Warehouse scanning functionality

Hi

So we are now upgrading to Epicor 9 and we will start using the handhelds
We bought CK3 from intermac

I was wondering if anyone can guide me how the handhelds connect with epicor and how they are set up?
Does it work direct connection or terminal server? how do you make sure the screen aligns?

Does anyone have a guide documentation? or if anyone would be so kind to contact me offline and help me?

thanks

Hi group,

We have vista installed for close to 3 years and we want to take it to next level of handling inventory.

We want all inventory transactions be done with a handheld scanner.

We labeled our inventory with part # as barcodes and we would like to use a scanner for inventory count and also for picking bom based on job traveler and it should issue the material in vista based on the scanning.
Also receiving should be done with scanning.
We contacted our epicor consultant and this is what he replied
"Vista shop floor functionality doesn’t allow for inventory transactions such as qty adjustments and physical counts and transfer, this is available with Epicor 9.0 , with your current version (8.03.408) you can ship & receive & receive finish parts from jobs."

When we spoke to another consultant he said that we could use it for all inventory transaction.

So now I am wondering what's the reality?

Also I would like to know is anyone using this type of functionality and what do they recommend for the handheld and for the process in general.

We only use scanners for entering tracking numbers on shipments and we haven't started using MES or the HH software yet, but here is what I know.

The handheld software is pretty limited, so your consultant may have been referring to this. I'm not sure about MES. What we plan to do is to use ultra portable PCs with wireless and scanners to run Vantage 8.03 for inventory transfers, cycle counts, and qty adjustments. You can also purchase handheld scanners that run Citrix and you can run Vantage that way.

The handhelds that I’ve seen use the screens that are set up in the data collection -> Handheld -> Handheld Menu. These are fully customizable just like everything else. I think the handhelds use windows mobile.

We use Dell tablets with a reader pen and a full seat of Vantage 8.03.408B.

We initially tried the handhelds and spent a ton
of money on both the devices and the advanced
Vantage modules to get the devices to have any functionality.

The hand held project was a total waste of
money....we will continue to invest in the
tablets for portable Vantage use. The cost of
the extra licenses is offset by the cost of the
advanced-whatever modules and the cost of the devices.

We purchased a Samsung Q1 Ultra for testing, which is a small 7" touch screen pc running Windows Vista and has built in WiFi. We install a full version of Vantage on it and hook up a Symbol scanner to it. It makes for a nice, if not a little pricey mobil scanning station. You can also hook up a full size monitor and keyboard to it.

Could you please elaborate a bit on what you suggested with ultra portable pcs and scanners?

We only use scanners for entering tracking numbers on shipments and we haven't started using MES or the HH software yet, but here is what I know.

The handheld software is pretty limited, so your consultant may have been referring to this. I'm not sure about MES. What we plan to do is to use ultra portable PCs with wireless and scanners to run Vantage 8.03 for inventory transfers, cycle counts, and qty adjustments. You can also purchase handheld scanners that run Citrix and you can run Vantage that way.

We contacted our epicor consultant and this is what he repliedÂ
"Vista shop floor functionality doesn’t allow for inventory transactions such as qty adjustments and physical counts and transfer, this is available with Epicor 9.0 , with your current version (8.03.408) you can ship & receive & receive finish parts from jobs."

When we spoke to another consultant he said that we could use it for all inventory transaction.

So now I am wondering what's the reality?

Also I would like to know is anyone using this type of functionality and what do they recommend for the handheld and for the process in general.

Before you buy *anything*, I would strongly urge you to go to have a Epicor rep take you over to another Vantage shop that is using handhelds and watch how they work.
Be very sure your expectations match what the Handheld is capable of. Have a list of what you want to do and have them show you, in a real life working environment, how each of the transactions works.

Hi Robert,

Since we wouldn't want to waste money (who wants beside the gov't) I would appreciate if you could explain what went wrong with the handheld project.
The reason we want to use the handheld is that its easier for the pickers to carry around and a more simple screen for them.
But obviously if it won't work I would spend the time and effort to train them and also create customization to simplify the screens to be able to use scanners without having to use the keyboard.

If you want you can contact me offline ephraimf@... or here online.

Thanks so much

I can't speak for what's possible in Vista as were a Vantage 8.03 user.
We do however use a Symbol wireless network throughout the shop (2 years
now, haven't had one issue to date). For our handhelds we use Symbol
Technologies MC9090 barcode scanner (with windows mobile 5.0 - I can't
wait for the mobile 7 version so we get Zune with it!). Currently we
are using our hand helds to receipt materials to stock (from jobs and
shipping), processing material queues, and pulling materials, inventory,
and WIP for jobs. On the immediate horizon will be packout
functionality for shipping.

I'm not sure why he said you can't do the inventory transactions listed below. They all exist in 8.

We've been using the handhelds for 3 years and really like them. We do material issuing, receiving, clocking in/jobbing in.

Receiving is a pain for PO's with a lot of lines, otherwise things work with little issue.

Does anyone know if you can receive containers using the handhelds? We put everyhitng in containers, if it comes from overseas. Helps us track landed cost and freight forwarder info, plus separates the supplier performance from the shipping performance.
Thanks!

The problem with this is the portability since its much easier to carry a scanner than have a portable pc + a scanner

Hi Rob

So you use the Vantage modules for handhelds succesfully?
Are the options available on the handheld available for all inventory transactions like inventory transfer or issue material to job?

For 99% they are the same.

We started on Vista (with handhelds). As our company grew, we needed multi-plant capabilities so we upgraded to Vantage. This was a serial number change and 99% of functions remained the same.

All you're asking works the same for both as far as I've noticed.

I agree, but it is cheaper then a scanner with Windows Mobil built in. And the ultra portable PCs are pretty small. And one additional benefit is with a docking station, you portable PC becomes a workstation.

Â
The problem with this is the portability since its much easier to carry a scanner than have a portable pc + a scanner
