Got ya beat by 5 years. I guess I should be thankful…I can still remember these things at my age.
Back to the original topic - RadioShack was the to-go store for gadgetry. Only other one I can think of was Heathkit. After that I think it was either mail-order or maybe a local place if you were lucky.

I still have a RS nearby- I’m quite chummy with the GM. Couple of Heathkit kits in my past as well
