11 x 17 printers

We are using several HP 5si printers. They are fairly dated and can
be
picked up online for around $200. There is an 8000 model that is
newer, and HP has models that are even newer than that. These are
solid network workhorse printers.

As far as your PDF problem, you do not need a special printer. Most
likely the problem is that there is not enough memory in the printer
that is producing partial pages. However, this is assuming you are
usinga laser, which you may not be since you said it has a scanner
built-in. In that case, you could try turning off "Advanced Print
Features" in the driver.

When printing, you need to make sure the page properties in the app
(such as Excel) is set up to use 11x17, AND you select the 11x17
sized
page in the print driver at the time you go to print.

Excel is a good place to start when troubleshooting your 11x17 print
issues. It won't produce documents that require a ton of memory.
Just
remember to set the page size to 11x17 in TWO locations.

printer be compatible with PDF files. I didn't know previously that PDF
files required anything special, but we have found that the
copier/scanner/printer combo we have apparently is not compatible with PDF
files. As a result, what is being printed either prints too large for the
page, only prints a partial on the page, and on and on. Vantage documents
will also be printed on this printer on regular size paper.

Does anyone have recommendations of printers that have had success with
printing 11 x 17, 81/2 x 11, vantage and pdf files?

We use the HP5000 as well. We also added our new Panasonic photocopier
to the network as an added printer resource

Hewlett Packard Laserjet 5100 ....our CAD department loves it, very fast
printout and has the post script drivers.

The new Sharp 400 series coper/scanner/printer does a good job as well, but
at $10,000 you could buy three possibly four HP Laserjet 5100 printers.

We have a Minolta 9100 that prints out our 11x17 prints. Its only about $900 from tigerdirect.

We also have a HP5100, it prints very fast and almost never have to
deal with it, unless it is out of toner.

We are also getting two Canon Copiers that will print 11x17 also.

You may want to check out an ink jet solution as well. Try the HP
2800dtn. It's network ready, prints up to 13 x 19 and is full color.
The best part is that it's about $500...

We use 2 Lexmark W812 printers, they are working great for us. You might
also think about a Kyocera fs9000

The cost per page is great! When we had ours we only replace the toner
one time each year.

I would suggest looking at a copier/printer. There are many out
there to choose from. Cost per copy is much less than a printer.
Obviously it is best if your people need to do copying as well.

Seeing the discussion on this I was thinking exactly the same thing about copier/printers. While basic printers are cheaper to purchase the cost per page is usually higher with a cartridge based toner than in a copier with just a toner bottle. Another huge advantage to the copier/printers with the 11" wide paper path is that most are now also a scanner. If you have ever priced an 11X17" scanner it is a real eye opener compared to the smaller 8.5" wide scan beds. We have several Ricoh Aficio based copier/printer/scanner/fax machines and scanning has been essential. Often we have a print from a customer but no CAD file so markups are by pencil and need to be scanned to send to the customer for review. We lease two of them with maintenance and supplies included and the cost per page is well under 2 cents compared to 3-4 cents for plain 8.5X11" pages on the HP printers.
