Veritas Backup Exec on the Vantage server

We were on an earlier version of BE 11 but we had upgraded to version
11 Rev 7170 to fix the memory leak issue.

I run BE version 11 on our 803 Vantage server. Is anyone else doing
the same? Any concerns with the SQL Server that gets installed with
BE?

Ken,

What patch level of BE version 11 are you running and are you running
this on a 64 bit server? We had the same problem with every once in a
while after BE ran on our DB server Vantage would eventually crash.
There was a memory leak issue with an older patch level with BE 11.
The BE services would continue to grow in memory usage eventually
Vantage would stop responding. After we upgraded to the newer patch
the problem went away. Hope this helps...

What patch level are you on currently for BE? I'm running Vantage 6.0
on a 64bit server and using BE 11. I wonder if this is something I need
to keep an eye out for.

We have Symantec Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers, Rev 7170 with
Service Pack 1 on Windows Server 2003, 32-bit. I'm currently
downloading service pack 3 but after the last crash, I looked at
several server parameters and commit charge was fine, no excessive
memory usage.

I'll probably install SP3 just to stay current though.

My original issue, Vantage dB crashing (database process stopping
for no apparent reason) in the early mornings requiring a server
reboot, did not happen this morning. This issue is proving to be
very illusive. Can't pin it down to any one thing yet. Still
collecting clues.

Thanks,
Ken

I might have missed it in the topic thread messages but just for clarity sake....you are not backing up the actual db folder are you? This should never be done...instead backup the backup.1 file created by the database backup utility. Over the years this has come up form time to time where someone does not exclude the db folder from BE. Never touch the actual database files or it can cause a crash, not always but the risk is high. At least for Progress DBs. If you are SQL Server it might be different. Another thing to avoid would be virus scanning the db folder. If you have an overnight full scan scheduled that could do it too.

Correct. All the dB folders are excluded from the Symantec backup
routine. We use the mfgbkup utility to create the backup files that
are then picked up by the Symantec backup.

The instructor in the Admin class was very clear about the backup
and he gave us a list of exclusions for the AntiVirus but the db
folder wasn't in that list. I've excluded it from auto-protect
anyway. The chance of a virus targeting the Progress database files
is probably pretty remote.
