Not sure it was the exact same thing but we have seen similar. First of all, don't turn on audit logging. It will crash the system very quickly. They are working on a patch which I think is in 8.03.400 but until then make sure you are not using this function
Second, make sure the attachements are pointing to a place on the server where every one has access and priveleges to get to them. We have seen problems with app servers where they hangup because they can't access the file and keep trying until the app servers hang and kick people off. Also, look at your app server settings. If you are seeing this problem it may be because the app server time out is set too long (i.e. 30 minutes) Your app servers will not kill these processses before then. Try setting it to around 3 minutes and see if that helps
