Version 6.0 Problem

I did the test upgrade to 5.2, it was the jump from 5.2 to 6.0 that was such
a pain. I had a server down in the middle of the process and couldn't test
the jump from 5.2 to 6.0. I especially like the "convenience" of the single
button database upgrade from 5.2 to 6.0. The part where you tell it to
upgrade and it stops with the warning that 6.0 already has a database in
place. I figured out quickly that it was the initial database and nothing
to worry about. Except at 11:00 pm I was not thinking clearly and used
progress explorer to blow away the mfgsys database group. When that didn't
work I deleted the actual database files and the upgrade ran fine. Of
course you can't start the new database without the mfrsys60 database in
progress explorer and I didn't know enough to recreate the entries. Shot an
entire evenings work and delayed the upgrade a day. I am sitting there with
a perfectly good database and no way to start it. The next night I get to
backup and convert the database all over again.

Especially the reference(s) to Vista. Also there are at least a couple
places where critical steps are omitted related to stopping or starting the
database services (or even waiting a sufficient amount of time before
proceeding to avoid certain error messages). All this makes a huge case for
doing a test upgrade well before doing it for real. -Todd C.

Just a heads up if you just went to 6.0 and kept 5.2 running. The program
groups in "Start, Programs,...." are different for 5.2 and 6.0. So if both
databases are running and your users switch back and forth from using the
desktop icons and the start, programs you could have a problem. The 6.0
program group will be at the bottom of the list and it is real easy to run
the old group by mistake. The splash screen is the same so if you are not
careful a user may not realize that they are in 5.2 and not 6.0.

I downloaded the latest upgrade instructions from web and I can't tell you
how many times the instructions didn't match what was on the screen. Cost
me several hours of work when I had to guess at 11:00 pm what I should do.
The program group issue is just another example. One of my engineers just
blew several days of work because he got into 5.2 by mistake. We went from
5.1 to 5.2 to 6.0 in a week of upgrades. I am real tired of getting bit on
the .... by poor documentation. Why would you name one program group
Vantage by Epicor and the other group Manufacturing by Epicor? Which one
would you run if you hadn't seen them before?

Does anyone actually try to follow their own instructions before they
release them to the unsuspecting public?

I agree with you on the documentation as well.

Here's a suggestion, unless you have a reason to run 5.2 as well as 6.0.

Just go to everyone's start menu and delete the 5.2 version. We do that
here just to prevent some yahoo from doing something like that. I never
expect my end users to pay attention to what they click on.

Another thing you can do is delete the Progress menu item as well. It
doesn't prevent them from running the database, just prevents the curious
end user who has nothing better to do from getting into stuff they shouldn't
be getting into.

Just my .02 cents

Subject: [Vantage] Version 6.0 Problem

Just a heads up if you just went to 6.0 and kept 5.2 running. The program
groups in "Start, Programs,...." are different for 5.2 and 6.0. So if
both
databases are running and your users switch back and forth from using the
desktop icons and the start, programs you could have a problem. The 6.0
program group will be at the bottom of the list and it is real easy to run
the old group by mistake.

We went
from
5.1 to 5.2 to 6.0 in a week of upgrades. I am real tired of getting bit
on
the .... by poor documentation. Why would you name one program group
Vantage by Epicor and the other group Manufacturing by Epicor? Which one
would you run if you hadn't seen them before?

Does anyone actually try to follow their own instructions before they
release them to the unsuspecting public?
