Which Bar code reader to buy

We recently bought a few of the Imageteam 5800's. Correct me if I am
wrong, but I think the difference (vs. the 3800) lies in durability
and range - the 5800 is a bit more rugged and has a read range of 40.
5" vs 8". At least that is what our sales rep told us.

So far, the gun reads everything I throw at it (once formatted
properly)...laser printed bar codes all the way to the bar code on a
pen or can of pepsi.

I haven't put them on the floor yet. Hopefully later this month.

GL,

Kelly

Ditto on the WelchAllyn ImageTeam 3800. Very rugged, dependable and pretty much plug & play. Just plug in-line on the keyboard plug.

Babette,

Defining handheld might be key here. I really like the relatively
inexpensive Metrologic Voyager scanners we purchased recently. They are
tethered with a USB cable and function in a stand as a proximity reader,
and out of the stand as a "trigger" (or button on top in this case)
handheld scanner. The shop likes using them as proximity scanners most
of the time in the stand. The others that I have are Worth Data
scanners. They are great for the "extended keys" like <alt>. I would
caution you though to stick to a laser scanner vs. a CCD. We have one
CCD. The CCD is slower and less tolerant of compressed barcodes.

Hope this helps,
