Windows 2000 Server Offline

One way to avoid hdd problems is to power off the server for 30 seconds,
power back up, power off for aprox. 1 min. then power off again. This
allows the hdd's to go to their "home" position, which can become dirty
causing the armature to stick when powered and cooled off.

Jasper,

I know of no reason why you can't shut down the operating system for 14
days.

The hard drives are another matter. Server hard drives are typically
"On"
for months/years at a time. When you turn them off and let them cool
down you run a small risk of the drives not starting back up.

Call me paranoid but once I spin up hard drives in servers I do my best
to never shut them down for more than a few minutes at a time. I've
actually seen older IBM mid-range/mainframe type drives seize up when
shut down after a long period of run time. And yes, I know these newer
3.5" HDA drives are bullet proof and never ever fail .... and yet, I
still retain that old
paranoia. Probably the same paranoia that keeps me backing up systems
to
tape every night - just in case.

Does anybody know if there is a maximum time frame for Windows 2000
server to be offline? We want to shut down our Vantage server for the
Holiday season but I'm unsure if the Domain Controller may consider that
server invalid if it's off the network for so long. (14 days)

Thanks,
Jasper

Jasper,

Workstations and servers that belong to an NT domain use a secure channel to authenticate to the domain (machine authentication, not user authentication). Each machine has a token or password that is automatically changed via the secure channel. The interval between password changes can be as short as 7 to 10 days, sometimes longer, as far as I can remember. If the machine is disconnected for longer than the password change interval, it will be unable to logon to the domain when reconnected. What you'll need to do then is remove it from the domain (at the PDC and locally), then rejoin the domain.

Todd makes a good point also.

have fun,
john
