We have three. It used to be two, but I prefer Prod, Pilot and Test.
Prod is backed up to Pilot every month at minimum unless there is a project being worked in there that takes longer (typically pricing). I try not to have it take too long because we have to double-source Prod and Pilot during that time if it is a new item(s) that need to be priced in the file.

I prefer to have Test now since there are a few more people with DMT access, gives a true sandbox environment to work with. Typically, I overwrite Prod to Test at the same time Pilot is overwritten so that the Test environment is as up-to-date as possible to do things in.

5 non-prod environments:

  • Test (users) (target is monthly, no longer than quarterly if users need grace to finish something)
  • Dev (IT only) (refreshed monthly or on demand)
  • Training
  • Project1 & Project2 (special-use, restricted to IT & requested users). Refreshed as needed for each initiative, or when getting ready for the next one
