Rob -
Guessing by your tone, I've probably asked how to do something that I
thought would solve some other problem. So I'll take a step back and
explain my 'original' problem, and what I was hoping to do about it.
Original Problem
================
Accounting is going crazy because $$$ are left in WIP, because we
often ship a Job before the materials are issued to it. And we were
never closing/completing jobs.
Doing it 'out of order' leads to the following inventory related GL
transactions:
1. Job 123 is shipped, $$$ in WIP moved to A/R clearing. Because the
$$$ in WIP for job 123 are zero at the time the shipment is made,
nothing gets moved to A/R Clearing
2. Invoice created, $$$ in A/R Clearing moved to Cost of Sales. Agin
the $$$ associated with job 123 are zero.
3. Material issued to job 123, $$$ in Inventory moved to WIP. Now WIP
has $$$ associated with job 123.
4. Close Job 123, $$$ in WIP related to job 123 'purged' to COS. But
if we don't close the job, the $$$ in WIP are 'orphaned' and
accounting has to make GL Entries to move the orphaned $$$ from WIP
to COS.
From your statement, "Why are trying to Close a make-direct job still
linked to a (presumably unshipped and invoiced) sales line/release?",
I assume that the Shipping and Invoicing processes should handle the
orphaned WIP, withou the need to close/complete the job.

order/line/release, (this will make the job qty go to zero so re-
enter the original job qty as a make to stock qty), and change the
sales order/line/release so it is no longer Make Direct.
