Anyone interested in a 4GL Programming course for Vantage?

What is the address for the Mediawiki site?

I actually went to Perspectives this last time on the hope that the
Advanced Customization class would enable me to leverage the client-side
stuff more effectively. The class was a huge disappointment as the
instructor kept saying "I'm not a programmer" and kept punting all of
the real questions to Rich Riley and Brian Hattrup (you can thank Brian

Brian and Rich did a good job fielding questions, but their job isn't to

I think this community could probably do something like this, and Mark
Wonsil kick-started this with a Mediawiki-based web site, but seeding
such a site to make it useful would require some real initial commitment
to make it useful enough to be a real resource, and we all have day

I was assigned your call today in regards to 4GL/NET programming training
and I should be able to help you with that as I've done most of the advanced
technical classes for a couple of years.

Right off the top of my head, this is an agenda I believe would be
beneficial:

Day 1:

Progress basics (for each, find, if/else, repeat, locks, etc).

BPM 4GL/ABL basics (this would cover the basic things you will use BPM for,
like making fields mandatory, cross referencing data, populating data, etc).

BPM 4GL/ABL advanced topics (this would cover using the Forward to Procedure
functionality to call external progress programs, running programs
persistently to re-use existing functionality - similar to what Service
Connect does but in BPM).

Day 2:

Customization basics (what is a view, row rule, extended property, like
properties, etc).

Customization topics:

Invoking searches from other objects.

Invoking methods from other objects.

Epi Combo usage (how to populate it dynamically with data).

Embedding grids linked to UD tables (with CRUD capabilities).

Somewhere in day 1, most likely at the beginning we could do a brief
overview of the Epicor framework and how it interacts with the business
objects and database so people get a better understanding of how everything
fits together.

I'm very flexible as I've given almost all technical courses in the past and
currently do the Epicor SDK class so we can cover any other topics you would
want.

Price will be determined based on how many people sign up, for a course of
this type, smaller groups are better as people usually have many questions
which is understandable as the material is more complex. Location is not a
problem, I've given classes here in Minneapolis and in other countries.

Thanks!

I agree, usually you hear that 'I feel your pain, but it's not my
problem' from those not invested in the process. But that's not the
case here. I don't think anyone is asking for the equivalent of the
MSDN, but something more substantial would be better than the vacuum
that exists. Service connect documentation is another fine example.

This has been my biggest complaint about Epicor. They provide the tools
and the ability to create some pretty amazing customizations in house,
but provide no real documentation on how to do it. I also spoke with
Rich Riley at Perspectives and while he acknowledges the deficiency, he
also implied that this isn't on Epicor's hit list.

Virtually every other programming environment I've worked with, there
has always been adequate documentation of syntax and object model.

On the flip side, I can image that it is a momentous task to create and
manage this type of documentation.

It just stings a little when Epicor first pitched this capability during
the first sales encounter I had with them 3 years ago and I'm still
struggling to create customizations.

I'd be interested depending on cost, location, etc.

I found the Advanced Customization training at Perspectives to be
worthless. Epicor needs to provide a better cookbook of examples and
starting points for typical use cases. I mentioned this to Rich Riley
who manages the Tools group at Epicor (they're the architects of the
client framework and the guts of Epicor 9/Vantage). He agreed but it
seemed unlikely they'd actually do something like this.

Yup, I'd be interested as well if the cost was "reasonable" again as
someone else said.

I'd also be interested in a course in some advanced customizations, i.e.
forms tied to UD tables and also creating new tabs on existing screens
and pulling grid views from UD tables. I've created some of these but
none of them function fully the way I want.

I was assigned your call today in regards to 4GL/NET programming
training
and I should be able to help you with that as I've done most of the
advanced
technical classes for a couple of years.

Right off the top of my head, this is an agenda I believe would be
beneficial:

Day 1:

Progress basics (for each, find, if/else, repeat, locks, etc).

BPM 4GL/ABL basics (this would cover the basic things you will use BPM
for,
like making fields mandatory, cross referencing data, populating data,
etc).

BPM 4GL/ABL advanced topics (this would cover using the Forward to
Procedure
functionality to call external progress programs, running programs
persistently to re-use existing functionality - similar to what Service
Connect does but in BPM).

