Vantage/Network speed

Todd,

In terms of Vantage and other client server apps the effect was
noticeable but negligible; mainly just from the improved latency.
ThatÂ’s kind of expected since a well designed client server
application seeks to minimize network traffic as much as possible.
Where Cat-6 really shines is a large file transfer. We saw a 30 to
35% improvement in moving files in the 100M to 1G range immediately.
I would expect this to apply to your DentistÂ’s image files more than
productivity apps.

There is one catch, however. Once we opened up the network bandwidth
with Cat-6 the bottleneck became the CPU. Yep, processing the IP
stack would peg the CPU well before we reached 1Gb throughput. The
answer appears to be a TCP/IP Offload Engine NIC. Check out:

We havenÂ’t tested one yet but they have an eval program where you can
purchase up to two at half price. The single port board is $499.
Also, we didnÂ’t have a server with PCI-X so we would have been choked
by the bus. But, a new server is on the way and IÂ’ll let you know if
the T-NIC is worth the extra bucks.

Michael

Has anyone done any testing on Cat-5e vs. Cat-6 in terms of performance?

Any real world #'s on the impact on Vantage in terms of startup time or
runtimes?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson
