Why have you not upgraded

SOX compliance Testing - We have to make sure before we upgrade we are
on a stable patch/release as all of the verification Testing that must
be completed during the upgrade process.

We upgrade, but have to be very choosy about what level we upgrade to as
it is limited to maybe once or twice a year because of all the testing
work that is required.

Hello group,
I am looking for a simple respectful survey of reasons companies have
not upgraded to the latest Patch or Version of Vantage.
Please keep your replies brief (5 words or less) and please keep the
reasons to your Top One or Two reasons.
If you have been holding back from the latest version, this is a chance
to express the reason.
To be sure it comes to an end, please end this thread by close of
business Monday 8/23/09.
Thank you,
Aaron Hoyt

Current on 8.03.405. Starting the testing process for .408B. Testing is time-consuming and getting a test environment working has taken non-trivial effort as well (although I think I'm out of the weeds on this now). The 408 releases do offer fixes for stuff that we want, so there's real value there.

Realistically I can't imagine doing more than one patch cycle in a given year.

Aaron,

We have not updated from 407C because of the concerns about the Product Configurator. It is central to our Quote and Order process.

Last November we did upgrade from Vantage 6.1 to Vantage 8.03.407. Things are working pretty much the same but I can tell you that Vantage 8.03 is about 10 times slower than 6.1. We bought a new 64-bit server with ample resources and even upgraded our network to Gigabit. We've replace most of our desktops with new PCs. It's still WAY slower than 6.1. The interface is quite buggy too. During our implementation and training the Epicor consultants constantly said, "Save and save often!" They meant it.

What's keeping us from upgrading to Epicor 9? Well we've only been on 8.03 for a short time and I've heard Epicor 9 is even slower than this version. If that's true (we haven't even tested it yet) we may never upgrade. If I throw more pain on our users they might decide to crucify me.

Boy I keep hearing about these performance issues, but on 8.03.405 both via Citrix and client-side deployment I think Vantage client performance is just fine. I think Citrix-based performance is fastest overall, since most of the DLLs get cached once they've been loaded the first time. I always want report print previewing to be faster, but I never get complaints about performance.

Fear. We try to stay as up to date as possible, but every patch has bugs
that only show up in certain business processes, and we seem to be
"special". Just found another in 407a... (multiple credit requests on
the same RMA- first one works, all subsequent give a tax error. It
doesn't stop processing, but makes life miserable trying to get around
it. We do stock rotation, so this is not unusual for us. It's confirmed
to still exit in 408b...)

The fact that each service pack seems to create new issues vs. just resolving old ones indicates a serious deficiency in Epicor's regression testing process, which seems nonexistent or seriously deficient, and certainly they don't do a lot of unit testing. Maybe the codebase isn't even structured in a way to support the latter.

For those who deal with other ERP systems, is this kind of issue common?

Do we have a sense whether these are new issues created based on requested enhancements/changes to modules, or are these second or third-order effects created by changes elsewhere? I've managed software engineering teams, and this kind of patch-induced breakage would be unforgiveable in a lot of other contexts.

How do we as customers get visbility and insight with Epicor as to what's going on here? I'd rather be constructively engaged in this process since I'm paying tens of thousands of dollars per year for the fruits of this service pack development activity, versus just complaining.

We are upgrading to Vantage 8.03.408B due to the change to the Credit Card processing. We are not upgrading to Epicor 9 at this time because we have been on Vantage 8 for just over a year and still trying to get that all of that working.

Hi - We did a similar upgrade, with similar experiences with lack of performance, and scary bugs - and so won't be going to 9 or newer patches any time soon, if ever.

I'm an engineering 'user' rather than a pure system administrator - so I know first hand about the buggy-ness and just plain scary stuff. We hardly ever logged support calls when we were on 6.1 - but now we have many unresolved calls. Little by little the system does get better - but then something new breaks.

Some of our users are in more pain than others. Our quote guys have had the worst experiences.

If our staff were to vote, we'd be back on 6.1 in a heart beat. Ok, maybe in a few heart palpitations. We'd certainly miss some new features, but most would sacrifice them for a more robust system that does what it should.

So a succinct summary, without being disrespectful: In our experience, upgrades over promise and under deliver. We don't want to risk more pain and frustration, at a time our business can least afford it.
