Epicor's official statement is that they do not support ME with Vantage because it is not a robust business operating system. We feebly tried it on one ME machine, and ended up reformatting and putting Win95 on it - which is our current policy if we get a machine with ME on it. We are looking into upgrading all our workstations to Win2000Pro (or XP Pro??).

I did hear (I think) of someone getting ME to work with Vantage.

This may have been discussed before but I will ask anyways. Has anyone set
up Vantage 5.00. with Win ME. I have new machines that have ME on them and
I am getting a service pack error when I am doing the client install. It
indicates that I don't meet the service pack 1 requirements. Is there a
work around or I S.O.L on giving these new machines to Vantage Users. Is
there even a service pack 1 out there yet!!!!

Yes, You can't run Vantage on Windows ME. Epicor doesn't support it, and we've tried and can't get it to work either. We ended up installing Win95 on the new ME computers we've received.

MS-ME is designed for "Home" use. We have had nothing but trouble trying
to configure ME machines for RAS dial up. MS has gone so far as to tell us
that we should JUST go buy W2K-Pro and install it if we want to be part of
our network.

I completely agree!!! The owner has a ME at home and I have had to go to her house and configure her computer twice now because ME doesn't like certain software and it's simply a pain in the "yahoo"! I would definately not recommend it for business/network use!!

i have Windows 98 SE (second edition) on my workstation which has only one
problem- it will not generate financial statements out of vantage 4.00.904.
i have a second workstation in my office that has Win 98 (first edition from
november 1998) that runs statements and everything else just fine (i use it
for my test database simulations too). i guess it was a year ago when i got
my new 'SE' workstation and at that time epicor told me this was a known
issue with that version of vantage and 'SE'. anyone know if that has been
fixed? we're upgrading to v5 next month, maybe that'll do the trick. (?)

Subject: [Vantage] Windows ME

This may have been discussed before but I will ask anyways. Has anyone
set
up Vantage 5.00. with Win ME. I have new machines that have ME on them
and
I am getting a service pack error when I am doing the client install. It
indicates that I don't meet the service pack 1 requirements. Is there a
work around or I S.O.L on giving these new machines to Vantage Users.
Is
there even a service pack 1 out there yet!!!!

Jason,

We have now run into 3 machines running ME. All of which were purchased by
employees who then wanted to dial into our network so they could access
email, files, and also run PcAnywhere to their desktops.

The first time my Network Tech and I just thought we were STUPID because we
could not get ME to authenticate to the network. The second time we figured
we were just in the wrong business. The third time we called MS to find out
what the heck we were missing. ( Ok, so we're a little slow ... )

Bottom line - MS tech support told us that ME is not a VALID client for a NT
or W2K server network. The same holds true for the XP-Home operating
system. MS considers these "Home" based operating systems and will NOT work
as clients for corporate networks. MS's suggestion ? The company should
purchase Win-2000-Pro or XP-Pro and install them on these PC's. When I
pointed out that the PC's don't belong to the company and that installing a
different operating system might make getting support from the PC vendor
"Difficult" ... they agreed.

Ugh.

So, for your corporate PC's and for employees who want to dial in from home
the "Valid" operating systems are - DOS, W95, W98, W98-SE, NT-WS,
Win-2000-Pro, Win-XP-Pro. Avoid ME and Win-XP-Home at ALL costs.

Technically speaking - ME and XP-Home CAN dial into a RAS modem. They will
connect just fine. They just can't access your servers. They can, however,
use PcAnywhere to dial a desktop PC. So one solution is to have some
desktop PC's that are valid network clients that home based employees can
PcAnywhere into in order to access email and files.

Do I consider this an incredibly stupid move by MS ? Yup ...

Todd,

So far so good with the ME. I got it to talk to the network pretty easily
and I install Vantage 5 with the help of the registry edit. I also have
AutoCAD 2002 running. Currently I am running a stress test on the machine
to determine if it will fail or get any corruptions. Its been running for
about 30mins and everthing is working great. Hopefully everything stays in
tact because I like the look and the quickness of the product. Side note: I
am also running Office XP. I don't see alot different there. Hey when you
jump you better jump high.