Day 2:

Customization basics (what is a view, row rule, extended property, like
properties, etc).

Customization topics:

Invoking searches from other objects.

Invoking methods from other objects.

Epi Combo usage (how to populate it dynamically with data).

Embedding grids linked to UD tables (with CRUD capabilities).

Somewhere in day 1, most likely at the beginning we could do a brief
overview of the Epicor framework and how it interacts with the business
objects and database so people get a better understanding of how
everything
fits together.

I'm very flexible as I've given almost all technical courses in the past
and
currently do the Epicor SDK class so we can cover any other topics you
would
want.

Price will be determined based on how many people sign up, for a course
of
this type, smaller groups are better as people usually have many
questions
which is understandable as the material is more complex. Location is not
a
problem, I've given classes here in Minneapolis and in other countries.

Thanks!

I hesitate because it is programming.....but not ruling it out.

Maybe if the costs were a little extreme I would demand this path. But
if they aren't, I'd rather be face-to-face since it is programming.

And Tim's reason is the one where I would say no as well.

Everyone will interrupt because I am in the building.

I personally don't like Webex training. If my body is in the building,
there is nothing important enough to leave me alone.

I prefer WebEx, because being on the Left Coast is a drag when all the training I need is in Chicago. I still haven't gotten my management to understand that the return is worth the investment of plane tickets and two nights in a hotel, and I promise to feed myself. If I need to be out of building, well, my kids are grown (pretty much), so I can attend from home... (I wish Starbucks wasn't so noisy..)

I haven't seen any mention this, but you can find a lot of great documentation on Progress 4GL at their own sites,

*nods*

I actually went to Perspectives this last time on the hope that the
Advanced Customization class would enable me to leverage the client-side
stuff more effectively. The class was a huge disappointment as the
instructor kept saying "I'm not a programmer" and kept punting all of
the real questions to Rich Riley and Brian Hattrup (you can thank Brian
for the whole Dashboard framework, among other things). I'm thinking
"why the heck did they send someone who doesn't understand coding to
teach a coding class!?!".

Brian and Rich did a good job fielding questions, but their job isn't to
provide documentation, its to deliver code, and I don't think Epicor
sees this as something that's high on the priority list.

I think this community could probably do something like this, and Mark
Wonsil kick-started this with a Mediawiki-based web site, but seeding
such a site to make it useful would require some real initial commitment
to make it useful enough to be a real resource, and we all have day
jobs. :-)

[snip]

It just stings a little when Epicor first pitched this capability during
the first sales encounter I had with them 3 years ago and I'm still
struggling to create customizations.

I'd like to attend as well. As everyone else has said, it depends on cost and location. Great idea though.

Yes, I think we all agree that "in-person" is much better and preferred. But as a fellow Left-Coaster - and as LeAnn says - it's almost impossible to get the funding and/or make the case for the ROI. But I think I could sell a WebEx training!

Epicor might consider offering this at Perspectives - I wonder if it would help attendance?

Chicago isn't too far from me. It's been a while since I had a cold beer at

I use these regularly:

ABL/4GL Reference - http://www.progress.com/progress/products/documentation/docs/dvref/dvref.pdf
ABL/4GL Handbook - http://www.progress.com/progress/products/documentation/docs/dvhbk/dvhbk.pdf

However, knowing how to use the language and knowing how 4GL/ABL is implemented and usable in the server-side context of Vantage/Epicor9 are two rather different things.

Again, at minimum a cookbook of basic techniques would be nice.

I haven't seen any mention this, but you can find a lot of great documentation on Progress 4GL at their own sites,
http://communities.progress.com/pcom/docs
If there are enough people from the "left", it may be possible to setup
two classes.

Yes, I think we all agree that "in-person" is much better and preferred.
But as a fellow Left-Coaster - and as LeAnn says - it's almost
impossible to get the funding and/or make the case for the ROI. But I
think I could sell a WebEx training!

Epicor might consider offering this at Perspectives - I wonder if it
would help attendance?

two nights in a hotel, and I promise to feed myself. If I need to be out
of building, well, my kids are grown (pretty much), so I can attend from
home... (I wish Starbucks wasn't so noisy..)
