XP Pro vs Win2000pro

No they are selling us OEM version (and giving us the OEM packet with license/disk etc..) but installing Win2K at our request. So these would be OK but new machines are rare lately and I have yet to upgrade the other 40 or so existing Win98 PCs and these WILL be retail XP purchases with Win2K install/upgrade. But I suppose I could use one of the "new PC" OEM packs to do the "upgrades" if I scrub disk and new-install on each PC.

Todd,

Your PC maker is installing retail copies of XP? Neither MOLP, SA or
OEM copies require you to deal with the licensing wizard. Time to find
yourself a respectable vendor!

have fun,

I tried to search on this because I'm sure there is some past
reference on this, must not be asking correctly though. We have all
(50) Win98 workstations, except for 2-Win2000 notebooks. We are
about to purchase 3 new Engineering workstations and I need to decide
whether Win2000 workstation or XP Pro would work best. We have been
notified that CADKEY has filed for Chapter 11 and is in the process
of being acquired. We are looking into using SolidWorks for our CAD,
but we will need to purchase new workstations (500 mhz with 192 mb
RAM is the best we have!) We have a NT4 and a Novell 5.1 server. We
primarily use MS Office 97, Vantage 5.0 on the workstations. Anyone
with pros and cons on XP pro and Win2000 would be greatly
appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

P.S. To other CAD users thinking of changing to Solidworks: I talked
to a Matt Brubaker at Corporate Software Solutions, and they are
having a special migration option to upgrade from CADKEY to
SolidWorks - thru the month of Septemher only. Our main customer
uses this software so we plan to go to it regardless so that we will
not have to redraw prints. We had just got pricing elsewhere so we
can see that these prices are truely exceptional. Matt's phone is

With the mixed server environment you might want to go with the WIN2000.
I had the same server environment until lately and I had lots of
problems with my XP box. I got tired of messing with it and reformatted
the workstation with WIN2000. My troubles went away.

With the exception of the Novell box your network is similar to mineÂ…right
on the cutting edge of technology. :-) I have both 2000 and XP boxes
installed and slowly but surely Win 98 and 95 are being phased out. There
is no company policy dictating this but I hate the support for these
operating systems so IÂ’m getting them out. That said both my 2000 and XP
boxes have run like champs with zero complaints. I canÂ’t believe the
difference in these operating systems even from NT workstation 4. The users
on these OSs just about forget my extension, which is ok with me. :-) IÂ’ll
keep going with XP simply because it is the current version but I canÂ’t
complain about either one.

We too have been adding Win 2000 Pro and Win XP Pro to our network. I find
that Win2000 and XP are equally as good (and much better than Win98/95). I
had a problem with the XP logon screen and the look and feel from a user
standpoint. With minimal work I figured out how to make XP look just like
2000. The only problem I have found is browsing the network is not as good
with XP. I did discover that adding the Netbeui protocol correctted that
problem. All new PC purchases are going to be with XP. Vantage has way
less lockups with XP and 2000...basically no lockups at all on version 5.2

We had some printing and Vantage crashing problems with XP Pro in our A/R
department. We learned that even giving the person an "Administrative"
previlages didn't help to resolve the crash problem. Finally we gave them a
Win 2K box which works fine.

I have almost all my desktops to XP Pro now. I only have one NT and about
five 2000 boxes. All of my Solidworks users are XP and I have not had any
problems at all. One box has Solidworks, Camworks, Esprit, and PTC installed
and working fine. I do recommend a fast cpu with lots of Memory and an
excellent video card.
As others have said, XP has been very stable here. The help calls are less
with it than they were with other OS.

My vote would be for Win-2000 over XP.

I have several PC's that I have converted from XP back to 2000 due to odd
behavior. In every case the driver and software issues under XP totally
disappeared under 2000.

I'd say that in 2 years XP will probably be as stable as 2000 is now ... but
not now.

If you want to bleed a bit go with XP, if you want do the Maytag repair man
thing ... go with 2000.

