Vantage on Remote Server

Juliet,

We run 2 remote facilities with 3-5 Vantage users each over a T-1.
Actually, the network only gets 10/24's of the line or 640K. Our phone
system uses the rest. We cache a copy of the Vantage and Progress folders
on the remote servers.

I'm guessing response time is 1/10 as fast as what it is at our main
facility. Is it wonderful - NOT .... Does it get the job done - yup.

We have another plant that is connected with a T1. Vantage performance
is slow. I found the bellow article in my archives. I have a few
questions on the general setup. I would like to do this.

Could anyone provide more details on doing this? What do you do with
the Progress portion of the setup? Do you point back to the original
location for that.

Thanks so much!

We have a similar setup except with a T1. Vantage is installed on the
remote server in exactly the same way as it's installed on the "real"
Vantage server. The Vantage mapped drive letter is the same LETTER for
users at both sites but the remote user's mapped drive is the one on
their
local server. The only difference is the vantage.vtg file on the remote
server. In the "ConnectOptions " line, replace the local server's name
with the "real" Vantage server's name.

The only problem is that every time you install Vantage on a new machine
at
the remote site, you have to fix the vantage.vtg file again. You also
have
to keep the patches and/or custom programming the same on both servers.

We are using Vantage in two facilities, about 1 mile apart. We are
networked via a 10MBT microwave.
The IPL in the remote location is from 30 - 50 seconds. After load,
response times average around
3 seconds.
I would like to install the Vantage libraries on a server in the remote
facility, in hopes of improving
performance. I looked for a document on ERAnet that pertains to this
procedure but was unable to
find anything.
If anyone has any information on how to accomplish this, I would
appreciate
hearing from you.
Epicor has checked my LG file and has given me the thumbs up on startup
parameters.
Thanks in advance.

My recommendation is to not waste your time. Even with a T1 your bandwidth
is 1/10th the worst local ethernet connection. Factor in line quality and
transmission time and you will never see reasonable performance in my
opinion. We tried local and remote installs, none were acceptable, you need
to use a Citrix/Terminal server solution. There are other similar options
out there but I use Citrix Metaframe with a 384 Kbs frame circuit and have
15 remote users. The performance is about 80-90% of the normal local
connection.... Just my two cents.

PS Search the archives on this subject there is a lot of info.
