Not true... WSE will work comfortably in VS2010 / .net 4.0... 3.0/3.5 are only extensions to 2.0. It is a matter of how you create the pages in VS using the wizards. It will try to push you in the WCF path.

All,

We are finally installing our test environment for 9.05... my IT director is asking me about WSE vs WCF and im like WTF? Not very familiar with those concepts, the destructions say we can continue with WSE but should I consider converting to WCF? What is the difference between the two? If I don't convert, what opportunities or functionality am I giving up? Thanks in advance for your input.

WCF t is the new stuff that M$ has been pushing for a while now, its easier
to setup and "faster"... If you already have WSE applications i'd let it
be, but eventually it will be phased out.

Go WCF.
WSE is old and supported for compatibility purposes.

The others are correct about WCF being the new MS route of preference. I have used both and kind of prefer the older WSE. However, sooner or later MS has threatened to drop this support. WCF does have options for "better" performance, but you will need to stay in an MS environment to see this increase and spend sometime tuning. If you are connecting to platforms (ie LAMP/PHP/JAVA) other than MS I would never consider WCF.

Also, since we have started using Epicor I have found the Epicor WCF/E services painfully slow, plus licensing model is not real clear either. Direct reference to the BO gives the best performance so we wrap them in our own 'tuned service'.

I went through the very same question you are asking. You can actually install and use both, but as the others have said, WCF is the way to go if you are starting fresh. I believe there is also a framework limitation with WSE. I think 2.0 is the highest it will support.
