[OT] Web Usage Logging

Has anyone experienced a situation where you have a pending general journal that has entries logged into it that you can not print preview or send to a printer for a preliminary review prior to posting to the general ledger?

Re-booting the server has helped out and fixes the problem, but the problem comes riight back like a recurring dream. This does not seem to lend itself to a productive way of doing business. Tech support has tried to troubleshoot this, but there has been no corrective action put into place after over a week of deliberation and departmental finger pointing.

Any comments or similar experiences?

Thanks

Your absolutely right, the decision did not find internet use to be
completely informational and innocuous. It did find, however, that internet
use, in and of itself, is insufficient grounds for termination. Also the
courts have found that "at will" employment leaves plenty of grounds for
unlawful termination.

That depends on what the employee is browsing. The article notes that the
employee was using it for News and Travel, both can be considered comparable
to 'a daily newspaper'. It also points out that the activity "does not
interfere with their overall work performance". It also refers to an
employee in a city government position. Private companies certainly do have
the right to block potentially 'offensive' material such as pornography.
Child Pornography is a violation of federal law.
You can't tell me you are going to get away with that. Browsing 'less
respectable' web sites such as gaming and gambling sites can result in a
malware infection of the users PC or the corporate network. For that reason
it is acceptable to restrict access to certain types of sites that may cause
harm to the corporate computing environment. We also consider ourselves an
"at will employer", short way of saying we can fire you whenever we want.

Pretty broad brush stroke to say 'courts have found it to be informational
and innocuous.

Recent legal precedence would indicate that there may be a problem with
attempting to restrict internet access.

Although management may have a deleterious opinion of web use, the courts
have found it to be informational and innocuous.

Let the lawsuits begin.

We use Websense at our company. Our owner has only two rules, no porn and
no job searching on his dime. So we filter everyone on those categories.
Some of our Managers have asked me to put time restrictions on certain
employees who they feel are spending too much time goofing off on the net.
We also provide automated weekly reports to our HR that gives them summaries
of time on the internet. Seems to work well.

I just needed to dump my 2 cents into this.

Check your individual state laws FIRST.

Monitoring employees web usage without their knowledge may be against the
law.

Does your state require a signed statement telling the employee they are
being monitored?
Does your state require a daily notice (perhaps their homepage) of the
monitoring?

Monitoring software is useful, but its presence can also turn ugly, very
quickly, for management if they don't pay attention to disclosures required
by the law.

Think of this a computer version of a sexual harassment law suit, waiting to
happen.
People can get very an_l about their privacy.

This software is not like installing Vantage, Office or CAD There are other
things to think about besides the license agreement.

I'm not saying don't do it.
Just do it right.

Regards,

Rich

One thing I've found is that having different Brands/Types of Printers
served off of the same machine creates problems. (ESPECIALLY with Zebra
printers) I've had to serve each flavor (3) off of a different server for
the print spooler not to crash. Check on the recovery settings of your
print spooler in SERVICES. Set them to immediately recover, (unfortunately
the smallest interval is 1 minute).

Hi,

My understanding was that surfcontrol could do this , if not a bit long
winded in setting up.

Surfcontrol does do this, and that is how we have it setup today,
but it is rather quirky (does not work all of the time), and I am
frustrated with the high maintenance costs. I did not realize when
we purchased it that our recurring costs would be around 75% of the
original purchase price every year (for maintenance & URL updates).

The complete IE history is not wiped clean when a user clicks "Clear
History". In fact, a good majority of the history is still held in an
encrypted/locked file called index.dat. I have a VB program which
interprets this file and prints it out.

Also, I have a piece of sample code that would become the owner
application of all instances of IE on a computer, thus enabling not only
logging, but complete interpretation of entire html sessions that users
are in. This sample application "hooks" into windows itself and claims
ownership of each new instance of IE. The beauty behind this app is
that we had intended to develop it into a utility that would block page
access by detected content. Since the app had control of IE, it could
also close it.

Im sure I have access to other file/system utilities in windows that can
help log things like that. Some coding sites have alot of source-code
for DIY'ers if your up to the task of developing your own stuff,
www.planet-source-code.com is an excellent starting point. Otherwise,
there are $nooping apps out there (as Rebecca suggested) that will
handle what your talking about as well.

I have been asked to find a way to log web usage. Not necessarily to
block or control....just log web sites visited and if possible the
amount of time connected. I've used our SonicWall before but it does
not record as much detail as desired....just the total MB transferred by
user. We are trying to pin down some late night high volume usage
possibly related to game playing (MUDs, etc...) by people supposedly
working. Especially by users savvy enough to wipe IE history, temp
files and cookies. Any suggestions?

Does this specific product work ok with Citrix? Are there a lot of
