Various 8.03 questions

hey that just makes it more fun when you get the thing to work.

Its actually at least 2 or 3 documents that you have to put together using trial and error and then come up with your own document since most likeley you'll be doing this a few times at least.

Thank you for the help with the backup question yesterday. I hope you guys
don't mind me bombarding the group with Vantage 8.0x questions. We are
currently at version 6.1 but are on the way to 8.03. When I started out
with Argonics we implemented Vantage 4.0 and over the years I have done the
upgrades (v5.0, 5.1, 5.2, etc..) with little need for help outside of the
install docs. Times have changed and Vantage is a very different beast
now.

So far I have managed to get a test server up with 6.1 and 8.00.x and got my
data converted with what appears to be zero problems. The hitch I have had
at this point is that the test server won't launch Vantage 8.00.x because
(this is what Epicor support told me) I installed Progress 9.1d before
OpenEdge 10.0b and therefore the appserver is confused. The suggestion I
got was to build another test server and install a clean copy of Vantage
8.03 on it and then transfer the converted 8.00.x database I made on the
previous test server to this one and continue my upgrade. This is what I am
doing but have a couple questions:

1. On the epicor support site under downloads for Vantage there is the
following files:

SP803305p.EXE<https://epicweb.epicor.com/Support/VantageVista/Downloads/Vantage803/SP803305p.EXE.aspx>
Vantage
8.03.305 Service Pack for Progress/Linux/Unix
PA803305DP.EXE<https://epicweb.epicor.com/Support/VantageVista/Downloads/Vantage803/PA803305DP.EXE.aspx>
Vantage 8.03.305 Patch D for Progress/Linux/Unix

What is the difference between these files? What order should I be
installing them?

2. Where can I find some documentation on Sonic? What is it? How do I
properly set it up?

3. Is there any better documentation available on Installation and
Upgrading than what is available on the support site in the downloads area?

Thanks, Marc

My suggestions would be as follows:
Use the Install DVD and install in order as the menus indicate;
ie:
Install .Net 1.1
Install .Net 1.1 Service Pack
Install CR
Install Open Edge 10.0b
Install Open Edge 10.0b SP5

Now the fun starts:
Not enough info here to go on, Are you on a Server or Admin Station
either way there is docs (Install-MSG803-Progress.pdf)

I am using a Linux Server so everything for us was trial and error
and I mean lots of attempts (Doc's were *!#$^% to say the least)

We went in order of Service Packs and then Patches, not sure if you
can use SP305 first? but since SP304 does not seem to be on the
download site I must assume you would apply SP305 followed by the
patch for 305D.

We have not got into Sonic as of yet, again since this seems to need
a Win32 server running. Once Epicor can get all processes to run on a
Linux based server side app we will begin implementation of other
packages.

Last if you find GOOD documentation please let us all know....

Regards

-Joe

Marc,

1. The difference is the 305P.exe file is the main 8.03.300 level
patch for Progress and the 305DP.exe file is a "minor" patch revision
(D) that should be applied after you install the 305P file and do the
auto conversions through the admin tools.
2. I think Sonic is the Epicor "web server". I'm not a 100% sure.
3. Unfortunately, that's the only documentation you will find
helpful.

There was an issue installing the Progress 9.1d and OpenEdge on the same
server. You MUST change the port number on which Progress Explorer Tool
uses to manage the databases - by default PET uses the same management
port for both and can cause conflicts. There's a registry fix that, if I
can find it, I'll post - but regardless, I had Epicor Tech Support walk
me through the change the first time, so they *should* be able to help
you out.

Let me know if you need anything further.

Hi Marc
This is really strange for me to ask you Q's.
I am going to upgrade from vantage 6 to vantage 8 without any support from Epicor.
I need to know if you have used any scripts to transform data.
If you have installed your self or do you know the steps involved.please help me with them.
Thank you
Zuhiab

From memory: having both the progress 9 and open edge 10 services running at the same time causes some problems (at the very least the progress explorer tool gets confused) what I would do in a similar situation as you would be to not have the two services start by default, instead I would manually start only one when I needed them to still have both 9 and 10 installed on the same server.

I did this upgrade in a VM server as to not impact the live environment with a needless install of progress 9 on it.

there is documentation how to do the upgrade on epicor's website.
I bet that document is very completeÂ…

there is documentation how to do the upgrade on epicor's website.
We jumped from 5.0 to 8.404a. I have Progress 9.1a and 10.1b installed
on the same server. IIRC I had to change the port number on 10.1B to
20575 as it want to default to 20931 which was being used by 9.1a. I
normally have 9.1a stopped, but I have run both without a noticeable
performance difference.
