Epicor Customer Support

To be fair, this sounds like every major system I have ever installed. Perhaps it is something genetic that makes a salesperson a salesperson, and predisposes them to overpromise and underdeliver. In my experience, Epicor is far from unique in this regard.

Here's another:
Began in January, the question was "why does the automatic job close
function require a cost estimate on an operation that is marked as
QUANTITY
ONLY??"
The correspondence demonstrates that the support people could not even
determine what the question was, let alone answer it!
I've been on Vantage since 1999. In those days it was a quick pick up
the
phone, first name basis with the support techs, and an answer
immediately or
surely by the end of the day. Since the release of 8.0 that support
level
has dwindled to useless. And if the question starts with "How do I . . .
"
Oh my goodness, you need our consulting people and by the way that is
billable!

Stan,
I received some more information on your questions.

The reason why the auto job close does not work when an operation has 0
estimated cost is because the calculation that is used in the auto job
close
function to determine if the job can be closed uses the estimated hours.
The
calculation ends up being a value divided by 0 (the estimate of 0).

I will put an enhancement in to change the way this works.

Thanks,
Amy

Hi Amy:

I understand that. I knew that from testing the function and how it
works.
My questions remain:

A) If it is possible to have operations without cost estimates or
materials/subcontract without cost estimates, why are they required for
this
function to work?

And

B) Is it possible to revise the logic so that these estimates are not
required?

Thanks

Stan, I tested this in 6.10.543 and it worked the same in that version,
as
it did for me in 8.03.404a. I have attached some screen shots from my
test
in version 6. Operation 10 was marked as backflush with an estimate of 1
piece per hour. Operation 20 was quantity only with an estimate of 1
piece
per hour. When I did a rollup in cost set entry it brought in the labor
rate
from only the quantity only work center (op 20), and it took the labor
and
burden rate from both work centers. If you are seeing something
different in
version 6, please send me some screen shots showing this.

Stan, I have tested this a few times, and when I had the standards setup
on
the final operation my standard costs were not artificially inflated. I
checked them after I did the auto complete, and again after it was auto
closed and the costs stayed the same. Test this on a backup system at
your
end and if you get something different can you sent me some screen shots
show the inflation of the standard costs from those estimates.

Summary:

Hierarchy

I understand the hierarchy for this process to be Final Operation
Complete;
Final operation labor/cost estimate; and lastly the parameters set in
the
Auto Job Complete/Close Code. Is that correct?

Also, I tested this with the final operation marked as Quantity Only as
opposed to Time/Quantity. The Job Complete Exception report shows that
the
process is still looking for a cost estimate for the final operation.
Since
the final op is for quantity only, no time (estimate or actual) is
applied
to that op; therefore no cost estimate. It seems the process is creating
an
exception preventing job completion or closing for a requirement that
does
not exist. Shouldn't the process ignore the need for cost estimate when
the
op is marked as quantity only?

Although given the silent monitoring of this group that is done by
Epicor (and for every possible other place people comment on Epicor) you
should not be at all surprised if you receive a call from someone who
works for Joe. They are far more proactive about public criticism than
solving issues - or so it seems.

Actually my experience has been fairly good with support although it has
sometimes taken a few calls or emails to get to "the right person" (or
someone who speaks English). This may change as we move away from the
relatively stable 6.1 version. They put a lot of effort into addressing
issues in 8.03.4xx "from the ground up" so prior 8.x versions will
probably get, as indicated in another post, the "fixed in 8.03.4xx"
response.

I also have issues with my CAM returning my calls and email. Our previous
CAM was wonderful at getting back to me almost instantaneously, whereas,
with our current CAM I have to wait for days. I also have an issue with
customer programming. I have had a request sitting in queue for over a month
for a minor fix to a program which is already written and they cannot even
give me a quote on how much it will cost for this minor fix. Apparently they
do not want our money.

Complete;

Here is a prime examle of a support request for a simple document.
It took almost 3 months to get it. When a user has an issue that I
cannot answer I let them know I will be putting a support call in.
A gods honest response Is them lauging at me saying maybe you can
get someone who you can understand this time. Then they come to a
realization that they will not get a good answer if one at all.
Epicor makes for the butt of alot of jokes around here. Maybe we
were just spoiled by our previous Vendor who would solve about
anything in a few minutes, including large issues in under 45
minutes.

