Troy -- the method you suggested appears to be running great! Thanks
so much. Can I use the same method on the 5.1 schema change and then
switch back to multiuser?

We are trying to convert from 4.0 to 5.1. We did get our test dbs up
and were ready to do the actual convert. Now I cannot get v5.0
Progress Explorer to work. Localhost appears but when I connect
nothing is listed under databases. I've tried reinstalling a clean
copy on a different server but have the same problem. Can't run the
schema changes until I get past this. Can you help? THANKS!!

Bill,

Is "AdminService for Progress 9.1A" running? If not, start it manually from "Services" then try to connect.
We are in the same boat. I just upgraded to 5.0, now it's time to upgrade to 5.1. This might take another week. Doing it on HP
LH-Pro 200MHZ server with 384MB RAM, RAID 5, 2.6GIG Database with 5 volumes. It took 24 hours to do the schema changes. Fortunately
the new server is more robust so it might take an hour or two to do the same.
You might download Todd Caughey's "Vantage 4.0 to 5.20 Experience" message from Vantage Yahoo Groups. It helped me a lot. Thank you
Todd!

Mike & Bill,
You can run Schema Changes without have the Progress Explorer tool running. It actually runs much faster this way. It's called single-user mode. You accomplish this very simply.

1. Make a copy the Schema Change icon in your Vantage directory (on the server).
2. Edit the Copy of the Schema Change icon replacing the ConnectionOptions = setting from "-N TCP -H hostname -S servicename -ld vantageDBname" to "-1". The -1 tells progress to run in single-user mode.
3. Now (with Progress Explorer OFF) run your Schema Change icon right from your server. It will shave some significant time off the whole process.

My "Single-User Schema Change.vtg" file looks like this:
[Vantage Startup]
Executable=V:\PROGRESS\bin\prowin32.exe
Database=V:\vantage
IniFile=V:\Vantage\vantage.ini
ParameterFile=V:\Vantage\db\Vantage.pf
ConnectOptions=-1
TempDirectory=C:\Epic51
StartupProcedure=applydf.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -rx -basekey ini

Thanks Troy.
I am sure I'll use the technique you describe below. Right now I am doing the test upgrade, but for real upgrade time will be of
great essence.
