VMware Blank Title 97125

Based on my own experience, in general, VMs don't give great performance for
Epicor unless setup in a specific way.

Usually, for best performance the companies I have worked with had the best
performance when the VMs received their drivespace directly from the SAN
with its own dedicated disks versus putting the SAN in one giant virtual
disk and then letting all the data sit on a .vhd.

So dividing up the SAN to allow the VM to receive it's secondary, non-OS
drives just like a physical server is the best. It improves efficiency as
well as allowing for dedicated drives/spindles for Epicor to use directly.
Especially good for things with high disk I/O like MRP and users in excess
of 35-40, downside is it tends to take up a little more space because of how
it takes the disks away from other potential use. However, # of disks is
more important than size of the disks in general.

Putting all temp files, pagefiles, and documents & settings are best when
put on the same drives since being inside the VM and VHD affects it's
performance as well.

Good morning group,

We just started to look for a VMware/SAN system. Currently we are running
407 on Progress OpenEdge (Win 2003). We also have Exchange 2007 on a win2008
box. The plan is to use VMware to cover both applications. Any information,
suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

We run our Epicor server on VMWare ESX 3.5
The physical machine is 2 sckets cuad cores
32 gigs of ram
and SSD Raid 10

It runs fine we have had no problems with it.

So you are not using a SAN, just a server running VMware? What is the size of your SSD. After the raid?

We've been running VMware/SAN for 2 years now, no
problems. We deploy Vantage 8.03.xxx with
Thinstall via policy and although it needs
precise setup to create the package, it makes
patch upgrades a heck of a lot easier. Same
deployment with BarTender although we didn't integrate the two.

Currently experimenting with a 9.04/05 conversion in a "bubble".

We were running 9.05.600B on a VMWare environment, but we saw such horrible performance that we moved to physical servers. Once we made the move, performance was greatly enhanced. We do not plan to use VMWare at all in the future for our production environment.

We tried running in VM ware when we went live on 8.03.407. I agree with Lauren,
it was SLOW. Also, Epicor has limited knowledge of this and was little help (at
least they were in 2009). We moved to physical Servers and have had better
performance ever since. We do have a comletely isolated "sandbox" environment
for testing that runs in vmWare - now on 8.03.409c. We love it for testing,
and the ease of createing a snapshot of the VM environment before running tests
so we can easily roll-back.

We use Hyper-V for our virtual servers. It comes with Windows Server 2008. The Hyper-V Management Console allows you to copy VMs, take snapshots...etc. It has been very reliable for multiple application and database servers. You just need to setup your virtual NICs and you are ready to go.