I would put in a good word for the Support. I certainly have my

In particular, if I feel like the assigned support person doesn't

On two different occasions over the last two and a half years, I have
had someone sit on the phone with me and go over every single open

prioritize, and giving me updates on all the calls. That seemed to

I concur with Peter. I have only had a few issues with Vantage over the
years and if the system is down, they get on the line immediately. I
would give them an A+ from my point of view.

share of nightmares that are either still open or took a year to get
fixed. But for the most part, I find them responsive and helpful.
In particular, if I feel like the assigned support person doesn't
seem to understand the problem, or the urgency of the problem, I have
contacted Rhonda and she has stepped right in, assigned a new person,
and we've gotten it resolved. I have also found that it is more
productive to enter a new call through Epic Web rather than calling
in. That way, the call seems to get routed immediately to the right
person and that person calls me back within hours normally.

On two different occasions over the last two and a half years, I have
had someone sit on the phone with me and go over every single open
call I had, allowing me to prioritize the ones I needed to
prioritize, and giving me updates on all the calls. That seemed to
really help. And it shows a high level of support to me.

Let me also vote for the EpicWeb path. It was mentioned at the SE Michigan
User's Group meeting and I tried it. It is a great way to document a call. For
every "event" (email, call, testing) I submit a copy of that event. I also
like that I can attach documents to the call. I'm hoping that if they can look
at a screen-shot, see records downloaded into Excel, etc. that it will help
move the issue to a quicker resolution. I can also add new information that I
may have discovered for forgot to mention in any previous communications. I
even paste in copies of emails to document everything about the call.

I think it also helps the CAM who can actually see the entire conversion.

You are right. The native PO Entry UI forms don't have these controls.

However, if you examine the PO data tables, they contain fields which very much mirror fields in the sales order tables (that do support these features).

Unfortunately, they aren't being updated by the current adapters and controls.

Sorry that is on sales order entry.

I did not have such an option. Are you sure it was not a customization on

There is a check box in ver. 8.03 on the line to lock unit Price that I
think does what you are doing in your custom code.

Thanks a ton Rob! That did the trick as far as the values changing is
concerned. One issue down, 3 more to go :)

We experienced the (unacceptable) auto price change upon any editing as
well.

I ended up adding a checkbox (PODetail.checkbox0 3) to the line tab w/ this
code to capture current line price and store as 'frozen' price (for restore
after the app stupidly recalcs it) in PODetail.Number02:

'//////
Private Sub PODetail_AfterField Change(ByVal sender As object, ByVal args As
DataColumnChangeEve ntArgs) Handles PODetail_Column. ColumnChanged
Event Handler Code
'
Select Case args.Column. ColumnName

Case "CheckBox03"
If edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("CheckBox03 ") = True Then
'messagebox. show("freeze unit price value = unit cost on checkbox true
select")
edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("Number02" ) = edvPODetail.
dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("UnitCost" )
End If

Case Else
End Select
End Sub
'/////

I added a hidden textbox (txtEpiClcTtlCst) linked to PODetail.CalcTotalC ost
and then added this code to restore the price upon unwarranted app triggered
changes:

'////
Private Sub txtEpiClcTtlCst_ ValueChanged( ByVal Sender As Object, ByVal
Args As System.EventArgs) Handles txtEpiClcTtlCst. ValueChanged
'// ** Place Event Handling Code Here **
If len(txtEpiClcTtlCst .text) <> 0 then
If edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("CheckBox03 ") = True Then
If edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("UnitCost" ) <> edvPODetail.
dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("Number02" ) Then
'messagebox. show("reset price to Freeze Unit Price value")
edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("UnitCost" ) = edvPODetail.
dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("Number02" )
End If
End If
End If
End Sub
'////

The darn shame of it is, the db looks like it was designed to enable
rollback of cost as their are numerous pre-change qty, pre-change cost,
etc., fields that look they were intended to store values prior to changes
made. Unfortunately, most don't get updated so I had to write the mess
above. Had they been working (404), it would have been much cleaner.

