VB Form field cutting off in Crystal 8.5

I think it is just how crystal 8.5 handles the data. If you use crystal
9 it works fine.

else have any ideas why this field would be cut off to 256 in crystal

Is the field set to can grow on the formatting tab? When you browse on
the field is it a string type or Memo field?
Looking at the Crystal KB I found this related article not certain if
this pertains to Vantage DB?

If you right-click on the field, then select "Format Field...", is the "Can
Grow" check box blank? I think if you check it, the field can display all
contents.

Thank you. Yes, it is set to 'can grow' without any line limits.

I checked the 'browse' and it shows the fields as "string", length "254". I
read the article you attached (thanks again!) and it sounds like that's the
problem, although I have no idea how to fix it and it sounds like it might
only be fixable by vantage...

Actually Sarah, this is only fixable in Crystal with the next release.
Whatever version of Crystal that came out after 8.5 fixed this issue.
It's not a Vantage issue.

I sent this message out last week and also submitted it to vantage
tech
support the same day. I finally got a reply from tech support today
that
told me to check the properties in the data dictionary to make sure it
was
set to 1000 and if not they sent me instructions to increase it to
1000.
But, it was already set at x(1000) / width 2000. Does anybody else
have
any
ideas why this field would be cut off to 256 in crystal only?

We have a Character VB Form field in the OrderHed table set to 'any
character', length '999'. Vantage allows us to go in and type in this
many
characters in the field.



This field is also on our Sales order
acknowledgement form



in crystal but Crystal is cutting it off (only
displaying) 256 characters. Does anyone know why it would do this or
how
I
can fix it?

Thanks. I just figured since vantage crystal successfully displays lots of
other 'memo' data from vantage (like order comments) that there must be a
setting in vantage that could be switched on the vbform character fields so
they export the same way so crystal can read them as full memo fields...

Actually Sarah, this is only fixable in Crystal with the next release.
Whatever version of Crystal that came out after 8.5 fixed this issue.
It's not a Vantage issue.

Sarah,

I just duplicated your problem on my Sales Order Acknowledgement. I
had a character VB form field created on the Sales Order Header. It
was set to 15 characters and showed as such in Crystal. I changed
the field length to 999, ran another print preview in Vantage,
Verified the DB in Crystal and the field length changed to 254. It
must be a limit to what with the DBF files that are created when
printing the form can handle.

If support can't fix this for you... You might try adding the data
with a subreport and an ODBC connection instead of using the field
from the DBF file. Let me know if you need any pointers in doing
this, it has been a while for me, but I may be able to help you along.

The full memo will display if using ODBC, just not using the DBF's
that are created when printing a Crystal Form from withing Vantage.

Thank you! I have a question into tech support to see if it's possible to
change the setting that is causing this to be read by crystal as a string
instead of a memo like the comments field get read. I'm hoping (but not too
confident) that there is a setting I can change for the vb form fields so
they will be read by crystal like other vantage memo fields. I will also
look into the ODBC method - thank you for the feedback.

I just duplicated your problem on my Sales Order Acknowledgement. I
had a character VB form field created on the Sales Order Header. It
was set to 15 characters and showed as such in Crystal. I changed
the field length to 999, ran another print preview in Vantage,
Verified the DB in Crystal and the field length changed to 254. It
must be a limit to what with the DBF files that are created when
printing the form can handle.

If support can't fix this for you... You might try adding the data
with a subreport and an ODBC connection instead of using the field
from the DBF file. Let me know if you need any pointers in doing
this, it has been a while for me, but I may be able to help you along.

Hi Liz, yes and there are no limitations to the field set in crystal. I
just tried connecting to this table via ODBC and showing the character field
on the form in MS Access and access is cutting it off at 256 characters
also. So, it makes me think that it is some type of setting in vantage that
is not allowing it to display the full field - but I can type in and see all
the characters from within vantage, so I don't know where this could be set.
The directions tech support had sent me had me check "Options->Sql Field
Properties->Adjust Field Width" but it looked like was already set right.

The setting mine currently show are:
Under "Field Properties"
Format: X(1000)

Under 'Sql Properties->Adjust Field Width"
Width: 2000
Format: X(1000)

Does anybody know of another setting that would be limiting this?
