Vantage Upgrade Problem

Boy does that IDXBUILD command bring back some bad memories. We upgraded
from 4 to 5 in early Dec. I took the advice from several members of this
list to do it on a test machine first. So I started the process in early
Nov. by upgrading on my notebook. After several failed attempts I finally
got a clean upgrade and thought I was ready for the real thing. On
conversion weekend as a precaution I upgraded both the server and my
notebook (again) at the same time. I ended up aborting the database
conversion on the server. Even though the server was a faster machine with
2 processors it took longer because we were running raid 5 on the server. I
remember tec support saying the best situation is a machine with 2 hard
drives. One to read from; one to write to. Hope this experience helps.

Our IDXBUILD would crash out just after phase one with an error. Finally
after dumping and loading the database and coming up with the same error we
checked out the ERAnet. We discovered a command you should use if your
database (Vantage.D1) is larger than 2 gig or you have multiple extents
adding up to more than 2 gig. It is as follows.

C:\Epic50\Progress\Bin\_proutil vantage -C idxbuild -TB 24 -TM 32

You will get a prompt to run on all just press "A" for all.

You will get a prompt "Do you have enough space for index sorting" answer
"N" for no.

The IDXBUILD will start.

I had similar troubles this weekend as well. I got past the idx build
(I never heard about the command in the instructions being
incorrect....what should I use?) The IDX build returned 2 errors but I
figured them to just be minor db errors and would move onto the schema
change

Looks like I have been subject to a hack attack
Someone tried every two minutes last night to get into my servers
For 6 hours
Luckily I have an account lock out on user accounts from 9pm to 5am
so that I can perform backups
Anyway one of my users got in at 5am and this person does not come to
work until around 7am!
Thus I believe I have been hacked
This started last night at 9:15pm and went on every 2 minutes until
5am this morning
(I have been monitoring my event viewer)
In response I have deleted the users account and created a new one
Any way I can get a better idea of audting the user accoutns to see
what users are doing and where they are going
So I can determin if someone gets in during that time I will see what
they were doing.
By the way I am running NT 4 servers

I REALLY Appreciate anyones help

James,

Do you have a firewall? If so, can you see from the logs what went on?
Or could this all be the result of a back up software gone haywire trying to
access shares?

Good luck in any case...

You really need to purchase a firewall, soon!

Even a relatively inexpensive router/firewall would be sufficient if you have a limited budget.

Amen - when our regular firewall went out I rushed to CompUSA and grabbed a
simple Linksys NAT capable router for under $100. Until I got it in service
our Internet connection was unplugged. It had severe restrictions on
Internet connections (max 3 I think) but we limped by until the regular
firewall was replaced.

I was just reading an article and had to post this as well......

It sounds as if you network has been penetrated.

http://staff.washington.edu/dittrich/misc/ddos/

This link has some defensive tools you can use to detect denial of service software loaded on the suspect PC, or for that matter your whole network.

I am not familiar with these tools but I sure as heck would be really, really, really paranoid about "hackerware" running on my network server(s) or workstations as you read this email.

Such as....

Denial of Service software (DOS)
Distributed Denial of Service software (DDOS)
Back Orifice and its ilk.

I think you are going to have to spend some serious time and money making sure there are no "holes" for hackers to use.

Take Todd's advice, just run out and purchase a cheap firewall box. (To keep hackers out)
While you're at it, look at software like Zone Alarm (which is a software firewall) which can also prevent data from being sent out. (To keep hacked data in)

Good Luck,
Sorry to hear it,
I'm glad its not me,

Paranoidally yours

Rich

Good Monday AM to everyone. We tried to upgrade from Vantage 4 to Vantage 5
this weekend. After figuring out the IDXBUILD command in the installation
instructions was not the one we should be using things seemed to get better.
We have a multi-volume database that is larger than 2.0GB, so you have to
change the command a bit. That worked, but the Schema Changes ran for about
40 hours before we dropped back and punted. We are still on version 4.00
right now. During our testing a few weeks back it only took us about 8
hours to run the Schema change, but the database was just a bit below the
2.0GB status.

We ran the Schema change from a NT4.0 Workstation pretty fast machine that
is on the same switch as the server. The CPU was maxed out at 100% during
the Phase 2 of Schema changes.

We are going to do more testing this week, but wanted to see if anyone else
had this problem and if so what can you do about it.

Thanks in Advance for your comments

Make sure that you give tech support a call and ask for the fast schema
change utilities. These make the schema changes go so much faster. The
only downside is that someone needs to check in periodically to see if they
are done to start the next one.

I had similar troubles this weekend as well. I got past the idx build
(I never heard about the command in the instructions being
incorrect....what should I use?) The IDX build returned 2 errors but I
figured them to just be minor db errors and would move onto the schema
change. After about 30-45 minutes into phase 2 (1ghz processor and 256
meg ram on the machine running the test with the vantage db on the same
machine with no other network processes running on a 300MB db) the
screen would just disappear. I was expecting some sort of finished
screen or something, but figured I would run vantage 5.0 to see what
would happen. To my dismay, it just brought back up the screen saying I
needed to do schema changes.

Long story short, I am still running vantage 4.0 this Monday. You'd
think that for the amount of money spent on maintenance, we should only
have to ftp in the database and Epicor should run the changes,
conversions, and schema changes and send the new db back in the version
we want.