You know, I wasn't going to mention anything, cause from my viewpoint
everyone has their own OS preferences, which is fine by me, I still know
people who prefer Windows 95; however, as I read Jim's email, I will have to
side with him.

We have over 60 computers here ... NT 4 Servers (PDC and BDC) a Windows 2000
Server (stand alone on network) and a LARGE mix of 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000, and
XP machines here with HP printers, Epson printers, apple computers, etc. We
also run Solidworks here, as well as Teksoft, ProEngineer, of course
Vantage, Office 97, 2000, and XP, Norton Antivirus, plus many more, and to
this date, we have not ran into 1 single problem with Windows XP.

In fact, in my experience XP tend to operate MUCH faster than 2000 and NT
4.0.

We run a standard TCP-IP (DHCP Enabled via NT 4.0) network here and as soon
as I upgraded our Engineers to Windows XP (Full CLEAN install WITH SERVICE
PACK 1) they have responded to me that their systems run much faster and
have had far less crashes (esp in the graphics arena). This includes one
Engineer who was running Windows 2000 for over a year on a Pentium III
system with around 1024 MB RAM.

So, cons of XP ... I don't like the pretty interface as much, which can
easily be disabled to make XP look like Windows 2000, But other than that XP
in my mind seems to operate just perfect.

Windows 2000, there aren't really many cons that I can think about either
besides the fact that it does seem to operate slower. Also seems to be more
incompatibility issues with 2000 ... Although the funny thing is that
Windows 2000 and Windows XP are essentially the exact same operating
(Windows NT 5.0 and Windows NT 5.1) All that XP is is a point release of
Windows 2000, they just changed the name.

And then again, NT 4.0 still has some nice things that I still tend to
prefer over the "newer way of doing things" (i.e. Network Neighborhood)

But, all in all, just my two cents.

... Now im broke.

The
help calls are less with it than they were with other OS.

I tried to search on this because I'm sure there is some past reference on
this, must not be asking correctly though. We have all
(50) Win98 workstations, except for 2-Win2000 notebooks. We are about to
purchase 3 new Engineering workstations and I need to decide whether Win2000
workstation or XP Pro would work best. We have been notified that CADKEY
has filed for Chapter 11 and is in the process of being acquired. We are
looking into using SolidWorks for our CAD, but we will need to purchase new
workstations (500 mhz with 192 mb RAM is the best we have!) We have a NT4
and a Novell 5.1 server. We primarily use MS Office 97, Vantage 5.0 on the
workstations. Anyone with pros and cons on XP pro and Win2000 would be
greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance. Ann Rohyans, Network/Desktop

P.S. To other CAD users thinking of changing to Solidworks: I talked to a
Matt Brubaker at Corporate Software Solutions, and they are having a special
migration option to upgrade from CADKEY to SolidWorks - thru the month of
Septemher only. Our main customer uses this software so we plan to go to it
regardless so that we will not have to redraw prints. We had just got
pricing elsewhere so we can see that these prices are truely exceptional.

Whole network is W2K. XP seems like a load of problems, judging from what I
have read in the group here. I have XP Pro at home and do not like it as
much as W2K, but the software I run there requires XP, or I'd have W2K there
too. I keep waiting for someone to come up with a compelling reason to move
the network workstations up to XP - haven't heard one yet.

My 2 cents.

To be frank, this is probably due more to the average skill level on this
list than any deficiency in the OS. Many people here pull double-duty,
computer support is a distant second and they really don't have the time to
become OS experts.

Case in point: "when we removed XP and installed 2K, all our printer
problems went away". Conclusion: XP bad, 2K good? Probably not, although
that has been implied. More likely inappropriate or old drivers. How many
people here understand the interaction between the client's print spooler
and the print server's drivers when using shared printers?

