We have tested that you can add costs to a job after it has been shipped ... i.e., creation of packing slip moves cost from WIP to A/R clearing and Invoicing moves moves Cost from A/R clearing to Cost of Goods Sold.

Sometimes we have costs that need to be posted to the job after we invoice. The issue that I have seen is that the cost posted to the job after the job is invoiced gets hung up in WIP.

Does anyone have a solution to this? Or due to this fact, this requires you to complete/close the job at the time of invoicing. We would never want to add costs to a job that has been invoiced.

Curious what I need to do to upgrade from 5.2 to 6.1
Besides upgrade to 6.0 first
Do I have to change all my forms (that are customized) etc?
You will be changing forms and reports, but that will be
AFTER the upgrade.

Make sure you have all the patches necessary for 6.0 and 6.1

And depending on how big your database is, it can take one
solid day to convert. If it is under 1 GB then one solid
morning will be taken up.

Epicor did some really good directions. Just read them
ahead of time and everything should go well.

The file locations for Crystal based forms will have to be changed to point to the new work folder. Means running to preview in Vantage (using stock version with 6.1) then modifying your version (set location / verify DB) then saving as the standard name (after renaming stock version or better yet copying entire folder to a new subfolder - something like "Native61-Crystal".

I can recall but there might also be some field names that changed. Certainly RB will choke on expanded field sizes in several tables including Part but this can be ignored. Only occurs as a warning when editing report code. Also, every time I open an RB I must set the DB location the first time to point to mfgsys61. So now I have it prompt for DB location every time and "OK" it if it is already been set. Reports will run without setting but you can't edit them until it is set.

I have an old 5.2 to 6.1 checklist I'll send off-list. There are some steps the upgrade instructions are vague about or missing....like changing location references in the backup routines.

If you have time (who does?) I found it really helpful to make the
conversion on a test server and get my forms and reports updated before
going live. It is also good practice for when you do it for real. The
directions were good but I had a couple of questions that it was nice to get
answered without all of the users waiting for me to get the conversion
complete. The second time when I did it for real was very smooth as a
result.

Having a test implementation or pilot prior to launch is critical to make
sure you understand the instructions, and do not have any snags. So many
times the instructions are close. When we do they install we document

There are a lot of errors in the upgrade instructions that should be worked through in advance and corrected for the final upgrade. Like references to Vista! Also file paths that are for the wrong versions (mfgsys60 references in the 6.10 upgrade). You also need to find the places where you write your own instructions to fix bad file references in .ini type files - especially the data backup routines. Or at least there were when I upgraded. Perhaps they have been corrected.

Oh!! a biggy..I now recall. Depending on how you create your new database you may have critical settings far too low. I vaguely recall it is better to completely wipe out the empty database that gets created in mfgsys61/db, restore a backup to it then let then conversion process write over it. There was something about a -p parameter and -mm and.... I don't recall all of them but only 5 or so users could log in to the database before it got corrected (requiring a server reboot). The instructions I had did not address this at all. Did not show up in testing due to low number of users but was a really big deal for the 35 locked out users the day we went live.

Dear group,

We are struggling in the system implementation and
opening load!

Have anyone in the group experience Opening Job Load
into Vantage in the initial implementation stage?

Please correct me if i'm wrong, currently what we do
is to first load all Opening SO, PO, JO and then
catch-up the inventory transaction, goods receiving,
material issuing before move forward to backflush the
JO.

Please advise on the consequence!

Any prompt and sharing is much appreciated!

Selamat Petang!

It really depends on how you want to proceed as there are various flavors of implementing the Job Management part of Vantage.

One scenario would be to let old jobs die out using whatever system was currently in place and only input new jobs into Vantage at a specific point in time. Not the cleanest but it is a method that I've seen used with some success. The positive is that from a Vantage perspective this is simple to implement. And if I've learned anything over the years the simpler you keep it the easier it is to implement. The down side is that for the transition period you are using two systems. For a company with quick turn jobs this can be a viable option. But if your production jobs tend to span several months this transition period can seem to never end.

If you truly want to do an "Open Job Load" you could do the following.

Use the Job Adjustment program to enter Job Costs as of the cut off date. Enter the Open PO's as of the cutoff date linking any subcon PO releases to their appropriate jobs as well as linking any purchase direct PO releases to the appropriate material requirements. If you link sales orders to jobs you will need to enter the open sales orders. If you do not add parts to the part master (pure Job Shop environment) then you would need to enter the sales orders first then link the jobs. If you add parts to the part master (maybe Job Shop, maybe repeat order) you can link the job to the sales order after the jobs have been created.

This is just a very quick summary. There are lots of variables to consider and much would be dependent on your type of business and the end results desired. Bottom line is there are lots of ways to implement Vantage and no one way is the right way...just the right way for your specific business.

Feel free to contact me off list if you would like to discuss further. I've actually spent quite a bit of time on your side of the world as we have Vantage running in our plant in Singapore.

Semoga berjaya!