The ability of a buyer to set a checkbox to Lock a unit cost (instead of
allowing a re-price based on the current price list - every time a qty or
date changes) should be a standard option PO Entry option.

I have been running into a number of problems while customizing the Purchase
Order Entry form.

For starters, the unit price for any particular line items resets to the
default value when ANY change is made to the form forcing the user to double
check every time. I have been trying to use beforeadapter, afteradapter,
afterfieldchange, and other variations/combinat ions to little success.
Essentially, we would like the unit price to not change automatically, it
should remain the same value throughout no matter what change is made
anywhere else. (BPMs failed to do anything useful to help with this)

We would like releases for any new line item to have a locked quantity.
While this is relatively simple to do with a afterfieldchange method, but
this tends to interfere with the above problem or vice-versa. The two do not
seem to co-exist very well.

For line items that fall into the "other" category, we would like to pick a
single GL account on the release form for all future line items. I added a
new search button and textboxes for the user to pick a GL account, but I
cannot seem to find an easy way to (a) make all "other" line items use that
GL account and/or (b) have all new line items use that GL account. Also, as
with the unit cost problem above, when ANY change is made to the line item,
the GL on the release form tends to reset to the same "misc" value.

Any suggestions and comments would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kunal

I have to agree here with Andrew. I would say over the past 4 to 6
months, support has improvement tremendously; both in there response
time and follow-ups. Most of my biggest complaint about there support
no longer exist. I have to give them 2 thumbs up also for listening to
their users regarding support issues.

Honestly, I have to say that I have seen a vast improvement of their
support staff and follow-ups. I think their support improves as you
become current on your Vantage edition. When we were 8.00, we were told
on every call that it was fixed in 8.03. Some of it was, but now that
we are on 8.03, they actually work to resolve our issues.

Good Morning Everyone,

I have a meeting with Epicor on Monday. One of the topics that is bound
to come up is the level of support/response we receive when we call
technical support and other people they have on staff.

Does want to share their feels about Epicor? Do they respond when you
call? Are they helpful? If you call your CAM does he respond quickly?

Thanks !

Dale

I did not have such an option. Are you sure it was not a customization

There is a check box in ver. 8.03 on the line to lock unit Price that I
think does what you are doing in your custom code.

Thanks a ton Rob! That did the trick as far as the values changing is
concerned. One issue down, 3 more to go :)

We experienced the (unacceptable) auto price change upon any editing as
well.

I ended up adding a checkbox (PODetail.checkbox0 3) to the line tab w/
this
code to capture current line price and store as 'frozen' price (for
restore
after the app stupidly recalcs it) in PODetail.Number02:

'//////
Private Sub PODetail_AfterField Change(ByVal sender As object, ByVal
args As
DataColumnChangeEve ntArgs) Handles PODetail_Column. ColumnChanged
Event Handler Code
'
Select Case args.Column. ColumnName

Case "CheckBox03"
If edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("CheckBox03 ") = True Then
'messagebox. show("freeze unit price value = unit cost on checkbox true
select")
edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("Number02" ) = edvPODetail.
dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("UnitCost" )
End If

Case Else
End Select
End Sub
'/////

I added a hidden textbox (txtEpiClcTtlCst) linked to PODetail.CalcTotalC
ost
and then added this code to restore the price upon unwarranted app
triggered
changes:

'////
Private Sub txtEpiClcTtlCst_ ValueChanged( ByVal Sender As Object, ByVal
Args As System.EventArgs) Handles txtEpiClcTtlCst. ValueChanged
'// ** Place Event Handling Code Here **
If len(txtEpiClcTtlCst .text) <> 0 then
If edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("CheckBox03 ") = True Then
If edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("UnitCost" ) <> edvPODetail.
dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("Number02" ) Then
'messagebox. show("reset price to Freeze Unit Price value")
edvPODetail. dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("UnitCost" ) = edvPODetail.
dataView( edvPODetail. Row)("Number02" )
End If
End If
End If
End Sub
'////

The darn shame of it is, the db looks like it was designed to enable
rollback of cost as their are numerous pre-change qty, pre-change cost,
etc., fields that look they were intended to store values prior to
changes
made. Unfortunately, most don't get updated so I had to write the mess
above. Had they been working (404), it would have been much cleaner.

