Vantage Printing

We had a problem here with a workstation that would not print
invoices after the first batch unless Vantage was restarted locally.
After the reinstalling Vantage and Progress on that machine it
printed fine.

We are using an Okidata MicroLine 320 Turbo, 9 pin printer for
printing Shipping & Recieving, through a Winterm. I cannot seem to
take printer out of Graphics mode and set to plain Text mode
printing. I wish to speed up the printing process. I'm thinking that
Crystal reports may be the culprit. Has anyone seen this?

Maybe someone else knows more but from my experience with this very printer
and from my last job working for a software development company unless you
use the "generic text printer" driver, the Okidata's print in graphic mode.
It has to do with the way Windows creates print jobs which are optimized for
inkjets and lasers. The problem with the generic driver is that you lose a
lot of formatting on the print job. Good luck, if you figure it out I'd be
interested. Again there may be an answer but I haven't found one.

You will probably have to use the windoze "generic / text only" driver to
do this. Even in draft mode, all the drivers I've experimented with still
send everything as graphics.

Unfortunately, Crystal Reports is a flaky p.o.s. with the generic print
driver. Text will just disappear off forms if the vertical alignment isn't
exactly to its liking (I think it wants everything in the form design to be
*perfectly* aligned on the rows.) Paper size settings are ignored, and it
uses those from windows' default printer, instead (possibly a limitation of
the driver, not CR.) Fonts can be troublesome, but it behaves much better
if you configure the driver with the control codes to select the basic font
pitches (10/12/17cpi.)

I spent way too many hours trying to solve the same printing problem.
Changed drivers, setup, etc. and finally gave up and traded it in on a
Minolta Laser printer.

We also use the same printer for our purchase orders. As I remember,
there is a way to set the printer for the default print font and print
quality. You are also correct in that an application can use it's own
settings which will be in the printer properties of the printer. I had
to set it both on the report and also (if my memory is correct) I also
set the properties on the computer that was servicing that printer.

It is also important that you load the correct drivers for the printer.
I played with both the Okidata drivers and also the emulated drivers
until I found one that worked best and settled on the OKI ML 320 driver.

I hope this helps

I used one for my purchase orders for a time. Trying lying to the printer
by using the Epson LQ570+ ESC/P 2 driver. Then in the printer preferences
set the quality to 180x180. That's what I did when I used an Oki ML320.

I got this message from a user today (see below). Has anyone seen this before? I am going to start digging but I thought I would shoot this out to the list.

In Vantage, once I have sent something to one printer I can not send to another printer. The only way I have found to switch printers is to close my session, reopen it and then send to a different printer. Duane has said he does not have this problem.

What version of vantage?
What are you printing? Crystal, Report builder, standard rpt.

I haven't had that problem. I will print jobs to my printer, and then hit
print again and send to another printer in our packing department.

We have one user who's PC is doing this sort of thing. She has 1
physical printer with 2 trays set up as 2 different printers. She
has problems printing to the 2nd tray after she has printed to the
1st. Closing Vantage and reopening makes it work. We have several
other machines set up the same way and they function just fine. We
haven't spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. Let us know if
you find something.