> I keep waiting for someone to come up with a

How about these:

Driver rollback
Advanced System Restore
Improved wireless support
Multiple network support
More security options
Software restriction policies
Easier EFS integration between the client and the domain
More local/group policy management options
Improved stability and performance

We run about 60% XP Pro, 35% 2K Pro, and 5% NT4. Applications include
Office 2K or XP, Pro/E, SolidWorks, AutoCAD and Vantage 5.1 among others.
We have above-average client stability - the key is configuration control.
Until you can achieve it, life is miserable.

have fun,

Ann,

I work in pretty much the same environment. EXCEPT: all but two of the 9x
stations DO NOT USE the Netware server. We added 8 XP Pro 3ghz machines
(for use with SolidWorks) which replaced our aging p700's (which were on
NT). We are down to 5 2Kpro stations. When XP got dropped into the mix,
we started having browser speed issues, most of which were resolved with MS
and Vantage One-List tweaks. Personally, I prefer XP-there are fewer
PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair) problems, fewer phone
calls to my desk. 2Kpro is more stable as OS's go, compared to NT, but XP
is even more so.

John,

Are you a system administrator? Or a consultant? Sounds like you do have
the configs under control. I haven't been able to get XP to work as fast as
W2K. No time to figure it out either. The virus watch lately is killing
me. Those are good reasons you offered to upgrade. If I had the time to
even use any of those features, I would look into upgrading. Right now I'm
too caught up chasing my own tail to worry about anything else.

John,

"More likely inappropriate or old drivers" ... In my case I downloaded the
LATEST drivers for a Sony picture printer, a new HP all in one
printer/scanner/copier, a Sony PDA interface, and a few other toys.
NOTHING but trouble.

On the other hand the Win-2000 printer drivers under Win-2000-Pro worked
flawlessly, even on hardware that has only been sold for less then 1 year.

Like any MS product that is fairly new if you use main stream hardware they
work fairly well. It's the odd duck hardware and software that will drive
you insane.

Installing and configuring a desktop operating system should not require ZEN
skills.

Hence my vote against XP-Pro at the moment.

Gary,

Tech for 5 years, IT consultant for 10 years, full-time IT Mgr for the
last 5 years.

As far as the virus watch goes, you can ease your burden tremendously by
doing two things: 1) proxying firewall or SMTP proxy at the edge of
your network that will strip harmful attachments (or use one of the many
Exchange plugins) such as EXEs, scripts, etc 2) enterprise-style
anti-virus with a server that updates itself daily and pushes
definitions to your clients. Additionally, consider something like
UpdateExpert or HFNetCheckPro to automate your Windows patch management.

And if you're too busy to think straight, tell your company's ownership
that the saturation point for a desktop support tech is 50-75 users. At
that point, you have zero time for network improvement, planning or
strategic thinking.

have fun,
john

Just because they're the latest drivers doesn't mean they're going to
work. OTOH, we're running some HP all-in-ones (ugly machines all) with
no issues, and up until July I'd been running my Clié with no issues on

Here's an idea, has anyone considered Software Assurance? As I myself prefer
XP over the others, yet still dread the new coming Windows "Longhorn" (with
database driven file management now), I'd have to say, that if you're
installing new operating systems on at least 5 machines, buy Software
Assurance ... Install Windows 2000 (if you like) until you feel XP is
"ready" for you're network, then upgrade to that at no cost.

Then, with Software Assurance, you can also hit up the new Longhorn release
coming up in the not to distant future (when its stable enough of course).

OR just buy the XP licenses, yet just use Windows 2000 (License Rollback
Clause or whatever its called), then use XP when you feel that you're ready
... And daring ;)

That's pretty much what I do sans SA. To upgrade machines to Win2K I buy XP but install Win2K instead. I have our PC maker sell us XP but load Win2K for us on new boxes. Someday I might convert to XP but really need to finish getting off of Win98 first. Unless you pay for SA and corporate licensing the version of XP you get has the awful license registration cr@p that makes hardware changes impossible to deal with. My #1 reason for avoiding XP.

What! And then deal with Longhorn driver issues? Come on! :P

Seriously, I wonder how many people use SA for operating systems? We do
have SA for all of our server licenses and Office suites, but I don't
bother with SA for the desktop OS. In my view, the machine is going to
cycle out in five years, so why bother rolling out an OS upgrade on an
inadequate client? OTOH, we're still running our data collectors on
NT4, so ...
