Mercury Electronics has been considering virtualization for some time and,
now that Epicor is willing to support running Epicor 9 in a virtual
environment, this consideration has now become a full-blown project. Based
upon previous postings to the list, it is clear that some companies have
already implemented Epicor 9 in a virtualized environment. To the best of
my knowledge, only VMware vSphere and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization have
been mentioned as the virtualization technologies. We will be considering
both of those, but we will also be researching Microsofts Hyper-V
solution. If anyone on the list has implemented Hyper-V, we would certainly
like to hear about your experience with it. I think these would be
considered the big three, but information about any others (e.g. Citrix)
would also be helpful.

Alternatively you can look into the Linux package called Xen (not citrix) Not sure why they named it the same name as the citrix product. Or you can go with KVM and pick your own KVM management interface.

Scott,
If you have waited this long for virtualization because Epicor did not support it, you may consider going with their recommendation here too – looks like what they know and worked with is VMware!
BTW, we installed 8.03 4 years ago and always had it on a VMware cluster – never had any issues with Epicor that were caused by the environment.
Must say it has been a huge save of time for testing upgrades and re-creating test system from production.

Thank you Motty and Zac for the info.

Motty, I have just two points in reply. One, to clarify, weve been using
VMware Workstation for a while, but only in a limited manner to provide VMs
for testing (agree it has been very helpful for that purpose). But now,
were planning to go full-bore to virtualize all of our servers (three
Windows, one Linux), hence my original post. Two, in their recent webcast
regarding virtualized environments, Epicor seemed to present Hyper-V at
least as favorably as vSphere, perhaps even more so considering the cost.
Again, were just looking for feedback from users about their real-life
experiences.

Regards,
Scott

If you're not interested in HA (i.e. vMotion), you can pick up a
vSphere Essentials license (3 physical servers, 2 sockets each, up to 6
cores per socket, w/ a vSphere management console) for less than $1K.

You'll find lots more folks with VMware experience out there than
Hyper-V.

If you're not interested in HA (i.e. vMotion), you can pick up a
vSphere Essentials license (3 physical servers, 2 sockets each, up to 6
cores per socket, w/ a vSphere management console) for less than $1K.

You'll find lots more folks with VMware experience out there than
Hyper-V.

Thank you Motty and Zac for the info.

Motty, I have just two points in reply. One, to clarify, we've been
using
VMware Workstation for a while, but only in a limited manner to provide
VM's
for testing (agree it has been very helpful for that purpose). But now,
we're planning to go full-bore to virtualize all of our servers (three
Windows, one Linux), hence my original post. Two, in their recent
webcast
regarding virtualized environments, Epicor seemed to present Hyper-V at
least as favorably as vSphere, perhaps even more so considering the
cost.
Again, we're just looking for feedback from users about their real-life
experiences.

Regards,
Scott

Scott,
If you have waited this long for virtualization because Epicor did not
support it, you may consider going with their recommendation here too -
looks like what they know and worked with is VMware!
BTW, we installed 8.03 4 years ago and always had it on a VMware cluster
-
never had any issues with Epicor that were caused by the environment.
Must say it has been a huge save of time for testing upgrades and
re-creating test system from production.

Not sure why they named it the same name as the citrix product. Or you
can
go with KVM and pick your own KVM management interface.

My .02;

We are running E9 in VMWare Vsphere and it works fine for us. There are caveats, but I think there would be with any system.
VMWare has published a "Best Practices" paper on Epicor 9 with their test results, and Epicor has also three white papers on using VM
Ware. I don't think any other virtualization vendor has done that yet.

A lot of testing is recommended, but it is much easier in a virtual environment.

I would recommend, and so does Epicor, using Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, as it handles RAM better and allows scaling more RAM which I find that Epicor is RAM hungry in the VM Environment. I have 28GB of RAM currently, and I started with 16 and have kept pushing it up as demand required.

This group is invaluable for your testing so rely on the users here who have done it and can give real answers to what you will run into.

Good Luck!

Ok, I can't resist throwing at least one monkey wrench into the equation. For whatever reason when discussing virtualization options all of the options discussed are hardware virtualization (ie VMWare, Hyper-V, etc.). None are OS virtualization technologies like Solaris zones or, more appropriately to this forum, Parallels Virtuoso Containers. Virtuoso, for example, is wildly popular amongst ISP's for provisioning virtual private servers because OS virtualization doesn't require the resources of hardware virtualization and therefore more servers can be provisioned per host hardware. Additionally, because the hardware isn't virtualized, OS virtualization vastly outperforms hardware virtualization for production applications. The downside is that you can only run multiple instances of the host OS so you cannot run multiple OS's on the host hardware but, then again, how many production environments need multiple OS's?