The ability of a buyer to set a checkbox to Lock a unit cost (instead of
allowing a re-price based on the current price list - every time a qty
or
date changes) should be a standard option PO Entry option.

I have been running into a number of problems while customizing the
Purchase
Order Entry form.

For starters, the unit price for any particular line items resets to the
default value when ANY change is made to the form forcing the user to
double
check every time. I have been trying to use beforeadapter, afteradapter,
afterfieldchange, and other variations/combinat ions to little success.
Essentially, we would like the unit price to not change automatically,
it
should remain the same value throughout no matter what change is made
anywhere else. (BPMs failed to do anything useful to help with this)

We would like releases for any new line item to have a locked quantity.
While this is relatively simple to do with a afterfieldchange method,
but
this tends to interfere with the above problem or vice-versa. The two do
not
seem to co-exist very well.

pick a
single GL account on the release form for all future line items. I added

cannot seem to find an easy way to (a) make all "other" line items use
that

as
with the unit cost problem above, when ANY change is made to the line
item,
the GL on the release form tends to reset to the same "misc" value.

Any suggestions and comments would be highly appreciated.

I would agree that support has gotten better, but only for easy
questions. Once you convince support that there actually is a bug in
vantage, they give it an SCR number and you never hear about it again,
and rarely does it get fixed. We have about 15 SCR numbers out there,
some from 6-8 months old and never touched. When i talk to support
about them, they can't tell me anything because it is in development's
hands. I always cringe when i get an SCR because i know it is a lost
cause after that.
Chad Juenke deffinately oversold Vantage's capabilities. We went
through an extensive selection process with Vantage and asked very
specific quiestions about what Vantage could do. Once we purchased
the product, we found that many things we can quote Chad Juenke saying
are blatantly not true.

can you share what the problem was?

I've been involved with Vantage from the early 90's and way back when our
salesman oversold Vantage. Many of them were very blatant lies (ODBC was a
big one for us; it didn't even work at all). I've come in contact with so
many companies where Vantage really shouldn't have even been considered, but
I always have heard the same thing. "Our salesman said that it would do
that". Whenever the main goal of a company is to get a sale, this is what
you see.

Regarding support, I can say that back in the day, you were on a first name
basis with the folks in support and they responded to issues as quickly as
possible. You knew who to ask for and who could help you best with what
modules. I don't think that support is currently that good at all . I've
only had one instance where I got a decent response in the last few years
and I had to get my CAM involved to get that far.

The last one is custom programming. From the comments that I'm seeing today
about them these yahoos haven't changed a bit. I remember asking for a
quote and it took them 6 months to quote it, another 4 to deliver something
that didn't even remotely do what it was supposed to and after waiting
another 6 months for them to fix it, I just gave up. I never did hear back
from them ever.

I've never been able to understand why the higher ups at Epicor continue to
allow certain things to go on. Instead of taking a decent product and
maximizing the ability of their user base to market it (you know, by keeping
them happy) they continue with the same vicious cycle of with all of the new
customers.

I've tried to refrain from posting anything, but after reading some of the
other comments, I felt like I needed to vent also.

Chad Juenke deffinately oversold Vantage's capabilities. We went
through an extensive selection process with Vantage and asked very
specific quiestions about what Vantage could do. Once we purchased
the product, we found that many things we can quote Chad Juenke saying
are blatantly not true.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I think support or the lack of depends upon the module in Vantage that has
the problem. I recently had a problem with AP Invoice Entry in 8.03.403d
that was recognized and fixed within a few days. I have to admit I was
pleasantly surprised since I normally have to wait that long just to get a
response. I have issues in MRP, BOM, and etc. that I submitted, I received
the first response from support, I responded to that and now it has been
months and no further action has been taken. I have even gone on the web
and asked if this problem is being worked on and still no response. I still
have an issue that was opened in 2006 and has not been responded to past the
first response yet.

