Vantage.vtg file mysteriously changing

Brian,

I'd suggest you create a new directory at the same level as "Vantage" ...
call it "XX-user" where XX are your companies initials.

This directory should be "Outside" of the Vantage directory.

Such as:

X:\Vantage
X:\Progress
X:\XX-User

At any rate - setup your VTG files and the Icons pointing to them in this
directory and make them read-only to the network.

Copy the Icons to your user's desktops via logon scripts or by hand.

This way the VTG files that your users are using are totally separate from
the Vantage pre-defined icons. If you do a client install and overlay the
VTG files in the root of the Vantage directory it will be a who cares
situation since your "Production" VTG files and Icons are in a separate
directory.

I also keep in my DB's in a directory called "XX-DB"

Such as:

X:\XX-DB
X:\XX-DB\Pro\ .... this directory for our production DB
X:\XX-DB\Test\ .... this directory for our test DB
X:\XX-DB\M-End\ .... a copy of Pro done at month end if accounting needs to
ponder / test
X:\XX-DB\YR-End\ .... a copy of Pro done at year end to "Freeze" the DB for
any pesky auditors that may be lurking about ...

I have tried changing the right on vantage.vtg to read-only for everyone
except admins. Even changed the file properties to read-only. It still gets
overwritten. I usually just keep a copy of my vtg file called
vantageback.vtg and make a copy of it after I do a client install.

I need to ask a question of the people using Mike Podlin's Timeout utility.
I have the vantage.vtg file in the vantage folder on the vantage server set
to start Timeout. In the line that reads StartupProcedure=mainmenu.w ---
nstead of calling mainmenu.w, that line is changed per instructions to call
timeout.r. Every time I reboot the vantage server, this line changes back
to mainmenu.w, so the timeout utility doesn't run. Somehow the Vantage.vtg
file is being restored to its previous state. Does anyone using Timeout (or
Mike Podlin) know what this is and how to fix it? Is it possible that there
might be something going on with the mirroring?

Only thing I know of that re-writes the .VTG files is the client
setup. Your NT permissions should probably be set so the typical
workstation doesn't even have write access to them.

Wayne,

When I'm installing Vantage on a WS in W2K, since I need to have admin
rights for the install to work, I'll be getting those same rights on the
server too. And the install will overwrite the Vantage.vtg file. I suppose
I could disconnect the workstation from the network, use the CD (I install
currently using VantageClientSetup.exe from the Vantage dir) for the
install. Is there something I'm missing in all this?

Gary,
Like someone else said, the simplest thing to do is simply... after the client install, manually change the Vantage icons using the epic51\vantage\bitmap folder for a great selection. (You right-click the Vantage icon on your desktop, select properties, then select Change Icon. Now browse to the above folder.) You can give LIVE Vantage one icon, give Report Builder it's own special icon, and also do a different one for the Training Database.(The Icon with the Graduation Hhat is nice for the 'training' database).
I have found I prefer my own custom icons anyway so that I can find the Vantage icon on my cluttered desktop easier without having to read the little words underneath to see whether it's Report builder or Training database.

I've noticed the strange 'rotating icon' syndrome mostly on workstations that still have a previous Vantage version installed and drive still mapped.

Here are a couple of options for this:

1. Make your Vantage icons read-only
2. Create backup copies of the icons and then create a batch file to
overwrite them when you are done with a client install, something like this
should work...

a. @echo off
b. del vantage.vtg
c. copy vantage-backup.vtg vantage.vtg

Hope this stuff helps and have a happy 4th!

I have tried changing the right on vantage.vtg to read-only for everyone
except admins. Even changed the file properties to read-only. It still gets
overwritten. I usually just keep a copy of my vtg file called
vantageback.vtg and make a copy of it after I do a client install.

invoices to send we would like to print the invoices on Klant-ID
instead of invoicenumber. Is there a possibility???
