Vantage topic's

Sounds like you're getting slammed Mark. I think the Off-topics can be
large and sometimes time consuming just like this one, but have to agree
with the majority here. I don't contribute much but have learned allot or
at least learned you can do allot of cool things in Vantage. And having
four kids myself I know the pain I'm in when I one of them gets hurt. I am
glad to hear that Austin is doing better by the way. A guy once complained
to me about the cold winters in Canada and how he hated them. The fix is
simple: "if you don't like it move". Keep up the good work guys and I hope
we can learn more from each other in the future, be it off topic or not.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage topic's

I'm not here to step on anyone's toe's here but the number of topic's not to
do with Vantage and it is getting a bit ridicules.

I've have been pretty busy for the last 2 weeks and the number of Vantage
email generated from this group is over 500. I don't know about others, but
it is getting a little annoying to the extent I don't bother reading 80
percent of them.

I personally believe if you want to know about caller Id and what hard drive
to buy people should subscribe to forums that specialize in that stuff, I'm
sure the are other that feel the same way. And yes I have tried Digest mode
and I find it disjointed and hard to follow interesting topic like........

Missing customers in 5.20
[Vantage] 5.2 conversion
5.2 Question
5.20 Issue - A/R Locking Caused by Customer Shipment Tracker
5.20 Part Revision Approval
and so on these are the topics most people are here for.....

I'm not a moderator and the group has been a great help over the last 3
years but I just had to say something

I know it is a lot to read but some of the absolute gems that are not
exactly "on-topic" are very valuable to me. And if something is not
relevant to my site I just skip over it. There are a lot of pure Vantage
topics that don't apply to how we use Vantage now but may in the future and
being able to search back through my archives is extremely helpful.
Likewise for many of the other not so on-topic subjects which are often
still relevant to managing a Vantage site. While we are not all IT people I
suspect a large majority of those using this Yahoo Group are responsible for
anything involving keeping Vantage running, including things like hard drive
reliability. In a sense we are a very "like minded" group of people dealing
with many common issues. We face the same sorts of day to day struggles and
in much the same framework of pressures and resource limits. Computing in a
manufacturing environment. Being able to pose a question not exactly about
Vantage but related to any part of this working environment has be a huge
help to me personally.

And as for way off topic personal stuff and a bit of humor once in awhile;
well, hey, after a while you get to sort of "know" the other folks who post
here (you think you do anyway) and consider them to be friends, comrades,
mates... Worthy of listening to, sympathizing with and laughing with. A
great stress reliever for a tough job.

Mostly people are pretty good about prefacing the subject with "OT". You
could easily (with most email servers) filter anything with [Vantage] and OT
straight to a separate folder.

You bring up a good point Mark. As a suggestion I often run across a topic
which has no interest to me or a situation where I walk in from a couple of
days away and find I have 40,80,200, etc... messages and would like to bulk
delete from my email.

If your using Outlook 2000 there is a feature:
While reading a mail message that has no interest to you,
Select ACTIONs from the pull down menu.
Select FIND ALL then either RELATED MESSAGES or MESSAGES FROM SENDER...
Then highlight and delete.

Or just sort unread mail by topic then select a range and delete.

You will find Outlook equally powerful in deleting mail as it is creating
it.

Hope this helps.

Not to start a "me too" thread but I have to concur with Todd. When I
read the original post I almost started hyperventilating. I probably
gleaned more working knowledge from the off topics than the actual
vantage topics. I couldn't tell you how much time and money it has
saved us personally. I would hate to see off topics go.

Good call Todd, I'm an IS/IT guy who relies allot on this group. I use Vantage very little, but I'm the guy they call for the answers. So when an Off Topic question comes along that I can help with, I like to think It's my way of giving back to the group. And like most of us, 70% of the message are of no interest to me. But the Off Topic messages are just as valuable to me even if they have nothing to do with Vantage. Even information like "To all that prayed and/or responded: Austin is home from the hospital". That gave me a good feeling all day.

I agree with Todd on this.

What I do is have outlook sort the OT titled threads to a separate folder
where I can either view them or erase them automatically using outlook tasks
as desired. 99% of the time I read them in my spare time. I like the cross
chatter that happens since it puts a human voice to the forum and at times
can give a smile through the day. And lets face it when most companies
process end of the month it's good to have a smile. :)

And as for way off topic personal stuff and a bit of humor once in awhile;
well, hey, after a while you get to sort of "know" the other folks who post
here (you think you do anyway) and consider them to be friends, comrades,
mates... Worthy of listening to, sympathizing with and laughing with. A
great stress reliever for a tough job.

Mostly people are pretty good about prefacing the subject with "OT". You
could easily (with most email servers) filter anything with [Vantage] and OT
straight to a separate folder.

