What do others use for labeling?

Check to see if magnification is turned on under Display.

Windows 7 calls it "Make text and other items larger or smaller"

Make sure this is set to 100%.

Every laptop we get has been set to 125% causing errors when opening the
screen.

Similar solution for XP, but has two places to set to "Normal".

Hi All,

We've been using make-shift solutions for labeling but our customers
continue to demand more.

It's time for us to move to a "real" labeling solution like Bartender.

It looks like Epicor has some kind of interface with Bartender but I
wanted to see what others are using.

Other than all the standard functionality that you'd expect in a
labeling software, the only other real technical requirement we'd like
is to be able to have labels automatically print out when certain events
happen in Epicor.

Is Bartender the way to go or is there another/better software out there
that you'd recommend?

Bartender is great, but it can get really expensive in the licensing.
It's based on number of printers printed to, but the catch is that it
issues licensing based on hostname. For example if one user prints to it
via a print server say \\printserv\hp1080 <file:///\\printserv\hp1080>
and then epicor prints to it directly (the best way to go vs UNC) by ip
address \\192.0.0.25\ <file:///\\192.0.0.25\> it will absorb two licenses
even though it's one physical printer. So you have to think pretty hard
about how and when bartender will be printing. Reprinting labels is
inevitable which is triggered from some ones local machine.

The other hitch is you can really only print one label format at a time.
Example being we have different customers that require custom label
formats per customer. Impossible to do this just between Epicor and
Bartender. You have to have some middleware that can determine which
label format needs to be used. I for example have a UD field attached to
parts that specify the filename of the label format to use for that part
specifically. After the bartender file leaves Epicor and is created a VB
script picks that file up find the UD field and replaced the header of the
bartender file (this tells bartender which format to use) and then sends
the newly saved file to bartender. A mouth full I know...

Aside from that I fully would recommend bartender. The program is super
easy to use.

We've been using LabelMatrix for about 15 years as our label software
since each customer has different label designs and requirements, I
needed something that was command line based which allowed me to pass
data from a Vantage VB form to a CSV file and execute the command line
to have the labels printed out.

We use Crystal Reports for all of our labeling needs.
I still don't 'get' Bartender and other 'special' labeling software. Everything we've (this company and prior employee) needed to do with label printing we could do with Crystal.

The greatest benefit I have found with it is the ancillary features of
bartender. Maestro, History, Reprint console, along with its creation
flexibility (My users can create labels. I would blow my brains out trying
to get them to do it in crystal). All of those have been invaluable to
our operation. Of course with something like APM and crystal you could
achieve the same effect, but it's certainly not as well put together.
Everyone has different needs ;)
