though.

And I would recommend red wine for crashes, and Jack Daniels for data
conversions.

A double Bacardi and Coke, followed by one or two Guinness Extra Stouts will
do the trick for the short term...
Or you can visit with my two neighbors, Sam Adams and Jack Daniels.

Actually, the daylight savings time issue was separate from the one Dick
describes, since my issue happened before and after the mods as described
below. But yes, you're right, Liam. I did post on this issue, and yes, I
am still fighting it, the complaining users and the horrible demons of my
most recent delirium tremens.
It seems that on, only a few work stations (but always the same), for no
reason at all, but usually after data has been entered and people are going
on to the next screen, all of a sudden Vantage "disappears" from the screen.
I have witnessed the phenomenon myself on a few occasions, but I could not
reproduce it. When I repeat the same procedure on the same system (after
the user logs back into Vantage) everything goes fine.

HOWEVER; --and this JUST in-- my users are reporting also that Outlook goes
down sometimes right with it. Of course they could not be specific (was the
connection to the server lost, or did Outlook just lock up altogether),
because to them it just plain doesn't work. But due to the fact that more
programs are affected, I am now leaning towards a bad or flukey hub in my
stack. As we speak I am having my network admin tracing down every
connection. If each of the users can be traced down to the same hub, it
will be a no-brainer. With the prices of switches coming down like they
have been, this might be a powerful argument to replace our 4 aging 24 port
hubs with brand new switches. It would be the first time in my career to
see a hub actually failing, however, I can't rule out the possibility yet.

I will keep you guys updated....

Course of action? In these situations, we sometimes refer to what we call
the "9mm corrective action".

Can you tell its Friday? <grin>