The one thing that I absolutely abhor is when I reply to an email from
support and never receive an acknowledgement back from them. I had one such
incident that I went back to on EpicWeb and asked if it was being worked on.
I received a phone call from someone else and I lodged my complaint about
the lack of a response. She assured me she would have the support person
contact me. That was over three months ago and I still have not received a
response. I have given up on support at Vantage when it comes to MRP, the
Configurator, scheduling, etc. Every version or patch seems to fix one
thing and break others. Support either does not have a clue what is going
on or they just don't care. I keep submitting the problems knowing full
well that I cannot expect any substantial response much less get anything
fixed. Still, I think it is my duty to submit the issues.

Again, it depends on what support group you are dealing with and even then
it will depend on the person that gets assigned to the call. I cringe when
I submit something on EpicWeb and it gets assigned to one specific person
because I know I simply wasted my time. That is probably because I
submitted a horrible review of his level of support. I imagine it got back
to him and instead of the review making him do a better job he now refuses
to provide me with support beyond the first response at all. I would have
hoped that the reviews we submit were confidential but I am not so sure.

Support it still a crap-shoot for me, but I keep trying.

Thanks !

I did not have such an option. Are you sure it was not a customization

There is a check box in ver. 8.03 on the line to lock unit Price that I
think does what you are doing in your custom code.

For line items that fall into the "other" category, we would like to
pick a
single GL account on the release form for all future line items. I added
a
new search button and textboxes for the user to pick a GL account, but I
cannot seem to find an easy way to (a) make all "other" line items use
that
GL account and/or (b) have all new line items use that GL account. Also,
as
with the unit cost problem above, when ANY change is made to the line
item,
the GL on the release form tends to reset to the same "misc" value.

Any suggestions and comments would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kunal

We upgraded to 404 on a different server and I was verifying the
customizations in customization maintenance before going live and saw a
warning message that said 'Parent in not valid' which does not make much
sense. I logged the call online in the new "chat" environment, but the
person I talked to could not help me and someone else was supposed to
call me back. I guess the call fell through the cracks somehow, but I
received a call from a very helpful lady at Epicor this afternoon and
she just emailed me a couple of answerbooks that I will have a look as
soon as I send this message. Thank you Judy.

I had this. If you had a customization on a tab that doesn't exist anymore, or
if you delete a groupbox with an item on it, you'll get that message. What
it's saying is there's a parent object that the object in question is
contained by and that container is no longer there. Did you customize any of
the Shipping tabs?

I think support or the lack of depends upon the module in Vantage that
has
the problem. I recently had a problem with AP Invoice Entry in 8.03.403d
that was recognized and fixed within a few days. I have to admit I was
pleasantly surprised since I normally have to wait that long just to get
a
response. I have issues in MRP, BOM, and etc. that I submitted, I
received
the first response from support, I responded to that and now it has been
months and no further action has been taken. I have even gone on the web
and asked if this problem is being worked on and still no response. I
still
have an issue that was opened in 2006 and has not been responded to past
the
first response yet.

The one thing that I absolutely abhor is when I reply to an email from
support and never receive an acknowledgement back from them. I had one
such
incident that I went back to on EpicWeb and asked if it was being worked
on.
I received a phone call from someone else and I lodged my complaint
about
the lack of a response. She assured me she would have the support person
contact me. That was over three months ago and I still have not received
a
response. I have given up on support at Vantage when it comes to MRP,
the
Configurator, scheduling, etc. Every version or patch seems to fix one
thing and break others. Support either does not have a clue what is
going
on or they just don't care. I keep submitting the problems knowing full
well that I cannot expect any substantial response much less get
anything
fixed. Still, I think it is my duty to submit the issues.

Again, it depends on what support group you are dealing with and even
then
it will depend on the person that gets assigned to the call. I cringe
when
I submit something on EpicWeb and it gets assigned to one specific
person
because I know I simply wasted my time. That is probably because I
submitted a horrible review of his level of support. I imagine it got
back
to him and instead of the review making him do a better job he now
refuses
to provide me with support beyond the first response at all. I would
have
hoped that the reviews we submit were confidential but I am not so sure.

Support it still a crap-shoot for me, but I keep trying.

Are you sure it was not a customization
on your end?

Thanks,
Kunal