Respectfully,
-Todd Caughey

I don't normally get involved in many of the topics that get tossed on
this forum either. I did sign up for this group for Vantage knowledge
and wasn't expecting all the other stuff. However, I think knowledge or
help in any way shape or form and wherever it comes from is awesome. In
the 2 years I have been using this list, whenever someone has an
OFFTOPIC question they tend to label it as such. Yes, there are lots of
messages that come in that I don't even bother reading but I look at the
topic and delete the message, as necessary, based on the topic. If it's
something I am interested in, I read it, if not it's deleted. I have
thought of many new things to do with Vantage and my network that have
been started because of questions and respected responses from this
group. I for one like the extra discussions. Of course, I don't mean
to step on your toes by saying it, but I definitely thought your
comments were something I should respond to because I get good
information from this forum. For the most part we all are in the same
boat at the places we work at. We all wear many hats and do many
things. A concentrated group of people getting together and sharing
Vantage knowledge and whatever else can be very helpful and a time
saver.

I too appreciate and value all the various topics presented and discussed here.

The part that is really getting annoying, however, is the disjointed manner in which yahoo is sending out messages: Replies coming before the original message. I received
Mark's original message after reading 6-10 replies to it. This happens frequently. Why are some of you getting them in the correct order and others not and how do I become
one the 'chosen' to get them in order?

I've told you a million times do not exaggerate!

Your message number is 23419 and was posted on 12/11 at 11:09pm. Going back
two weeks worth puts us at message 23125 on 11/27 at 5:28pm. Now if my math
is correct 23419 - 23125 = 294 which I do believe is not over 500.

Second, the list was started in July of 2000, which by my calendar does not
even make the list 3 yrs old yet.

Third, if we look at all the month totals for the since the list was started
(excluding the 1st and last since these are not complete months) and take
the average message count per month it comes to 805 messages. Dividing that
in half gives me 402 per every two weeks, which again is larger that 294.
So by average, we are behind in messages.

Out of all the lists I belong to, I have to say that this one the Moderators
do an exceptional job at keeping unrelated topics off. I say let the topics
run. Knowledge never hurts anyone. You don't have to read everything and
almost every e-mail has a decent enough subject line that you can just get
by with reading that and deciding whether or not to delete the message. And
if you want to get technical, "5.2 Conversion" is not really a "Vantage"
topic because this is a procedure that is done outside of the Vantage
software itself.

Just my .02 cents worth...... Happy Holidays everyone.......

Mark/Everyone:

Well since I'm the person that sent a purely personal email to everybody
(about my son) I felt I needed to reply.

First, I'm sorry if I irritated anyone by doing that, but I was in a "freak
out" mode and really wanted to contact a large group that I sort of feel are
"friends", or at least "friendly".

Second, I like the large variety of topics that our "community" brings up.
If something is of no interest, I just hit the Delete key.

Third, I would like to propose that we have a standard off topic moniker
such as {OT} or some such thing so that Outlook can do its sorting or
deleting as each person prefers.

Again, I'm sorry if I have used the list in a manner that doesn't make
everyone's day. I'm just trying to use it as I have come to find a comfort
level with.

I happen to enjoy the off topic e-mail. I find there have been several
things in the past that helped me. There have been others that just
confirmed what I already thought. I dont have a problem with it and think
it adds value to this e-group.

I try not to send messages to the group that will cause a flood of
controversy. I think the originating e-mail on this thread has basically
caused more activity instead of less.

Whatever happens I hope the moderators know that I like the list just as it
is. It only takes me a few minutes to ditch the e-mail that I dont want
to read.

Rick,

Absolutely no need to apologize! Maybe its the stress of the holiday
season or everybody woke up on the wrong side of the bed but it seems
that there are a lot of moody people today. Don't feel for a moment
that you owe anybody an apology. If we can't extend common decency in
this newsgroup than what can we do?

I like the off topics. They can often help make my job a lot easier and at
times give a laugh or lift a spirit.

Rick,

This is a unique situation, in that this group is friendly and considerate
enough to make you feel comfortable seeking its support at a time when you
were where we all will be at one time or another - standing on that edge
lookin' down. I value everything about this group, and am willing to put up
with having to use the delete key if that's all it takes to get the goodies
(of which there a lot).

I'm just trying to use it as I have come to find a comfort
level with.

I'm not here to step on anyone's toe's here but the number of topic's not
to
do with Vantage and it is getting a bit ridicules.

I've have been pretty busy for the last 2 weeks and the number of Vantage
email generated from this group is over 500. I don't know about others,
but
it is getting a little annoying to the extent I don't bother reading 80
percent of them.

I personally believe if you want to know about caller Id and what hard
drive
to buy people should subscribe to forums that specialize in that stuff,
I'm
sure the are other that feel the same way. And yes I have tried Digest
mode
and I find it disjointed and hard to follow interesting topic like........

Some companies have the luxury of having several people in their IT departments, each one specialized in different areas. Up until
a few months ago I was the only one in our IT department. That meant and still means I have to find all kinds of solutions for our
needs to make Vantage or other aspects of IT work flawlessly. I am sure there are a lot of people like me in the group. Exchanging
ideas and advices are important. Otherwise who do you ask those questions? Also I call Vantage Tech Support with various questions
on OS or hardware and they never said that it was not a Vantage related question and they couldn't help me. Any way, may be we
shouldn't overdo [OT], but shouldn't completely eliminate it either.
