Vendor Groups

Thanks Butch. I will play around with that. Sounds like it will do
what I am wanting.

We're going to start to setup Vendor Groups and I'd appreciate any
suggestions, success stories, best practice guidelines, etc.

How did you setup your ID codes and descriptions? Random assignment or some
kind of intuitive pattern?
How detailed do you get? For example do you have an ID for platers or do you
have a separate ID for each type of plating (nickel, chrome, etc.)
Did you get too detailed and found it to be cumbersome/useless? Or, vice
versa, did you initially start off too general and ended up getting more
detailed?
What types of reports do you generate using vendor groups? We have a couple
of basic ones we want but I'm sure there are some creative ones out there
we haven't thought of but may find useful.

Any help or 'here's how we do it at our plant' ideas would be helpful as we
discuss how we want to go about setting ours up.

Nothing fancy here. We kept the groups at a fairly high level(welding, deburing, plating, etc..). We rarely use the codes themselves for anything and for the most part they are simple 2 digit numbers. The code field is 2 characters so if you were going to have any less than 10 be sure to prefix with a zero for sort considerations. I don't see much need for meaning in the code since it is virtually always selected from a drop down list. Make the lowest few codes the ones most often used to avoid scrolling. We set non production groups (government & utilities) with letters (like Z) so they would go to the end of the list. The only report that I've done is a simple vendor total payments in period with sub-totals for each group. Mainly so managment can decide if we should pull some outside operations in-house.

Appearantly, today is "User Group" day for me today.

Does anyone have a slick way of grouping vendors in more than one
group? We use a number of distributors provide a variety of
products. I would like to assign the vendors to a group instead of
a group to the vendor. Any ideas???

You could use the Attributes functionality to assign attributes to the
vendors, then group by the attributes in a custom report.

Butch
