Which RAID?

If you REALLY don't care about the cost, I would suggest a server dedicated
to Vantage alone.

If you can only deal with the drives at this point, mirroring (RAID1?) will
prevent loss due to a drive failure. If you add striping (RAID0?) to this,
it will improve performance. Striping will not protect you from a drive
failure. If you still have money after this, you can also add a separate
controller for each side of the mirror.

Just remember that Progress does not support RAID5. Actually, Progress can't
see what drive arrangement you are using, but the way RAID5 works exposes a
potential to corrupt your database in certain circumstances.

I have a question for the group.

I wish to upgrade our Vantage server's capacity. This server, at the
moment, also handles our e-mail, PDC & file & print (through Small Business
Server).

Here's the scenario: I don't mind re-installing everything back on to the
server and replacing the old 9Gb hard disks if it would prove beneficial. I
also don't care about the cost.

So, which RAID option is best?

Thanks in advance for your help.

For max speed and reliability I have two Adaptec scsi ultra wide-2 controller cards and two scsi 18 gig hard drives. Total usable space is 18 gig, but both controllers and both hard drives are always on. I recommend min 7200 rpm, prefer 10,000 rpm drives.
Technically this is mirroring (raid 0 or 1-I forget which number).

For all kinds of techno-info go to seagate.com and adaptec.com and look up their white papers on scsi and raid.

Good luck

Mirror your drives for best performance. Raid-5 only if you are trying to
radically save money.

Our RAID 5 Setup works pretty good, not that we've actually needed it yet.
Basically, you have two mirrored drives, and one parity drive, and one
online hot spare so if any 3 goes out. What you end up with is the capacity
of two of the drives (they all have to be the same size).

There are advantages and disadvantages of the various RAID levels (0 thru
5), explained at

Since Progress (bless their pea-pickin' little hearts) only supports RAID
level 0,1 which is mirrored AND duplexed, then that is what I'd strive
for. I had already configured my "new" server with level 5, PER EPICOR'S
instructions for Vantage V2. I went livid when I found out that V3 required
level 0,1. HD capacity plummeted from 36gb to 18gb mirrored/duplexed & a
"spare" 9gb online with no raid level at all. Since V4 requires
multiple-volume availability (yes, once again in order to avoid performance
issues), then this is your chance to cram FOUR of those new 18gb into that
server. I can't fault Progress for demanding the biggest and the best for
their platform, but sometimes it runs into a little cache-oops-cash. The
up side is that if you go with high-enough capacity drives (I do believe
36gb/12,500rpm [or better] are already available), then you get lower
response times for ANYTHING you store on those (0,1) partitions.

Forewarned is forearmed.
