Not sure if this will help or not and I can't think of any of out parts off hand that have repeating lower level parts, but have you looked at the BOM Listing under Engineering reports? You can select a production quantity when you select a part and it will multiply out the quantities of all levels if you choose Indented Level. As I said I don't know if it would group everything under part number or if you'd be stuck adding manually to get part totals which I assume is what you're trying to get away from. Just thought I'd mention it in case it would be an option.
