Vantage Version 8

Once you bring over your live database everything you have added
will have to be re-done. I figured this out one week before our go-
live date. I literally wrote down everything I customized to bring
it over. The nice thing is that any screen customizations can be
exported and then re-imported. But you will need to re-create any
custom report styles or data definitions.

I wish I would of known this from the get-go but once you have it
done its good to go!

Just going LIVE today. Was probably the best day. I have two sites and only
one site is open today. So far users are complaining about speed but no
major issues with functionnalities yet.

I had to perform a Dump&Load of the database before running the upgrade to
fix AP posting wich was running for over 30 minutes now it runs under one
minute. I strongly recommand doing it.

With the second site starting tomorrow 3 times as many users, thing will
probably a different thing but so far so good.

#1 recommandation; install it on your users computer at least 2 months
before the GO live to give them a chance to look at it.
#2 recommandation; training and patience. Do not assume that you current
workstation will work as good with Vantage 8.0. Needs at least 1GB of RAM.

We are in the process of running our trials with V8 to see if we will
go the whole hog and upgrade. Speed issues are the main complaints
and there are only a limited number of solutions to increase it.
The main one is client RAM. When Epicor say you need 512-768MB
minimum, ignore that and go for at least 1GB. This allows you to get
your most used screens memory-cached which will then appear instantly
after an initial lengthy loading procedure (you'll get good at making
coffees!).

After a certain amount of tweaking, you do have to realise that
Vantage 8 is always going to be slower that the previous versions.
The trick is to make it _appear_ faster for your users. Do not
install V8 first, then upgrade the machines. Make sure that the
system is set up as best as possible before any users get their hands
on it. First impressions are VERY important with this upgrade. As a
result of not getting this quite right, our MD is considering the
possibility of not even moving from our current version (but I've got
some allies to help him change his mind).

Initial thoughts before we had 8 installed were for a couple of
months of trialling, get to where we are now in terms of
functionality with V4. Go live, then start fiddling with the new
features. I have to say that this method is not the best way of doing
things as there are many benefits to changing the way you carry out
your daily routines to fit in with vantage 8.

The customisation possibilities are endless as you can completely re-
design alomost any screen in the system. The documentation is getting
better, although there are still gaps in the help files. So far,
support have been fairly timely in their response to our queries and
we've not had any major show-stoppers yet.

Overall, I'd say that if you're happy with V6.1 then stick with it
for a bit longer. There still seems to be a lot of patches coming out
for 8 and it doesn't quite seem to be mature yet. If, on the other
hand, you're dying to use some of the features that only 8 will give
you, then get an upgrade plan sorted and commence preparation.

Apologies for length.

Jonny
We are presently implementing Vantage 8.0.

How is it going? I'm told that upgrading to Vantage 8.0 is like
implementing a new system. I'm trying to get an idea if it worth the
investment.

We were on Epicor's DataFlo product, and so far I would not disagree with
the "starting over" comment. We purchased late December '05, and are
about half way through the training. Epicor is being challenged with
keeping its consultants and training materials up-to-date with the number
of patches that are being released.

Can I change my previous comment? I upgraded to Vantage 8.00 over the week
end and it was probably the worst move I could have done. Having a few users
testing Vantage 8.0 is one thing. But having 46 users doing intesive entries
in the system takes a lot of resources out of the server and it's not worth
the upgrade at this point. My server's CPU usage is alway between 30 and
90%. At 9:00 this mornig it was slow but 6 hours later it keeps getting
slower and slower.

Just something to consider. This sounds like my Vantage 6.1 upgrade.
Come to find out my virus software needed to be told to ignore the
Vantage processes. Another thing that helped was not letting the
computer turn off the network card.

We were on Epicor's DataFlo product, and so far I would not disagree
with
the "starting over" comment. We purchased late December '05, and are
about half way through the training. Epicor is being challenged with
keeping its consultants and training materials up-to-date with the
number of patches that are being released.

How is it going? I'm told that upgrading to Vantage 8.0 is like
implementing a new system. I'm trying to get an idea if it worth the
investment.

Make sure to contact your CAM to get all pertinent information. They
have a pretty decent process drawn out already. Saying 8.0 is a
resource hog is a major understatement. Finally, as mentioned
previously, make sure your users are comfortable once the switch is
made. We have not flipped the switch yet. We still plan on testing
procedures for a couple of months.

Thanks for the advice on the dump & load. I was wondering if I should
do that or not.

Just going LIVE today. Was probably the best day. I have two sites and
only
one site is open today. So far users are complaining about speed but no
major issues with functionnalities yet.

I had to perform a Dump&Load of the database before running the upgrade
to
fix AP posting wich was running for over 30 minutes now it runs under
one

Needs at least 1GB of
RAM.

Regarding "Flipping the Switch"

This can't be as easy as is said. Once you are comfortable with 8.0,
and have tested processes for a few months, isn't it true that any
changes made to Vantage during that time will have to be re-done once
you flip the switch and bring over live data?

I have this feeling that I have to write down everything I change /
customize / add / delete etc, so that when I re-import data for the
go-live, I can re-do all of those things over the weekend.

Is this right? Anyone have any experience?

Forgot one. Change Vantage user names whose Windows login is more than 8 characters for automatic login.
