Vantage Security

Dale, with no offense intended, if you are newbies and have no SQL DBA
in-house, the safest approach would be to re-key everything... It takes
a thorough understanding of the tables involved and a little bit of
trickery. It's a pain upfront, but down the road you'll thank yourself.

Yes - we are a SQL account but are total "newbies" to this DB.

We are a new account in the midst of implementation and are currently
working on our security strategy. The plan is to enter the security
clearances into TEST for our upcoming simulations and conference room
pilot. More than likely we will be tweaking the security until we get
it right.

My question is...once we are comfortable with the security settings is
there a way to copy the security to LIVE?

You don't have to re-key everything.

Just kidding...sorry but unless someone found an undocumented way to do
this, you'll be re-keying.

If you are on V8.x there is a way. but. it takes a lot of planning and a
very good db administrator or consultant.

Making copies of your db's in a "live" testing environment is a way of doing
this. there is a lot more to it but it can be done and is being done at some
of Epicor's largest Multi-site, multi-company solutions.

I have done this in the past; it is not an easy copy test to live only what
I want, but it can be done depending on how you configured your db and if
you are using SQL, Progress, etc.

There is plenty of planning behind it and a lot of testing.

During implementation, you probably have an admin only default db and public pilot dbs which are overwritten & copied from default as you make changes.

Make as many permanent changes (like this) on the default admin only db if it is not an experimental change.

That will save a great deal of 'rekeying'.

That admin only default db will eventually be your live db.

You are in luck! There are ways of doing what you need. Since you are
"newbies" to this I would recommend getting professional help :-) and I just
not talking about a shrink.

Good luck.

How about using a scripting program like AutoIT? I'm not sure this would work because a) I'm not familiar with the security setup screens, and b) I am a newbie at scripting. However, it seems that if you have the two databases, test and live open beside each other, you could write a script to take the data from the form in test and then copy it into the form in live. Of course, it might take more time to set up the script than to just key everything.
